There’s a
strong, vibrant
formal tradition
in hip hop:
the story rhyme
Rather than the bragging and boasting of many raps, in a story rhyme the MC presents a narrative – a street update of Ovid or Homer if you want to get hifalutin about it. Traced back by some to “The Message” by Melle Mel, few would dispute that it reached some sort of a peak with Slick Rick’s first album, and was carried forward by the likes of Biggie and Eminem. It also had a profound influence on rap in the UK, with artists like Roots Manuva using the form to represent themselves and their city in a myriad of new ways.
Kate Tempest is best known as a poet, perhaps a performance poet or a spoken word artist. She has a novel coming out next year with Bloomsbury. But ask Kate what she is and she’s more likely to say she’s a rapper who writes. That’s her first love. Listen to her voice, her cadences, the accent, and you’ll hear more of Skinnyman than Seamus Heaney, a veteran of Deal Real’s legendary Friday night rap battles but also someone at home doing a book reading at Foyles.
Kate Tempest understands the story rhyme, loves it. Which is why Everybody Down is something like a “novel rhyme” – twelve ‘chapters’ telling one long, complex story, a unique, one-off project, almost unique in the history of the form.
Dan Carey aka Mr Dan is one of the UK’s best known and most highly-rated producers. He’s worked with or remixed Bat For Lashes, Toy, MIA, Chairlift and Hot Chip (and just about everyone in between). When the two met, Carey invited Tempest to come through to his South London studio to muck about on a track or two. In a burst of intense creativity, they put down the whole twelve track album in a fortnight having spent almost a year developing the characters and story.
The result is a revelation. Tempest takes the tropes of the hip hop story – drugs, money, gangsters – and brings them to life in a whole new way, a London way, but also a completely personal way, where she inhabits the different characters and shows the boredom and fear in their lives rather than some faked glamour, shows more than anything their need for love.
Carey, meanwhile, sculpts soundscapes that pay tribute to the roots of hip hop while melding into the themes Tempest addresses, tough and gritty but intensely musical, the sound of a wet winter’s night out in London. He even got US singer-songwriter Willy Mason to contribute a chorus! In the end we get an audio story Dickens might have tried to write, one which is, in Tempest’s words, quite simply about “loving more.”
Kate Tempest has released records on Greco-Roman and Speedy Wunderground and for a long time fronted the band Sound Of Rum (Sunday Best). She won the Ted Hughes Poetry Prize for her play “Brand New Ancients” , which led The Guardian to describe her as “one of the brightest talents around.” Her forthcoming novel for Bloomsbury features the characters and the world built in Everybody Down, with a chapter correlating to each track.
But it’s here on this stunning, sustained piece of work, where each track works on it own, that music fans will hear beyond doubt just what a talent she is.
Kate Tempest started out when she was 16, rapping at strangers on night busses and pestering mc’s to let her on the mic at raves. Ten years later she is a published playwright, novelist, poet and respected recording artist. Her work includes Balance, her first album with band Sound of Rum; Everything Speaks in its Own Way her first collection of poems, the critically acclaimed plays Wasted, Glasshouse and Hopelessly Devoted. Brand New Ancients, her self-performed epic poem to a live score, won the Ted Hughes prize 2013 and the Herald Angel at Edinburgh Fringe.It has sold out tours in the UK and New York and is published by Picador. Her second collection of poetry, Hold Your Own, will be published by Picador on October 2014. Her debut novel, The Bricks That Built The Houses, sold in a highly competitive auction to Bloomsbury and will be published in territories including the UK, US, France, Holland and Brazil in Spring 2015. Excitingly, each track on the record correlates with a chapter in the novel, in a groundbreaking cross-genre experience.
Her single Our Town, with producers letthemusicplay was recently released on Greco-Roman records. Kate has featured on songs with Sinead O Connor, Bastille, the King Blues, Damien Dempsey and Landslide. She has toured extensively, supporting Billy Bragg on his UK tour, as well as supporting Scroobius Pip, Femi Kuti, Saul Williams and John Cooper Clarke. She is 2 x slam winner at the prestigious Nu-Yorican poetry cafe in New York and has played all the major UK and European music festivals either solo or with Sound of Rum. She’s headlined Latitude festival and has been featured on the BBC’s Glastonbury highlights, Channel 4, BBC Radio 1,4 and 6, as well as XFM and the Charlie Rose Show (Bloomberg) in the US.

Op zondag 3 augustus 2014 vindt in de boeken- en Hanzestad Deventer de 26e editie plaats van de Deventer Boekenmarkt.
In totaal zijn 878 kramen gevuld met vele duizenden boeken: ruim 6 kilometer markt met deelname van gerenommeerde boekhandelaren en antiquariaten uit heel Nederland. De markt begint om 9.30 uur, maar al om 7.00 uur zijn er de eerste bezoekers.

Voorafgaand en tijdens de Deventer Boekenmarkt worden er tal van activiteiten in Deventer georganiseerd rondom het thema boeken.
De avond voorafgaand aan de Boekenmarkt, op zaterdag 2 augustus, vindt poëziefestival Het Tuinfeest plaats.

Ballustrada met nieuw werk van Noord-Brabantse dichters: Rubriek Laaglandse Poëzie samengesteld door Bert Bevers
Nadat Bert Bevers (1954) voor de serie Laaglandse Poëzie in het Zeeuwse literaire tijdschrift Ballustrada eerder dichters uit de provincies Antwerpen en West-Vlaanderen bloemleesde, stelt hij daarvoor nu een portfolio samen met kersvers werk van Noord-Brabantse dichters: Martijn Benders, Eddie Besselsen, Martin Beversluis, Pieter Bon, Frans August Brocatus, Wim Daniëls, Olaf Douwes Dekker, Ewoud Willem van Doorn, Maarten van den Elzen, Albert Hagenaars, Marijke Hanegraaf, Kees Hermis, Martien J.G. de Jong, Jef van Kempen, Astrid Lampe, Yvonne Né, Martijn Neggers, Esther Porcelijn, Nick J. Swarth en Carina van der Walt.
Ballustrada is een literair tijdschrift voor het Nederlandse taalgebied, ontstaan en volwassen geworden in Zeeland. Twee keer per jaar verschijnt er een uitgave van minstens 100 pagina’s. Kate Tempest: Brand New Ancients On Film
– Part 3 –
In November 2013, performance poet Kate Tempest and Battersea Arts Centre, embarked on a journey together to tour the award winning show Brand New Ancients.
The tour includes 9 London venues including the Royal Opera House, Harrow Arts Centre, Lyric Hammersmith and Battersea Arts Centre, as well as 5 regional venues across the country from Contact in Manchester to Brighton Dome as well as heading to New York at St. Ann’s Warehouse.
In collaboration with director Joe Roberts, Battersea Arts Centre has produced three short films interpreting Kate’s spoken word through moving image, which will be released across the tour.

The trail’s end
You’ve read the story of Jesse James
of how he lived and died.
If you’re still in need;
of something to read,
here’s the story of Bonnie and Clyde.
Now Bonnie and Clyde are the Barrow gang
I’m sure you all have read.
how they rob and steal;
and those who squeal,
are usually found dying or dead.
There’s lots of untruths to these write-ups;
they’re not as ruthless as that.
their nature is raw;
they hate all the law,
the stool pigeons, spotters and rats.
They call them cold-blooded killers
they say they are heartless and mean.
But I say this with pride
that I once knew Clyde,
when he was honest and upright and clean.
But the law fooled around;
kept taking him down,
and locking him up in a cell.
Till he said to me;
“I’ll never be free,
so I’ll meet a few of them in hell”
The road was so dimly lighted
there were no highway signs to guide.
But they made up their minds;
if all roads were blind,
they wouldn’t give up till they died.
The road gets dimmer and dimmer
sometimes you can hardly see.
But it’s fight man to man
and do all you can,
for they know they can never be free.
From heart-break some people have suffered
from weariness some people have died.
But take it all in all;
our troubles are small,
till we get like Bonnie and Clyde.
If a policeman is killed in Dallas
and they have no clue or guide.
If they can’t find a fiend,
they just wipe their slate clean
and hang it on Bonnie and Clyde.
There’s two crimes committed in America
not accredited to the Barrow mob.
They had no hand;
in the kidnap demand,
nor the Kansas City Depot job.
A newsboy once said to his buddy;
“I wish old Clyde would get jumped.
In these awfull hard times;
we’d make a few dimes,
if five or six cops would get bumped”
The police haven’t got the report yet
but Clyde called me up today.
He said,”Don’t start any fights;
we aren’t working nights,
we’re joining the NRA.”
From Irving to West Dallas viaduct
is known as the Great Divide.
Where the women are kin;
and the men are men,
and they won’t “stool” on Bonnie and Clyde.
If they try to act like citizens
and rent them a nice little flat.
About the third night;
they’re invited to fight,
by a sub-gun’s rat-tat-tat.
They don’t think they’re too smart or desperate
they know that the law always wins.
They’ve been shot at before;
but they do not ignore,
that death is the wages of sin.
Some day they’ll go down together
they’ll bury them side by side.
To few it’ll be grief,
to the law a relief
but it’s death for Bonnie and Clyde.
A few weeks before Bonny Parker was killed by 26 bullets from the police, she wrote this poem which she sent to her mother.

Schrijver en dichter Erik Menkveld (1959 – 2014) overleden
Op zondag 30 maart is dichter en romancier Erik Menkveld overleden. De in 1959 in Eindhoven geboren Menkveld studeerde Nederlands in Amsterdam en werkte na zijn studie tot 1998 voor De Bezige Bij en aansluitend voor Poetry International.
Sinds 2002 besteedde hij zijn tijd voornamelijk aan het schrijven van poëzie en proza, de laatste jaren combineerde hij dat met literatuurlessen op een lyceum. Ook was hij poëziecriticus voor de Volkskrant.
Erik Menkveld wordt vrijdag aanstaande om 13.00 uur begraven op Zorgvlied. Hij laat een vrouw en drie kinderen na.

NRC Handelsblad neemt het niet zo nauw met het laatste gedicht van Leo Vroman (1915-2014)
In de NRC van 1 maart 2014 (blz 12) stond het laatste gedicht dat Leo Vroman voor zijn overlijden schreef. NRC Handelsblad drukte het gedicht foutief af. Het eerste woord van de laatste regel stond gedrukt als laatste woord van de voorafgaande regel, waardoor het rijmpaar verdwenen was.
Cornelis W. Schoneveld, oud-docent historische Engelse letterkunde en vertaalwetenschapper aan de Universiteit van Leiden èn medewerker aan fleursdumal.nl, attendeerde de redactie van NRC op de vergissing.

Her theatre writing includes Wasted for Paines Plough, Brand New Ancients for the BAC, and Glasshouse for Cardboard Citizens.
She has written poetry for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Barnado’s, Channel 4 and the BBC. She has worked with Amnesty International to create a schools pack helping secondary school children write their own protest songs, and was invited to write and perform a new poem for Aung San Suu Kyi when she recieved the Ambassador of Conscience award in Dublin.
Kate released her debut album Balance with Sound of Rum in 2011. She has featured on songs with Sinead O Connor, Bastille, the King Blues, Damien Dempsey, Pink Punk, and Landslide. She has just finished recording a new solo album Everybody Down with acclaimed music producer Dan Carey. She’s toured extensively, supporting Billy Bragg on his UK tour, as well as supporting Scroobius Pip, Femi Kuti, Saul Williams and John Cooper Clarke. She is 2 x slam winner at the prestigious Nu-Yorican poetry cafe in New York. She’s played all the major UK and European music festivals either solo or with Sound of Rum. She’s headlined Latitude festival and her poetry has been featured on the BBC’s Glastonbury highlights. In 2012 she launched her first poetry book to a sell out crowd at the Old Vic theatre in London.
She’s led workshops in schools, colleges and youth groups across the UK and taught a creative writing class at Yale. She’s given lectures at Goldsmiths University and to newly qualified English teachers for the Prince’s Teaching Institute.

Leo Vroman overleden
Leo Vroman (Gouda, 10 april 1915 – Fort Worth, 22 februari 2014) was dichter, prozaïst, essayist, illustrator en hematoloog. Hij studeerde biologie in Utrecht en vluchtte in 1940 naar Nederlands-Indië. In 1945 werd hij uit Japanse gevangenschap bevrijd en vestigde zich in Verenigde Staten, waar hij tot op de dag van vandaag woonde, samen met zijn vrouw Tineke. Vroman debuteerde in 1946 met de bundel Gedichten. Talloze publicaties en zowat alle belangrijke literaire prijzen heeft hij op zijn naam staan.
Ik wil je zo makkelijk niet kwijt,
zie je liefst een hele tijd
naliggen en zitten
alsof je zo pas nog die witte
zakdoek hebt uitgespreid
op het bolle slapende beest.
Helaas, dit zoek ik het meest:
het schadeloos besmetten
van je alledaagse leven
om je bij voorbeeld even
het optellen te beletten
van geld, het verdelen van pap.
Dit klinkt misschien als een grap,
een fladder-, een eiwitlicht,
of zelfs kodderig gedicht.

Bundel bij 50 jaar uitgeverij Opwenteling
Onnaspeurbaar: van Frans Kuipers tot Hans Vlek
“Tijd, Iedereen zegt dat je erg veranderd bent.” dichtte Frans Kuipers in Gottegot & Bubble Up (1977, vers 6). Het was niet de eerste bundel die de Eindhovense uitgeverij Opwenteling van Kuipers uitbracht. ‘Zoals wij’, het debuut van deze dichter, verscheen al in 1965 bij Opwenteling. Niemand kon nog vermoeden dat Gerrit Komrij later negen gedichten van Kuipers zou opnemen in zijn vermaarde bloemlezing.
Het gedicht ‘vers 6’ opent de jubileumbundel ‘Onnaspeurbaar. 50 jaar Opwenteling.’ die Opwenteling op 29 december 2013 presenteerde. De bundel bevat een kleine 50 gedichten. Samen laten ze zien hoeveel talent er in 50 jaar bij Opwenteling is verschenen. De bundel is daarmee overigens geen doorsnede van een periode. Het is eerder een bloemlezing waarmee de huidige Opwentelaars aangeven hoe Opwenteling anno 2013 denkt over poëtische kwaliteit. In die zin markeert de bundel eerder het begin van een nieuwe periode dan de afsluiting van een voorbije.
Opwenteling werd in 1962 geboren. Geestelijk vader was Joop Oversteegen, die het eigen geluid van Brabantse dichters wilde laten horen. Dat hij daarin geslaagd is, daarover bestaat geen twijfel. Opwenteling ontwikkelde zich tot een ideële uitgeverij, gerund door vrijwilligers, die honderden dichters de kans gaf te debuteren. Voor een aantal bleef het bij een debuut. Anderen, onder wie Frans Kuipers, maar ook Maria van der Steen, Frans Babylon, Hans Vlek, Hans van de Waarsenburg groeiden uit tot nationaal bekende poëtische grootheden.

P.C. Hooft-prijs 2014 voor Willem Jan Otten
Het bestuur van de Stichting P.C. Hooft-prijs voor Letterkunde heeft maandag 9 december besloten de P.C. Hooft-prijs 2014 toe te kennen aan Willem Jan Otten (Amsterdam, 1951). Deze oeuvreprijs is dit jaar bestemd voor beschouwend proza en wordt uitgereikt op een feestelijke bijeenkomst in het Letterkundig Museum, op donderdag 22 mei 2014, 1 dag na de sterfdag van de naamgever van de prijs, de dichter P.C. Hooft (1581-1647), onze grootste renaissancedichter.
De P.C. Hooft-prijs 2014 voor het gehele oeuvre van Willem Jan Otten is toegekend op voordracht van een jury bestaande uit Désanne van Brederode, Elma Drayer, Annet Mooij, Jeroen van Kan en Paul Schnabel (voorzitter). Recente eerdere laureaten in het genre essay waren H.J.A. Hofland (2011), Abram de Swaan (2008) en Frédéric Bastet (2005). Aan de prijs is een bedrag verbonden van € 60.000.
Fragment uit het juryrapport: Willem Jan Otten kan gezien worden als een essayist pur sang. Hij is origineel en persoonlijk in de keuzen van zijn onderwerpen. Als lezer merk je hoe hij al schrijvend op zoek is naar een ook voor hem nog onbekende uitkomst van zijn denken.
