In Franz Kafka.

Letterenhuis Antwerpen: Expo Velodroom. Fietsaffiches uit de belle époque

Expo Velodroom in Letterenhuis Antwerpen

Jong, oud, arm, rijk, man, vrouw. Iedereen gaat de fiets op. Fietsen is vrijheid.

Russian activist and artist, Yulia Tsvetkova, is facing six year sentence for drawing the female body

Russian activist and artist, Yulia Tsvetkova, is facing prosecution and harassment for defending women’s and LGBTI rights.

She has been under house arrest since 22 November, under absurd charges of “production and dissemination of pornography” for her drawings of the female body. She is facing up to six years in prison if convicted. Yulia Tsvetkova is a prisoner of conscience and must be immediately and unconditionally released.

Yulia Tsvetkova is an LGBTI and women’s rights activist, artist and stage director, from Komsomolsk-on-Amur, the Russian Far East.

She was detained on 20 November 2019 and put on house arrest two days later, after being charged with the “production and dissemination of pornographic materials”, for making body positive drawings of the female body and sharing them on social media.

Her drawings included pictures of female reproductive organs, and she shared them online as part of her women’s empowerment campaign.

On the day of her arrest, police searched Yulia’s apartment and the children’s educational club where she worked previously. The police seized her electronic devices, documents, and brochures on gender issues. Yulia later said that during the search police officers referred to her as a “lesbian, sex trainer and propagandist leader”.

Yulia has been the target of an overtly homophobic campaign since March 2019, when she was forced to leave Merak, the amateur youth theatre company she worked at, after police launched an investigation into alleged “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors”.

The investigation was launched in reaction to Yulia’s anti-bullying, anti-discrimination play, Blue and Pink.

On 11 December 2019 Yulia was found guilty of “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors”, and fined 50,000 rubles (approximately 600 GBP), for serving as the administrator of two LGBTI online communities on the popular Russian social media site, VKontakte.

Both of the online communities were properly marked as “18+”, as required by Russian law. Even under the confines of the homophobic Russian “gay propaganda” legislation, the “offence” should only be valid if the “propaganda” material is targeted at people under the age of 18.

On 17 January, Yulia informed the media that new proceedings had been opened against her, under the same Article of the Code of Administrative Offences that she had previously been charged under. This time she was being prosecuted for posting a drawing she made depicting two same-sex couples with child on social media, alongside the statement, “Family is where love is. Support LGBT+ families”.

She published the drawing in support of a same-sex couple who were forced to flee Russia with their adopted children after authorities threatened to remove their children from their custody.

Martin Rowson: Pastrami Faced Racist

Undeterred by the embarrassing success of his ridiculous four-volume verse epic The Limerickiad, award-winning cartoonist Martin Rowson continues to lower the tone with a series of metrical rants and cautionary tales about contemporary political and literary life.

Accompanied by the ghosts of Chesterton, Shelley, Burns and Browning, Rowson casts his gaze across the satirical spectrum from governments, gammon-faced racists, class war, nationalism and the harsh realities of child rearing to the world of literary festivals, international book fairs, best-sellers, book-launches, holiday reading lists, bottom lines, liggers, bloggers, blaggers, book-signings and book-burnings.

Martin Rowson is an award-winning cartoonist whose work appears regularly in The Guardian, The Independent on Sunday, The Daily Mirror, The Morning Star and many other publications.

His books include graphic adaptations of The Waste Land, Tristram Shandy and Gulliver’s Travels. Among his other books are Snatches, The Dog Allusion, Fuck, Stuff (long-listed for the Samuel Johnson Prize) and four volumes of The Limerickiad. His most recent book is The Communist Manifesto: A Graphic Novel.

R. Crumb’s Dream Diary

For more than 40 years, legendary American artist Robert Crumb has documented his nightly dreams in a meticulously kept private journal.

This material has stood as a guarded secret in a career defined by an impish compulsion to publically self-disclose. All of the artist’s well-documented preoccupations are present and accounted for—rampant egomania, insatiable lust, profound self-disgust, the sad beauty of old America, the moral bankruptcy of new America and the fool’s errand quest for spiritual enlightenment—but here they are entirely untamed, springing forth from forces beyond even his control.

Published for the first time, the complete Dream Diaries offer readers a deep, dark look under the hood of one of America’s most aggressively dynamic comedic voices.

Widely considered the greatest cartoonist of the 20th century, Robert Crumb (born 1943) drew comics from a very young age. After a brief career in greeting-card design in Cleveland, in 1965 the young artist discovered LSD, and headed for San Francisco, where he published Zap Comix 1, reinventing the comics medium. In 1994 he was the subject of an acclaimed documentary film by Terry Zwigoff. His adaptation of The Book of Genesis was published in 2009 and the original art for the project was exhibited internationally, most notably at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, in 2009, and as part of the 55th Venice Biennale in 2013. His most recent books include Bible of Filth, Art & Beauty Magazine and (with Aline Kominsky-Crumb) Drawn Together. Crumb lives and works in Southern France.

A fascinating glimpse into design behind the Iron Curtain, revealed through the products and graphics of everyday Soviet life

This captivating survey of Soviet design from 1950 to 1989 features more than 350 items from the Moscow Design Museum’s unique collection.

From children’s toys, homewares, and fashion to posters, electronics, and space-race ephemera, each object reveals something of life in a planned economy during a fascinating time in Russia’s history.

Organized into three chapters – Citizen, State, and World – the book is a micro-to-macro tour of the functional, kitsch, politicized, and often avant-garde designs from this largely undocumented period.
