Many Rivers to Cross by Richard Long

A comprehensive overview of Richard Long’s career, selected by the artist himself and encompassing his artworks from the 1960s to today.

Richard Long has been at the forefront of land art for more than half a century. A pioneer of conceptual practices in the 1960s, Long takes sculpture out of the studio into nature and around the world, using time, space, distance, navigation, perception, the elements, and the geological forces that have shaped the landscape as both his tools and his vocabulary.

Many Rivers to Cross is a personal overview of Richard Long’s career, including works selected by the artist and spanning the late 1960s to the present day. It covers his practice in all its forms: walks, photographs, text works, large installations, mud works, and drawings, including some early unpublished works as well as many seminal and celebrated projects.

A number of short backstories written by Long not only provide insight into the context and making of key works, but also evoke the sense of freedom and adventure of an epic journey across foreign landscapes. Texts include a recent conversation between Long and internationally acclaimed composer and musician Nitin Sawhney; a dialogue about the recreation of Muddy Water Circle at Frieze Masters in London with Lisson Gallery; and a discussion with curator Alkistis Dimaki on the occasion of the presentation of Athens Slate Line at the Acropolis, Athens. The book also includes documentation of works presented internationally in museums and galleries.

Sir Richard Long, CBE, is one of Britain’s foremost sculptors and land artists. Short-listed four times for the Turner Prize, he won the award in 1989 for White Water Line. He was elected to the Royal Academy of Arts in 2001 and for more than fifty years his work has been exhibited at major galleries throughout the world. Richard Long lives and works in Bristol, the city in which he was born.

Nu in Museum De Pont Tilburg te zien: Richard Long

Wood Circle blijft in Van Abbe Museum EindhovenCrowdfunding initiatief voor kunstwerk Richard Long geslaagd

For Eindhoven’ – The City as Muse.

Crowdfunding initiatief voor Richard Long’s kunstwerk t/m 31/10/2011

For Eindhoven’ – The City as Muse.

Nationalgalerie Hamburger Bahnhof Berlin: Richard Long. Berlin Circle

Nationalgalerie Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin

Richard Long. Berlin Circle

until 31 July 2011

The first solo show in Germany of works by the artist to be held in a major museum in almost ten years. The focus and inspiration for this exhibition is formed by the eponymous work ‘Berlin Circle’, dating from 1996, which features in the Sammlung Marx.

‘My art is in the nature of things’,  Richard Long

A new work by the artist, the ‘River Avon Mud Circle’, will also be specially created for the show in the museum.  This exhibition also pays tribute to the long-term commitment to the Nationalgalerie at Hamburger Bahnhof on the part of the collector Erich Marx, who will be celebrating his 90th birthday this spring.

Richard Long (*1945, Bristol, England) is one of the leading protagonists of ‘Land Art’, along with Michael Heizer, Walter de Maria and Robert Smithson. Coinciding with the first ecological movements in the USA and Europe, Land Art was first created in the 1960s by artists working concurrently but separately from each other, as a critical reaction to the classical genre of sculpture and the commercial art market. The transient and site-specific works, hewn in and from nature, were first unveiled to the public in 1968 in the ‘Earthworks’ exhibition at the Dwan Gallery in New York. A year later, in 1969, Gerry Schum coined the term ‘Land Art’ in his television programme of the same name, and it has been used ever since.

Richard Long uses the movement of his own body, the act of rambling and walking in the countryside as both the gauge and medium for his art. One of his earliest and most well-known works, ‘A Line Made by Walking’, from 1967, consisted in him pacing up and down a field in a straight line so often that a line was drawn in the grass, which the artist then captured on film in the form of a photograph. For over 40 years now, subsequent larger works have been created outdoors all over the world, in England, Canada, Japan and Bolivia: composed of large stone circles or lines made of wood. These temporary works are then documented in photographs. In contrast to such companions of his as Heizer and Smithson, Long’s works do not amount to an intervention in nature, executed in a series of great gestures, for he instead works with material already at hand.

Since he started out as an artist, Long has, however, also shown works in interior spaces. Here too, sculptures are created with archetypal forms of wood or stone: ovals, lines or circles. Long explains his choice of form as follows: ‘I  like to use the symmetry of patterns between time, between places and time, between distance and time, between stones and distance, between time and stones. I choose lines and circles because they do the job.’

It is befitting then that the main work in the Hamburger Bahnhof exhibition, ‘Berlin Circle’, is a circle of stone, twelve metres in diameter, laid out on the floor. ‘Berlin Circle’ is an important work in the Sammlung Marx and was first unveiled and installed by the artist for the opening of the Hamburger Bahnhof in 1996. It serves as a thematic focal point in today’s exhibition, emphasising one of the artist’s core forms: the circle. Five other floor pieces are also on display in the historical hall, along with films by and on the artist.

‘My art is in the nature of things’ says Long, referring to the topicality of his works. By being consistently set in places where the nature of things appears in the works, they also throw light on questions in today’s discourse on the relationality, performativeness, transgressions and spatiality of art.

Nationalgalerie Hamburger Bahnhof – Museum für Gegenwart – Berlin

Sammlungspräsentation zum Thema

Land Art

Richard Long: Heaven and Earth in Tate London

RICHARD LONG

HEAVEN AND EARTH

Tate Britain London

3 June – 6 September 2009

Heaven and Earth is a major exhibition of the work of Richard Long and his first survey in London for eighteen years. The exhibition will include important works selected across four decades and will provide an opportunity to understand afresh Long’s radical rethinking of the relationship between art and landscape. Comprising around 80 works, Heaven and Earth will include sculptures, new large-scale wall works, and photographic and text works documenting walks around the world, from Dartmoor to Japan.

Richard Long first came to prominence in the late 1960s and is part of a generation of British artists who extended the possibilities of sculpture beyond traditional materials and methods. Long’s work is rooted in his deep affinity with nature, developed during solitary walks. Long revolutionised the definition of sculpture by using walking as a medium. These walks take him through rural areas in Britain, or as far a field as the plains of Canada, Mongolia and Bolivia. Long never makes significant alterations to the landscapes he passes through. Instead he adjusts the natural order of wilderness places, up-ending stones for example, or making simple, geometric shapes. His work explores relationships between time, distance, geography, measurement and movement.

Heaven and Earth will reflect the distinctive themes and interests in his work; sculptures of stones, watery mud works, and photographic and text works which record walks in global locations, or from a local area of life-long interest like Dartmoor. Long presents his work in various forms, which include artists’ books and postcards, all of which are ascribed equal value. The exhibition will include key early works such as A Line Made by Walking, England 1967, made in a field where the artist walked back and forth until the flattened grass caught by the sunlight became visible as a line, a path going ‘nowhere’. Long then photographed this work, as he has continued to record similar works in the landscape.

Mostly working in the landscape, Richard Long sometimes brings materials into the gallery. Four of Long’s dramatic mud works, which represent the forces of speed, water, chance and gravity will be made directly on to the walls for the show.  The large central gallery of the exhibition will be devoted to six major stone sculptures. Norfolk Flint Circle 1990 is an eight metre sculpture consisting of a single layer of flints lying close together on the floor. In the gallery, as on his walks, Long lays the stones in simple geometric configurations such as circles, lines, and ellipses. The exhibition will also include early examples of remote stone sculptures such as the first stone circle made while walking in the Andes in 1972.

Richard Long was born in Bristol in 1945 where he continues to live and work. Long has exhibited widely since his first solo show at the Konrad Fischer Gallery in Düsseldorf in 1968. He represented Britain in the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 1976 and was awarded the Turner Prize in 1989. In 1990 he became a Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Heaven and Earth is curated by Clarrie Wallis, Curator of Contemporary Art, Tate Britain, assisted by Helen Little, Assistant Curator, Tate Britain. A fully illustrated publication produced by Tate Publishing will accompany the exhibition and will include previously unseen works.
