HANS LEYBOLD: ENDE

Hans Leybold
(1892-1914)

Ende

Die Wellen meiner bunten Räusche sind verdampft.
Breit schlagen, schwer und müd
die Ströme meines Lebens über Bänke
von Sand.
Mir schmerzen die Gelenke.
In mein Gehirn
hat eine maßlos große Faust sich eingekrampft.

VIRGINIA WOOLF: BLUE & GREEN

Virginia_Woolf12Virginia Woolf
(1882-1941)

6. Blue & Green
(from: Monday or Tuesday)

GREEN

The ported fingers of glass hang downwards. The light slides down the glass, and drops a pool of green. All day long the ten fingers of the lustre drop green upon the marble. The feathers of parakeets — their harsh cries — sharp blades of palm trees — green, too; green needles glittering in the sun. But the hard glass drips on to the marble; the pools hover above the dessert sand; the camels lurch through them; the pools settle on the marble; rushes edge them; weeds clog them; here and there a white blossom; the frog flops over; at night the stars are set there unbroken. Evening comes, and the shadow sweeps the green over the mantelpiece; the ruffled surface of ocean. No ships come; the aimless waves sway beneath the empty sky. It’s night; the needles drip blots of blue. The green’s out.

BLUE

The snub-nosed monster rises to the surface and spouts through his blunt nostrils two columns of water, which, fiery-white in the centre, spray off into a fringe of blue beads. Strokes of blue line the black tarpaulin of his hide. Slushing the water through mouth and nostrils he sings, heavy with water, and the blue closes over him dowsing the polished pebbles of his eyes. Thrown upon the beach he lies, blunt, obtuse, shedding dry blue scales. Their metallic blue stains the rusty iron on the beach. Blue are the ribs of the wrecked rowing boat. A wave rolls beneath the blue bells. But the cathedral’s different, cold, incense laden, faint blue with the veils of madonnas.

VINCENT BERQUEZ: JOHN HOPKINS RIP

John Hopkins RIP

Hoppy loves Suzy Creamcheese, who drips Mary Quant filled eyes
and a silver skirt like a space girl.
They watch black and white films and her legs go all the way up
to the liquid sky filled pop dream in a shaky psychedelic shimmer.

Hoppy Hopkins loves his music and poetry from those Hippies
and flower filled scented freaks, the Jagger’s and the Ginsberg’s
dance for his monochrome photography and liquid light shows.

Suzy Creamcheese drops acid to the Pink Floyd at the UFO Club
every Friday night and Hoppy stands on a scaffold grooving the heavy sounds.
She knew Hendryx and Neil Young and the Lovin’ Spoonful, and all the guys.

In the year of Our Lord 1967AD 14 hours of Yoko and friends snipped a dress
off of a girl made of paper with blunt scissors.
The girl wore nothing underneath bar Biba knickers with a smile like a dream.
The naked truth, said the media was shocking but suffered no paper cuts.

The London sunrise blasted the zapped plastic 1960s
into the vinyl sickness of the plastic orange of the 1970s.
Hoppy Hopkins’s hash stash got him slammed in a HM prison,
and Susan Zeiger (aka Suzy Creamcheese) left the building.

TENTOONSTELLING IN SM AMSTERDAM OVER KUNSTBEWEGING ZERO: LET US EXPLORE THE STARS

Portret in dertig korte stukken Uitgefloten, toegejuicht: Michel Houellebecq laat niemand koud.

BERT BEVERS: OVERVLOED (TRANSLATION 4)

Bert_Bevers53

Overvloed

In de naslaap waad ik langzaam water
in.

“Dag papa. Waar ben je al die tijd?”

Bert Bevers

Overflow

In the after sleep I slowly wade into
the water. I never do. When dripping I
wonder what I am doing here, you resurrect.

With the young slender body which I know
from old pictures, serrated border and all,
yet with the head I so gently stroked

when you almost were on your last breath.
Remember? You smile. “What’s all this then?
You didn’t care about swimming at all,

boy?” you say. And you clasp me wet against
your chest so like mine. “Hey dad,” I say.
“Hi daddy. Where are you all the time?”

VACHEL LINDSAY: BLANCHE SWEET

 lindsdayV111

Vachel Lindsay
(1879-1931)

Blanche Sweet

Moving-picture Actress
(After seeing the reel called “Oil and Water”.)

Beauty has a throne-room
In our humorous town,
Spoiling its hob-goblins,
Laughing shadows down.
Rank musicians torture
Ragtime ballads vile,
But we walk serenely
Down the odorous aisle.
We forgive the squalor
And the boom and squeal
For the Great Queen flashes
From the moving reel.

Just a prim blonde stranger
In her early day,
Hiding brilliant weapons,
Too averse to play,
Then she burst upon us
Dancing through the night.
Oh, her maiden radiance,
Veils and roses white.
With new powers, yet cautious,
Not too smart or skilled,
That first flash of dancing
Wrought the thing she willed:—
Mobs of us made noble
By her strong desire,
By her white, uplifting,
Royal romance-fire.

Though the tin piano
Snarls its tango rude,
Though the chairs are shaky
And the dramas crude,
Solemn are her motions,
Stately are her wiles,
Filling oafs with wisdom,
Saving souls with smiles;
’Mid the restless actors
She is rich and slow.
She will stand like marble,
She will pause and glow,
Though the film is twitching,
Keep a peaceful reign,
Ruler of her passion,
Ruler of our pain!

ANDREW BARTON ‘BANJO’ PATERSON: A BALLAD OF DUCKS

BanjoPatterson22

Andrew Barton ‘Banjo’ Paterson
(1864 – 1941)

A Ballad of Ducks

The railway rattled and roared and swung
With jolting and bumping trucks.
The sun, like a billiard red ball, hung
In the Western sky: and the tireless tongue
Of the wild-eyed man in the corner told
This terrible tale of the days of old,
And the party that ought to have kept the ducks.

“Well, it ain’t all joy bein’ on the land
With an overdraft that’d knock you flat;
And the rabbits have pretty well took command;
But the hardest thing for a man to stand
Is the feller who says ‘Well I told you so!
You should ha’ done this way, don’t you know!’ —
I could lay a bait for a man like that.

“The grasshoppers struck us in ninety-one
And what they leave — well, it ain’t de luxe.
But a growlin’ fault-findin’ son of a gun
Who’d lent some money to stock our run —
I said they’d eaten what grass we had —
Says he, ‘Your management’s very bad;
You had a right to have kept some ducks!’

“To have kept some ducks! And the place was white!
Wherever you went you had to tread
On grasshoppers guzzlin’ day and night;
And then with a swoosh they rose in flight,
If you didn’t look out for yourself they’d fly
Like bullets into your open eye
And knock it out of the back of your head.

“There isn’t a turkey or goose or swan,
Or a duck that quacks, or a hen that clucks,
Can make a difference on a run
When a grasshopper plague has once begun;
‘If you’d finance us,’ I says, ‘I’d buy
Ten thousand emus and have a try;
The job,’ I says, ‘is too big for ducks!

“‘You must fetch a duck when you come to stay;
A great big duck — a Muscovy toff —
Ready and fit,’ I says, ‘for the fray;
And if the grasshoppers come our way
You turn your duck into the lucerne patch,
And I’d be ready to make a match
That the grasshoppers eat his feathers off!”

“He came to visit us by and by,
And it just so happened one day in spring
A kind of cloud came over the sky —
A wall of grasshoppers nine miles high,
And nine miles thick, and nine hundred wide,
Flyin’ in regiments, side by side,
And eatin’ up every living thing.

“All day long, like a shower of rain,
You’d hear ’em smackin’ against the wall,
Tap, tap, tap, on the window pane,
And they’d rise and jump at the house again
Till their crippled carcasses piled outside.
But what did it matter if thousands died —
A million wouldn’t be missed at all.

“We were drinkin’ grasshoppers — so to speak —
Till we skimmed their carcasses off the spring;
And they fell so thick in the station creek
They choked the waterholes all the week.
There was scarcely room for a trout to rise,
And they’d only take artificial flies —
They got so sick of the real thing.

“An Arctic snowstorm was beat to rags
When the hoppers rose for their morning flight
With the flapping noise like a million flags:
And the kitchen chimney was stuffed with bags
For they’d fall right into the fire, and fry
Till the cook sat down and began to cry —
And never a duck or fowl in sight.

“We strolled across to the railroad track —
Under a cover beneath some trucks,
I sees a feather and hears a quack;
I stoops and I pulls the tarpaulin back —
Every duck in the place was there,
No good to them was the open air.
‘Mister,’ I says, ‘There’s your blanky ducks!'”

ERNEST DOWSON: A REQUIEM

dowsonernest13

Ernest Dowson
(1867-1900)

A Requiem

Neobule, being tired,
Far too tired to laugh or weep,
From the hours, rosy and gray,
Hid her golden face away.
Neobule, fain of sleep,
Slept at last as she desired!

Neobule! is it well,
That you haunt the hollow lands,
Where the poor, dead people stray,
Ghostly, pitiful and gray,
Plucking, with their spectral hands,
Scentless blooms of asphodel?

Neobule, tired to death
Of the flowers that I threw
On her flower-like, fair feet,
Sighed for blossoms not so sweet,
Lunar roses pale and blue,
Lilies of the world beneath.

Neobule! ah, too tired
Of the dreams and days above!
Where the poor, dead people stray,
Ghostly, pitiful and gray,
Out of life and out of love,
Sleeps the sleep which she desired.
