In the early 1990s, eight people living in a small conservative Florida town alleged that Dr. David Acer, their dentist, infected them with HIV. David’s gayness, along with his sickly appearance from his own AIDS-related illness, made him the perfect scapegoat and victim of mob mentality.
In these early years of the AIDS epidemic, when transmission was little understood, and homophobia rampant, people like David were villainized. Accuser Kimberly Bergalis landed a People magazine cover story, while others went on talk shows and made front page news.
With a poet’s eulogistic and psychological intensity, Steven Reigns recovers the life and death of this man who also stands in for so many lives destroyed not only by HIV, but a diseased society that used stigma against the most vulnerable.
It’s impossible not to make connections between this story and how the twenty-first century pandemic has also been defined by medical misinformation and cultural bias.
Inspired by years of investigative research into the lives of David and those who denounced him, Reigns has stitched together a hauntingly poetic narrative that retraces an American history, questioning the fervor of his accusers, and recuperating a gay life previously shrouded in secrecy and shame.
Steven Reigns is a Los Angeles-based poet and educator and was appointed the first Poet Laureate of West Hollywood. Alongside over a dozen chapbooks, he has published the collections Inheritance and Your Dead Body is My Welcome Mat. Reigns holds a BA in Creative Writing from the University of South Florida, a Master of Clinical Psychology from Antioch University, and is a fourteen-time recipient of The Los Angeles County’s Department of Cultural Affairs’ Artist in Residency Grant. He edited My Life is Poetry, showcasing his students’ work from the first-ever autobiographical poetry workshop for LGBT seniors. Reigns has lectured and taught writing workshops around the country to LGBT youth and people living with HIV. Currently he is touring The Gay Rub, an exhibition of rubbings from LGBT landmarks, facilitates the monthly Lambda Lit Book Club, and is at work on a new collection of poetry.

In the late 1880s, a dashing young Italian aristocrat made an astonishing confession to the novelist Émile Zola.
In a series of revealing letters, he frankly described his sexual experiences with other men—including his seduction as a teenager by one of his father’s friends and his first love affair, with a sergeant during his military service—as well as his “extraordinary” personality.

William A. Peniston is the librarian and archivist emeritus at the Newark Museum of Art, as well as a historian of France. His books include Pederasts and Others: Urban Culture and Sexual Identity in Nineteenth-Century Paris (2004).
Nancy Erber is professor emerita of modern languages and literature at the City University of New York. With Peniston, she edited and translated Queer Lives: Men’s Autobiographies from Nineteenth-Century France (2007).

ROSIE STOCKTON: The contradiction posed in the title is one of the main questions I was writing through in this book. As you say, if the turn is “permanent,” it exists in motion, in a constant state of becoming. I was interested in constant becoming in relation to form. Usually sonnets only have one volta, followed by some semblance of resolution in the couplet. How could a “permanent volta” refuse this resolution? I might even distill this poetic question into a familiar political question around reform or revolution: what does change look like within a given structure vs. what does it look like to change that structure? Like so many poets since the 13th century, I took the sonnet as the structure I wanted to sabotage, slow down, hustle, edge, and flood as a way to ask this question.

Russian activist and artist, Yulia Tsvetkova, is facing prosecution and harassment for defending women’s and LGBTI rights.
She has been under house arrest since 22 November, under absurd charges of “production and dissemination of pornography” for her drawings of the female body. She is facing up to six years in prison if convicted. Yulia Tsvetkova is a prisoner of conscience and must be immediately and unconditionally released.
Yulia Tsvetkova is an LGBTI and women’s rights activist, artist and stage director, from Komsomolsk-on-Amur, the Russian Far East.
She was detained on 20 November 2019 and put on house arrest two days later, after being charged with the “production and dissemination of pornographic materials”, for making body positive drawings of the female body and sharing them on social media.
Her drawings included pictures of female reproductive organs, and she shared them online as part of her women’s empowerment campaign.
On the day of her arrest, police searched Yulia’s apartment and the children’s educational club where she worked previously. The police seized her electronic devices, documents, and brochures on gender issues. Yulia later said that during the search police officers referred to her as a “lesbian, sex trainer and propagandist leader”.
Yulia has been the target of an overtly homophobic campaign since March 2019, when she was forced to leave Merak, the amateur youth theatre company she worked at, after police launched an investigation into alleged “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors”.
The investigation was launched in reaction to Yulia’s anti-bullying, anti-discrimination play, Blue and Pink.
On 11 December 2019 Yulia was found guilty of “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors”, and fined 50,000 rubles (approximately 600 GBP), for serving as the administrator of two LGBTI online communities on the popular Russian social media site, VKontakte.
Both of the online communities were properly marked as “18+”, as required by Russian law. Even under the confines of the homophobic Russian “gay propaganda” legislation, the “offence” should only be valid if the “propaganda” material is targeted at people under the age of 18.
On 17 January, Yulia informed the media that new proceedings had been opened against her, under the same Article of the Code of Administrative Offences that she had previously been charged under. This time she was being prosecuted for posting a drawing she made depicting two same-sex couples with child on social media, alongside the statement, “Family is where love is. Support LGBT+ families”.
She published the drawing in support of a same-sex couple who were forced to flee Russia with their adopted children after authorities threatened to remove their children from their custody.

De tentoonstelling Jean Cocteau – Metamorphosis toont vele van deze gezichten, in tekeningen en schilderijen, wandtapijten en affiches, in foto en film. Een veelheid aan artistieke uitingsvormen die Cocteau alle als een zelfportret beschouwde
Al sinds de jaren negentig bevinden zich keramiek en sieraden van Cocteau in de collectie van het Design Museum Den Bosch.
Het werk van Jean Cocteau wijst vooruit naar de multidisciplinaire praktijk van ontwerpers en kunstenaars vvan vandaag. In onze tijd beperken Nederlandse ontwerpers als Bart Hess, Ted Noten en Studio Drift zich al evenmin tot één discipline maar verkennen de grenzen van kunst, design en digitale media.
De overzichtstentoonstelling Jean Cocteau – Metamorphosis bestaat uit meer dan 250 werken.
Vele belangrijke bruiklenen zijn verschaft door het Musée Jean Cocteau collection Séverin Wunderman uit Menton, Frankrijk, het enige aan Cocteau gewijde museum ter wereld, en door de verzameling Kontaxopoulos | Prokopchuk te Brussel, de grootste internationale privéverzameling van het werk van Cocteau.
Daarnaast zijn er bruiklenen van o.m. Collection Cartier, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam en de Koninklijke Verzamelingen.
Belangrijke werken uit de bruiklenen zijn o.a. het wandkleed Judith et Holoferne uit Menton, het kunstenaarsboek Le Mystère de Jean l’Oiseleur uit Brussel, het zwaard Epée d’Académicien van Collection Cartier en het manuscript-gedicht Hommage à Igor Strawinsky uit de Koninklijke Verzamelingen, door president Mitterrand geschonken aan prins Claus tijdens een staatsbezoek in Parijs.
Documentaire: Nicolas Patrzynski (www.patrzynski.com) heeft een documentaire gemaakt van Jean Cocteau. Het leven en werk van Cocteau vloeien in dit werk prachtig in elkaar over. De documentaire maakt onderdeel uit van de tentoonstelling.
De tentoonstelling wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door Mondriaan Fonds, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds en Turing Foundation.

Johan Bertus Wouter Polak (1928-1992) was een legendarische en extravagante uitgever, essayist, bibliofiel, vertaler en mecenas.
Hij groeide op in ‘een zeer liberaal joods milieu met sterk atheïstische en sociaaldemocratische inslag’. Dit ogenschijnlijk idyllische bestaan werd bruut verstoord door de vroege dood van Johans vader en de Duitse bezetting vlak daarna. Deze ingrijpende gebeurtenissen en de verhouding met zijn moeder bepaalden voor een groot deel Polaks verdere leven.
De drama’s uit zijn jeugd worden door Hilberdink in verband gebracht met de oprichting van uitgeverij Polak & Van Gennep in 1962. Hij gaf op fraaie wijze het werk uit van onder anderen P.C. Boutens, J.H. Leopold, Herman Gorter en J.C. Bloem. En dat van Gerard Reve, die hij van alle naoorlogse auteurs het meest bewonderde en met wie hij een uiterst complexe verhouding kreeg.
Daarnaast begon Polak in 1966 de al even vermaarde Athenaeum Boekhandel op het Spui in Amsterdam. Het werd een centrum van activiteiten, zowel politiek als literair, en Johan werd een bekende Amsterdammer.
Uitvoerig komt ook Polaks rol aan de orde in de emancipatie van homoseksuelen en de strijd tegen het antisemitisme.
Zijn persoonlijke seksuele bevrijding wordt openlijk beschreven. Johans emancipatiestrijd was verbonden met de strijd tegen het antisemitisme. Hij schreef: ‘Er is in homosexuelen een hypersensitiviteit voor taal en schoonheid aanwezig, juist nu. De kans bestaat dat zij instinctief reeds voelen, zoals de Joden voorheen, dat zij getekend zijn en reeds op het punt staan als verworpenen te worden uitgeroeid. Ik ben op dat punt pessimistisch en zie allerlei onrustbarende tekenen.’

Zonder verschillen kunnen we alles
stilzwijgend ondergaan.
Dan gaan de lichten op de dimstand.
De grootste beren op de Roze rots,
Komrij’s Paralymics.
Het anders-zijn wordt juist benadrukt?
Met z’n allen in een draaimolen,
de carrousel.
Alle plaatjes van mensen in de centrifuge
tot oliebolsap.
Allemaal hetzelfde,
behalve op Roze maandag.
Nog een Keer Keer KEER Keer.
Online bashen, inmaken oprotten optiefen onder de lakens houden, achter de voordeur. “Mij maakt het niet uit hoor,” als ze maar niet ehm zoenen op straat, ehm handen vasthouden, ehm genegenheid tonen, ehm mij aankijken, ehm iets roze-achtigs doen, ehm of denken, ehm ademen, of ehm leven.

Het evenement ‘Roze Maandag’ maakt onderdeel uit van de Tilburgse Kermis, juli 2012. Het gedicht ‘Bloemlezen en Koffiedik kijken op de Roze Maandag’ werd eerder gepubliceerd in het Brabants Dagblad.
