‘En toch is alles wat we doen natuur’ bevat de mooiste natuurgedichten van dichter-tekenaar-bioloog Leo Vroman.
Vroman was gefascineerd door het leven in en rondom ons, dat hij tot in de wonderbaarlijkste details observeerde en beschreef.
Tientallen bundels speelse poëzie schreef hij, een onuitputtelijke stroom gedichten van 1946 tot 2014, het jaar van zijn overlijden.
Mirjam van Hengel (auteur van het succesvolle Hoe mooi alles, over Leo en Tineke Vroman) maakte een nieuwe, ruime selectie uit de gedichten die Vroman schreef over de natuur – die van mensen, die van gras, bloemen en bomen, van orkanen en organen en van alle mogelijke dieren.
Leo Vroman (1915-2014) was dichter, prozaïst, essayist, illustrator en hematoloog. Hij studeerde biologie in Utrecht en vluchtte in 1940 naar Nederlands-Indië. In 1945 werd hij uit Japanse gevangenschap bevrijd en vestigde zich in Verenigde Staten, samen met zijn vrouw Tineke. Vroman debuteerde in 1946 met de bundel Gedichten. Vroman ontving in de loop van zijn leven zowat alle belangrijke literaire prijzen die er zijn. In 2006 verscheen het dagboek Misschien tot morgen.

Liu Xia, China, is a poet, artist, and founding member of the Independent Chinese PEN Centre. Xia has been held under unofficial house arrest in her Beijing apartment since her late husband, the poet Liu Xiaobo, was named the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in October 2010.
For seven years, Liu Xia (1961) was held in her apartment without access to phones, internet, doctors of her choice, or visitors. Following the death of her husband in July 2017 and the expression of concern for her wellbeing, Xia appeared in a video in which she asked to be left alone to mourn – it is thought that she may have done this at the behest of the authorities.
The Independent PEN Centre (ICPC) report that the restrictions applied against Liu Xia have relaxed somewhat; she has access to a telephone and is allowed to leave her home, but is under constant surveillance. Colleagues at ICPC report that Liu Xia has been removed from Beijing for the duration of the National People’s Congress; it is expected that she will be returned to her Beijing home after this date.
There are reports that Liu Xia’s mental and physical health continue to suffer due to her detention.
PEN International believes that the ongoing, extra-judicial house arrest of Liu Xia is a form of punishment for the human rights work carried out by her husband, Liu Xiaobo, and is extremely concerned for her physical and psychological integrity.

Het besluit van president Trump de Amerikaanse ambassade in Israël naar Jeruzalem te verhuizen inspireerde Patti Smith tot het schrijven van een gedicht, The New Jerusalem.
Dit nieuwe, nog ongepubliceerde werk van de beroemde punkpoëet verschijnt exclusief bij Nexus als tweetalige uitgave in de Nexus Bibliotheek. Naast The New Jerusalem zal deze uitgave ook een drietal eerdere gedichten bevatten. De vertaling van de gedichten wordt verzorgd door Onno Kosters. The New Jerusalem wordt gepresenteerd bij het Nexus-symposium ‘An Education in Counterculture’, 26 mei in Amsterdam.

Patti Smith, USA 1946, is zangeres en dichteres. Als ‘Godmother of Punk’ protesteerde zij met krachtige, controversiële muziek tegen de gevestigde orde en wezenloze fabrieksarbeid in de vercommercialiseerde wereld. Ze groeide op met de muziek van Bob Dylan, leefde samen met fotograaf Robert Mapplethorpe en werd een bekend gezicht in de turbulente New Yorkse kunstscene.
In 1974 begon Smith op te treden met gitarist Lenny Kaye, met wie ze nog steeds de kern van de band The Patti Smith Group vormt. Haar debuutalbum Horses (1975) wordt gezien als een van de invloedrijkste albums in de geschiedenis van de rockmuziek. Samen met Bruce Springsteen schreef ze Because the Night, haar grootste hit. Naast vele albums schreef Smith ook dichtbundels en boeken, waaronder Just Kids (2010), haar bekroonde autobiografie over het leven in New York in de jaren zeventig en haar relatie met Mapplethorpe.

Counterculture, die term muntte socioloog Theodore Roszak voor de maatschappelijke revolte in de zestiger jaren. De hoofdstad van deze tegencultuur was New York. Eerst als broedplaats voor nieuwe visies op de kunst, het leven en de wereld: de poëzie van de Beatgeneration; de muziek van Bob Dylan; seks, drugs en rock-’n-roll. Maar later ook als strijdperk voor de Burgerrechtenbeweging, het verzet tegen de oorlog in Vietnam en tegen een materialistische, autoritaire samenleving.
Zangeres en schrijfster Patti Smith, haar gitarist en rock-’n-roll-historicus Lenny Kaye, en Dylan-biograaf Sean Wilentz – wiens vader de boekhandel 8th Street Books bestierde, waar de Beatgeneration van Allen Ginsberg opbloeide – beleefden, vormden en beschreven deze bijzondere jaren.
Een middag lang vertellen zij, aan de hand van beelden en muziek, het verhaal over wat het was en wat het voor ons nu nog kan betekenen: An Education in Counterculture.

Lenny Kaye

Lenny Kaye is gitarist, componist en schrijver. Als jonge zanger en gitarist toerde en speelde hij met verschillende bands en werkte hij als journalist voor Amerikaanse muziekbladen. Begin jaren zeventig ontmoette hij Patti Smith in de platenzaak in New York waar hij werkte. Kaye maakte elf albums met The Patti Smith Group en speelde ook in de Jim Caroll Band en Lenny Kaye Connection. Daarnaast werkte hij samen met vele andere prominente musici en artiesten, waaronder Allen Ginsberg, R.E.M. en Suzanne Vega. Momenteel werkt hij aan zijn boek Lightning Striking, over de geschiedenis van de rock-’n-roll. In 2011 werd Kaye geridderd tot Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
Sean Wilentz
Verenigde Staten, 1951, historicus en biograaf van Bob Dylan
Sean Wilentz is schrijver en hoogleraar Amerikaanse geschiedenis aan Princeton. Zijn vader Eli Wilentz was eigenaar van 8th Street Bookshop, het literaire middelpunt van New York in de jaren vijftig en zestig. Zo groeide Wilentz op tussen grootheden van de Beatgeneration zoals Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg en William S. Burroughs, die de boekhandel geregeld bezochten. Wilentz studeerde aan Columbia en Oxford, en promoveerde aan Yale. Zijn bekendste werken zijn het monumentale The Rise of American Democracy (2005); The Age of Reagan (2008); en Bob Dylan in America (2010), over Dylans plaats in de Amerikaanse cultuurgeschiedenis. Wilentz is huishistoricus van de officiële site van Bob Dylan, en schrijft geregeld voor onder meer The New Republic, The New York Times Book Review en Dissent.

De Parelduiker pakt het thema van de Boekenweek op en stelt de vraag: hoezo natuur?
In dit themanummer naar aanleiding van de Boekenweek vier verhalen over schrijvers en kunstenaars die ieder een ‘andere’ kant van de natuur leerden kennen.
Joris van Casteren volgde de voetsporen van Gerard Bilders (1838-1865). In het vieze Amsterdam ging deze jonge schrijver en landschapsschilder op tragische wijze ten onder. Tot op zijn sterfbed, in een benauwd pand aan een stinkende gracht, hunkerde hij naar de natuur en het buitenleven.
Madelon de Keizer schrijft over Albert Verwey. Anders dan diens vriend Willem Kloos, die het bij de stad en zijn verlokkingen hield, koos Verwey na zijn huwelijk met Kitty van Vloten voor een leven dichter bij de natuur en stichtte met haar een gezin in een huis op een duin te Noordwijk. Zij zetten zich in voor het herstel van de band tussen mens en natuur, die door de verstedelijking teloor dreigde te gaan.
Nescio bezong, zo schrijft biografe Lieneke Frerichs, onbezorgd de schoonheid van zomerse glooiende korenvelden, terwijl hij met zijn dochters door Noord-Frankrijk fietste.
Willem van Toorn ten slotte zette zich op initiatief van kunstschilder Willem den Ouden in voor zorgvuldige, vernuftiger dijkverbeteringen die het Nederlandse rivierenlandschap zoveel mogelijk zouden sparen, aldus Marco Daane. Hij laat zien dat Van Toorns betrokkenheid hierbij ook sporen heeft achtergelaten in zijn literaire werk.

Lucebert verscheen als een komeet, zo schreef Gerrit Kouwenaar, en maakte zich binnen vijf jaar als dichter en later als schilder waar. Tot op de dag van vandaag wordt hij gezien als een van de grootste dichters in ons taalgebied.
Kouwenaar schreef ook: ‘Wij zijn allemaal van de oorlog, het leed en hoge tonen.’ Wat dat voor Lucebert (1924-1994) betekende, beschrijft Wim Hazeu in deze meeslepende biografie, die voor een deel gebaseerd is op eerder ontoegankelijke of onbekende bronnen. Publiceerde naast verschillende romans en dichtbundels omvangrijke biografieën van Achterberg, Slauerhoff (bekroond met de biografieprijs van de Dordtse Academie), M.C. Escher en S. Vestdijk (op deze biografie is hij aan de Groningse Universiteit gepromoveerd).
Ook bezorgde hij de briefwisseling tussen S. Vestdijk en Henriëtte van Eyk, Wij zijn van elkaar (2007). In 2012 verscheen zijn biografie over Marten Toonder waarvoor hij toegang kreeg tot de nalatenschap van Marten en Jan Gerhard Toonder en Toonders vrouw Phiny Dick.

Menno Wigman (Beverwijk, 10 oktober 1966 – Amsterdam, 1 februari 2018) was een Nederlands dichter, bloemlezer en vertaler. Hij stierf vandaag op 51-jarige leeftijd in het VU medisch centrum in Amsterdam.
Van 1984 tot aan zijn dood publiceerde Wigman 14 dichtbundels. Voor zijn werk ontving Menno Wigman in 2002 de Jan Campert-prijs en in 2015 de A. Roland Holst-Penning. In de jaren 2012-2013 was hij stadsdichter van Amsterdam.
Vandaag schreef zijn uitgever Prometheus in een verklaring: “Wij treuren om het verlies van een van de grootste dichters van ons taalgebied. Menno Wigman was een van die weinige dichters die zowel zijn vakgenoten als het grote, in literatuur geïnteresseerde publiek voor zijn dichtkunst wist te winnen. Zijn dood is een slag voor de Nederlandse poëzie.”
Nu lig ik op een zaal, mijn hart, die logge spier,
verlaat me, laf als een gedicht laat het me staan
en voor het eind van deze avond zakt de dood

‘De avond is ongemak’ is de debuutroman van dichter en schrijver Marieke Lucas Rijneveld.
‘De avond is ongemak’ is het schrijnende verhaal van een religieus boerengezin dat wordt getroffen door de dood van een kind.
Matthies komt op een dag niet meer terug van het schaatsen en laat zijn zusje Jas in totale verwarring achter. Door de ogen van de dertienjarige Jas zien we hoe de familieleden elk op hun eigen manier omgaan met het verlies. Vader en moeder zijn volledig verlamd door verdriet en zien niet hoe Jas en haar zusje Hanna en haar broer Obbe ondertussen langzaam ontsporen.
Onder leiding van Obbe ondernemen ze morbide experimenten met dieren en Hanna en Jas dromen hartstochtelijk van een Redder, een man als Boudewijn de Groot, een man die hen mee kan nemen naar de Overkant en hen in kan wijden in de geheimen van hun seksualiteit.
Marieke Lucas Rijneveld geldt als een van de grootste nieuwe talenten van de Nederlandse letteren. In 2015 debuteerde ze met de meermaals herdrukte dichtbundel ‘Kalfsvlies’, die werd bekroond met de C. Buddingh’ Prijs voor het beste poëziedebuut. In de Volkskrant werd ze vervolgens uitgeroepen tot literair talent van het jaar. Haar voordracht was veelvuldig te horen op literaire podia als Crossing Border, Lowlands, De Jonge Schrijversavond en de Nacht van de Poëzie, en haar gedichten en verhalen verschenen in een groot aantal literaire tijdschriften, waaronder Hollands Maandblad, VPRO Gids en De Revisor.
Rijneveld groeide op in een gereformeerd boerengezin in Noord-Brabant en woont tegenwoordig in Utrecht, de stad die haar in 2015 het C.C.S. Cronestipendium toekende en de Hollands Maandblad Aanmoedigingsbeurs. Naast haar bestaan als schrijver werkt ze op een melkveebedrijf.
Vandaag -31 januari 2018- verschijnt bij Atlas Contact haar debuutroman: ‘De avond is ongemak.’
