To Winter
Stay, season of calm love and soulful snows!
There is a subtle sweetness in the sun,
The ripples on the stream’s breast gaily run,
The wind more boisterously by me blows,
And each succeeding day now longer grows.
The birds a gladder music have begun,
The squirrel, full of mischief and of fun,
From maples’ topmost branch the brown twig throws.
I read these pregnant signs, know what they mean:
I know that thou art making ready to go.
Oh stay! I fled a land where fields are green
Always, and palms wave gently to and fro,
And winds are balmy, blue brooks ever sheen,
To ease my heart of its impassioned woe.

gekantelde horizon
akkers
ver na tijd van oogst
vol zware, zwarte klei
liggen
volledig opengereten
van onder naar boven
tot aan horizon doorkliefd
ruw ontbloot, groots
in winterkaal
aan elementen
overgeleverd landschap
waar nu zelfs vogels
hard
en grimmig ogen, ons beloeren
solitaire bomen
grommen tegen harde wind
boeren, koeien
uit het beeld zijn weggekropen
dapper, onverstoorbaar
rijdt ons treintje
verder langs de open wond
immuun voor taferelen buiten
hangen bijna alle hoofden
richting lichtend, lokkend
landschap beneden,
smartphones

Destijds woonde ik in een land waar mijn jonge
oren luisterden naar zwakgewortelde preken, en
de kapelaan ons aanried aan kleine zonden niet
al te zwaar te tillen. Het was in de dagen dat we
nog wel eens holden en niet dachten aan talmen,

As van kerstdromen
dwarrelt door de lucht
naast spokend karkas van
te jong gestorven boom.
Afvallige dozen, groot
fladderen over de weg
als losgebroken vogels
een paard zonder toom.
Aan slierten rouw klampt
oude jaar zich nog vast

Hoe het kan gaan
Ik hoor een man zeggen hoe hij vernomen had
dat zijn moeder begraven gaat worden en dat
hij in een stoffig album wel foto’s van haar zou
gaan bekijken. Erheen? Neen. Want zij. Toen
hij. Te lang. En daarna. Zijn smoesjes buitelen
over elkaar heen als lottoballetjes in de trommel.

In 1980 – Ik, de zelfzuchtige aap worden de levens van Ratel, Dr. Pink, Klein Yani, Chloë, Louise-Michelle, Schmaus en Emiel de B. verder opgepakt. Anno 1980 maken zij deel uit van de no-future generatie.
De maatschappij biedt werkeloosheid, armoe en woningnood, dus zoeken ze hun heil en toekomst buiten de kleinburgerlijke paden, in de kraakscene, het activisme, new wave muziek en seksuele escapades.
Het ontredderde X-Burg, beroofd van haar textielnijverheid, biedt het stratenplan voor brutale bondige scènes, al doolt Emiel de B. liever door Berlijn. Je hoeft maar een hoek om te slaan om je vast te lopen in het verleden en te beseffen dat de onontkoombare psychogeografie van de stad in iedere steen is verankerd.

Nick J. Swarth is geboren en getogen in Tilburg, waar hij woont en werkt. Hij is een artistieke vijfpoot, actief als schrijver, dichter, performer, muzikant en beeldend kunstenaar. Eind 2020 verscheen zijn debuutroman, ‘1980 – De plasserparadox’, het eerste deel uit een trilogie over een failliete stad in het activistische jaar 1980.
Swarth was de tweede stadsdichter van Tilburg (2005-2007), hetgeen resulteerde in de bundel ‘Naked City Poems’. Andere publicaties zijn de catalogus ‘Horror Vacui | een docudrama in 14 staties’ (verslag van een schandaal verwekkend kunstproject, i.s.m. Jeroen de Leijer) en poëzie in de bundels ‘Mijn onsterfelijke lever’ en ‘¡Mondo Manga!’
Swarth is de voice ‘n’ noise van het guerrilla rock trio Betonfraktion, dat drie platen uitbracht. Het duo Swagemakers Swarth biedt improvisaties voor viool en stem. Janine Ensslin is de ideale gastvrouw voor alle denkbare gelegenheden. Ze draait evenmin haar hand om voor een fijne, eigenzinnige verhandeling op bestelling.

A dynamic, moving hybrid work that celebrates Black youth, often too fleeting, and examines Black lives lost to police violence.
In this astonishing volume of poems and lyric prose, Whiting Award–winner A. Van Jordan draws comparisons to Black characters in Shakespearean plays―Caliban and Sycorax from?The Tempest, Aaron the Moor from?Titus Andronicus, and the eponymous antihero of? Othello―to mourn the deaths of Black people, particularly Black children, at the hands of police officers. What do these characters, and the ways they are defined by the white figures who surround them, have in common with Tamir Rice, Trayvon Martin, and other Black people killed in the twenty-first century?
Balancing anger and grief with celebration, Jordan employs an elastic variety of poetic forms, including ekphrastic sestinas inspired by the photography of Malick Sidibé, fictional dialogues, and his signature definition poems that break down the insidious power of words like “fair,” “suspect,” and “juvenile.” He invents a new form of window poems, based on a characterization exercise, to see Shakespeare’s Black characters in three dimensions, and finds contemporary parallels in the way these characters are othered, rendered at once undesirable and hypersexualized, a threat and a joke.
At once a stunning inquiry into the roots of racist violence and a moving recognition of the joy of Black youth before the world takes hold, When I Waked, I Cried to Dream Again expresses the preciousness and precarity of life.
A. Van Jordan is the author of four collections: Rise, which won the PEN/Oakland Josephine Miles Award (Tia Chucha Press, 2001); M-A-C-N-O-L-I-A, (2005), which was listed as one the Best Books of 2005 by The London Times; Quantum Lyrics, (2007); and The Cineaste, (2013), W.W. Norton & Co. Jordan has been awarded a Whiting Writers Award, an Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, and a Pushcart Prize. He is also a recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship (2007), a United States Artists Fellowship (2009), and a Lannan Literary Award in Poetry (2015).
