Met De lenige liefde (1969) werd Herman de Coninck op slag de populairste dichter van Vlaanderen, ‘de man die zijn volk poëzie leerde lezen’.
Ook als leraar, journalist en geëngageerd hoofdredacteur van het Nieuw Wereldtijdschrift was hij van grote betekenis.
Na een leven vol poëzie bezweek hij in 1997 op een literair congres in Lissabon aan een hartaanval.
Nu is er dan eindelijk een biografie van de hand van Thomas Eyskens op basis van vele gesprekken met familie, vrienden en collega’s, nooit eerder gepubliceerd fotomateriaal en nagelaten correspondentie. Een rijk portret van ‘leven en werken, schrijven en liefhebben’.

Biografie: Paul Bezembinder studeerde theoretische natuurkunde in Nijmegen. In zijn poëzie zoekt hij in vooral klassieke versvormen en thema’s naar de balans tussen serieuze poëzie, pastiche en smartlap. Zijn gedichten (Nederlands) en vertalingen (Russisch-Nederlands) verschenen in verschillende (online) literaire tijdschriften. De Amerikaan Philip Glass kan zonder twijfel worden gerekend tot de belangrijkste componisten van de laatste vijftig jaar.
Al enkele jaren is hij een graag geziene gast hier in Melkweg. Het is namelijk alweer de vijfde keer sinds 2011. Dit jaar komt de componist wederom naar Amsterdam met zijn eigen Days And Nights Festival programma. Een festival dat is ontstaan in het Philip Glass Center for the Arts, Science, and the Environment en draait om culturele vernieuwing.
In het kader van Amsterdam Dance Event voert hij op zondag 22 oktober drie van zijn pianowerken uit. Vergezeld door Maki Namekawa en Dennis Russell Davies zijn dit ‘Mad Rush’ (1980), ‘Four Movements For Two Pianos’ (2008) en ‘The Suite from Les Enfants Terribles’ (1996).
Daarnaast presenteren het Amstel Saxophone Quartet & DJ/producer Kypski ‘Glass On The Roof’ ter gelegenheid van de 80e verjaardag van de componist. ‘Glass on the Roof’ bestaat uit drie werken waarbij de turntablist Kypski en het Quartet hun gezamenlijke sound aftasten en ontdekken.

De reeds 80-jarige pionier Philip Glass komt terug naar Amsterdam Dance Event met zijn Days And Nights Festival programma. Daarnaast presenteren het Amstel Saxophone Quartet & DJ/producer Kypski ‘Glass On The Roof’ ter gelegenheid van de 80e verjaardag van de componist. Glass, vergezeld door Maki Namekawa en Dennis Russell Davies, voert hij drie van zijn pianowerken uit, namelijk ‘Mad Rush’ (1980), ‘Four Movements For Two Pianos’ (2008) en ‘The Suite from Les Enfants Terribles’ (1996). ‘Glass on the Roof’ bestaat uit drie werken waarbij de turntablist Kypski en het Quartet hun gezamenlijke sound aftasten en ontdekken. Juliana Kálnay erzählt mit Aberwitz und aus vielen Perspektiven, es ist ein Stimmengewirr, ein Puzzle, das sich nach und nach zu einem dichten Bild fügt. Die Charaktere – Bewohner eines rätselhaften Hauses – versuchen, sich einen Reim auf die Dinge des Lebens zu machen, sich selbst und die anderen zu verstehen, tappen aber oft im Dunklen. Kálnays magischer Realismus hält die Handlung in der Schwebe, ohne ins Phantastische abzuheben, das Haus verbindet alle Elemente im Roman.
Der aspekte-Literaturpreis wird in diesem Jahr zum 39. Mal vergeben. Er ist mit 10.000 Euro dotiert und die bedeutendste Auszeichnung für deutschsprachige Erstlingsprosa. Die Preisverleihung findet am Donnerstag, 12. Oktober 2017, 11:30 Uhr im Rahmen der Frankfurter Buchmesse auf dem Blauen Sofa am ZDF-Stand statt.
Juliana Kálnay, geboren 1988 in Hamburg, wuchs zunächst in Köln und dann in Málaga auf. Sie veröffentlichte in deutsch- und spanischsprachigen Anthologien und Zeitschriften und erhielt das Arbeitsstipendium Literatur der Kulturstiftung des Landes Schleswig-Holstein 2016. Sie lebt und schreibt in Kiel. »Eine kurze Chronik des allmählichen Verschwindens« ist ihr erster Roman.

Op 21 juli 2017 was het vijftig jaar geleden dat in Wyck-Maastricht de dichter Pierre Kemp (1886-1967) overleed. Pierre Kemp, bekroond met diverse prijzen voor zijn dichterlijk oeuvre, behoort tot de grootheden van de Nederlandse poëzie uit de twintigste eeuw.
Daarnaast was hij een begenadigd tekenaar en schilder, wiens werk deel uitmaakt van de kerncollectie Limburg van het Bonnefantenmuseum.
Voor het eerst toont het Bonnefantenmuseum nu Kemps werken op papier, merendeel schetsen en studies, die dateren uit de jaren 1905 tot 1913. Een bijzonder onderdeel van de tentoonstelling is het drietal schetsboekjes dat bewaard is gebleven uit 1906–1907. Een van de boekjes wordt als facsimile uitgegeven, met een uitgebreide toelichting door Wiel Kusters, die ook optreedt als gastconservator van de tentoonstelling.
Pierre Kemp, in 1954 bekroond met de Poëzieprijs van de Gemeente Amsterdam, in 1956 met de Constantijn Huygensprijs en twee jaar later met de P.C. Hooftprijs, behoort tot de grootheden van de Nederlandse poëzie uit de twintigste eeuw. Het heeft er in Kemps jonge jaren een tijdlang naar uitgezien dat hij zijn levensvervulling zou zoeken in de schilderkunst.

Ter gelegenheid van Kemps zeventigste verjaardag, in juni van dit jaar, verscheen: Leesjongen. Verzamelde gedichten 1978-2017 (Cossee, 2017).
Ter gelegenheid van Kemps vijftigste sterfdag verschijnt in september 2017 tevens een bloemlezing uit zijn dichterlijke werk: Het regent in de trompetten – De mooiste gedichten van Pierre Kemp, van Wiel Kusters en Ingrid Wijk (Uitgeverij Vantilt, Nijmegen).
Wiel Kusters (1947) is dichter, essayist en honorair hoogleraar aan Universiteit Maastricht. Voor het Bonnefantenmuseum maakte hij in 2001 de tentoonstelling: Huisraad Onraad, oder die Dinge in der Umwelt der Fliege. In 2010 publiceerde hij de biografie Pierre Kemp. Een leven (Vantilt). Tot zijn bekendste werken van de laatste jaren behoort: In en onder het dorp. Mijnwerkersleven in Limburg (Vantilt, 2012).

Theo van Doesburg richtte in 1917 het tijdschrift De Stijl om het gedachtegoed van deze Nederlandse kunstbeweging weer te geven.
In 1920 nam hij het pseudoniem I.K. Bonset aan en publiceerde onder deze naam woord- en klankbeelden. Hij vond inspiratie bij onder andere Dadaïstische en Futuristische dichters die eveneens experimenteerden met woord en beeld. Dichters als de Italiaan Tommaso Marinetti en de Franse Stephane Mallarmé maar ook zijn vriendschap met de Tilburgse dichter Anthony Kok waren van invloed.
Er is een lijn te ontdekken tussen de experimenten van De Stijl als ook die van de Nederlandse schrijver en dichter Paul van Ostaijen (die in 1921 in het tijdschrift De Stijl negatief werd beoordeeld) naar de zogenaamde Concrete of Visuele poëzie, waarin het minder gaat over de klankkleur maar meer om het zichtbare beeld.

De tentoonstelling vindt plaats in de bibliotheek, deze is geopend van dinsdag tot en met vrijdag van 11.00 tot 17.00 uur. Weekends gesloten. De bibliotheek is gratis toegankelijk.

Die Werke von Michel de Montaigne – die Essais und das Tagebuch der Reise nach Italien – hat die Andere Bibliothek in den gerühmten Neuübersetzungen von Hans Stilett veröffentlicht. Montaigne zählt zu den Ikonen unserer Bibliothek – wie selbstverständlich gehört auch Stefan Zweigs Blick auf ihn in unser Repertoire.

Kazuo Ishiguro was born on November 8, 1954 in Nagasaki, Japan.The family moved to the United Kingdom when he was five years old; he returned to visit his country of birth only as an adult.
In the late 1970s, Ishiguro graduated in English and Philosophy at the University of Kent, and then went on to study Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia.
Kazuo Ishiguro has been a full-time author ever since his first book, “A Pale View of Hills” (1982). Both his first novel and the subsequent one, “An Artist of the Floating World” (1986) take place in Nagasaki a few years after the Second World War. The themes Ishiguro is most associated with are already present here: memory, time, and self-delusion. This is particularly notable in his most renowned novel, “The Remains of the Day” (1989), which was turned into film with Anthony Hopkins acting as the duty-obsessed butler Stevens.
Ishiguro’s writings are marked by a carefully restrained mode of expression, independent of whatever events are taking place. At the same time, his more recent fiction contains fantastic features. With the dystopian work “Never Let Me Go” (2005), Ishiguro introduced a cold undercurrent of science fiction into his work. In this novel, as in several others, we also find musical influences. A striking example is the collection of short stories titled “Nocturnes: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall” (2009), where music plays a pivotal role in depicting the characters’ relationships. In his latest novel, “The Buried Giant” (2015), an elderly couple go on a road trip through an archaic English landscape, hoping to reunite with their adult son, whom they have not seen for years. This novel explores, in a moving manner, how memory relates to oblivion, history to the present, and fantasy to reality.
Apart from his eight books, Ishiguro has also written scripts for film and television.

The show opens in 1963 at the height of the Civil Rights movement and its dreams of integration. In its wake emerged more militant calls for Black Power: a rallying cry for African American pride, autonomy and solidarity, drawing inspiration from newly independent African nations.
Artists responded to these times by provoking, confronting, and confounding expectations. Their momentum makes for an electrifying visual journey. Vibrant paintings, powerful murals, collage, photography, revolutionary clothing designs and sculptures made with Black hair, melted records, and tights – the variety of artworks reflects the many viewpoints of artists and collectives at work during these explosive times.
Some engage with legendary figures from the period, with paintings in homage to political leaders Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Angela Davis, musician John Coltrane and sporting hero Jack Johnson. Muhammad Ali appears in Andy Warhol’s famous painting.

Homage to Catalonia is Orwell’s personal account of his observations in the Spanish Civil War. The book was first published in the United Kingdom in 1938.
In 1936, originally intending merely to report on the Spanish Civil War as a journalist, George Orwell found himself embroiled as a participant—as a member of the Workers’ Party of Marxist Unity.
