Charles Bukowski was born in Andernach, Germany on August 16, 1920, the only child of an American soldier and a German mother. At the age of three, he came with his family to the United States and grew up in Los Angeles. He attended Los Angeles City College from 1939 to 1941, then left school and moved to New York City to become a writer. His lack of publishing success at this time caused him to give up writing in 1946 and spurred a ten-year stint of heavy drinking. After he developed a bleeding ulcer, he decided to take up writing again. He worked a wide range of jobs to support his writing, including dishwasher, truck driver and loader, mail carrier, guard, gas station attendant, stock boy, warehouse worker, shipping clerk, post office clerk, parking lot attendant, Red Cross orderly, and elevator operator. He also worked in a dog biscuit factory, a slaughterhouse, a cake and cookie factory, and he hung posters in New York City subways.
Bukowski published his first story when he was twenty-four and began writing poetry at the age of thirty-five. His first book of poetry was published in 1959; he went on to publish more than forty-five books of poetry and prose, including Pulp (Black Sparrow, 1994), Screams from the Balcony: Selected Letters 1960-1970 (1993), and The Last Night of the Earth Poems (1992), and the following books with City Lights Publishers: Notes of a Dirty Old Man (1981), The Most Beautiful Woman in Town & Other Stories (1983), Tales of Ordinary Madness (1984), Portions from a Wine-Stained Notebook: Uncollected Stories and Essays, 1944-1990 (2008), Absence of the Hero: Uncollected Stories and Essays, Vol. 2: 1946-1992 (2010), More Notes of a Dirty Old Man: The Uncollected Columns (2011), and The Bell Tolls for No One (2015). He died of leukemia in San Pedro on March 9, 1994.

He was the leading light of the Beat Generation writers and the most dynamic author of his time, but Jack Kerouac also had a lifelong passion for music, particularly the mid-century jazz of New York City, the development of which he witnessed first-hand during the 1940s with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk to the fore.
The novelist, most famous for his 1957 book On the Road, admired the sounds of bebop and attempted to bring something of their original energy to his own writing, a torrent of semi-autobiographical stories he published between 1950 and his early death in 1969.
Yet he was also drawn to American popular music of all kinds – from the blues to Broadway ballads – and when he came to record albums under his own name, he married his unique spoken word style with some of the most talented musicians on the scene.

Simon Warner
is a journalist, lecturer and broadcaster who teaches Popular Music Studies at the University of Leeds in the UK. He has, over a number of years, written live reviews and counterculture obituaries for The Guardian and The Independent, and has a particular interest in the relationship between the Beat Generation writers–Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg, William Burroughs and others–and rock culture. ‘En toch is alles wat we doen natuur’ bevat de mooiste natuurgedichten van dichter-tekenaar-bioloog Leo Vroman.
Vroman was gefascineerd door het leven in en rondom ons, dat hij tot in de wonderbaarlijkste details observeerde en beschreef.
Tientallen bundels speelse poëzie schreef hij, een onuitputtelijke stroom gedichten van 1946 tot 2014, het jaar van zijn overlijden.
Mirjam van Hengel (auteur van het succesvolle Hoe mooi alles, over Leo en Tineke Vroman) maakte een nieuwe, ruime selectie uit de gedichten die Vroman schreef over de natuur – die van mensen, die van gras, bloemen en bomen, van orkanen en organen en van alle mogelijke dieren.
Leo Vroman (1915-2014) was dichter, prozaïst, essayist, illustrator en hematoloog. Hij studeerde biologie in Utrecht en vluchtte in 1940 naar Nederlands-Indië. In 1945 werd hij uit Japanse gevangenschap bevrijd en vestigde zich in Verenigde Staten, samen met zijn vrouw Tineke. Vroman debuteerde in 1946 met de bundel Gedichten. Vroman ontving in de loop van zijn leven zowat alle belangrijke literaire prijzen die er zijn. In 2006 verscheen het dagboek Misschien tot morgen.

Le dimanche qui suivit, différents signes annoncèrent que quelque chose allait se produire.
Ce fut déjà et cela dès l’aube une chaleur oppressante, sans brise aucune. L’air semblait s’être solidifié autour de l’île, dans une transparence compacte et gélatineuse qui déformait ça et là l’horizon quand il ne l’effaçait pas : l’île flottait au milieu de nulle part. Le Brau luisait de reflets de meringue.
Les laves noires à nu en haut des vignes et des vergers frémissaient comme si soudain elles redevenaient liquides. Les maisons très vite se trouvèrent gorgées d’une haleine éreintante qui épuisa les corps comme les esprits.
On ne pouvait y jouir d’aucune fraîcheur.
Puis il y eut une odeur, presque imperceptible au début, à propos de laquelle on aurait pu se dire qu’on l’avait rêvée, ou qu’elle émanait des êtres, de leur peau, de leur bouche, de leurs vêtements ou de leurs intérieurs. Mais d’heure en heure l’odeur s’affirma. Elle s’installa d’une façon discrète, pour tout dire clandestine. »
Écrivain traduit dans le monde entier, Philippe Claudel est aussi cinéaste et dramaturge. Il a notamment publié aux éditions Stock Les Âmes grises, La Petite Fille de Monsieur Linh, Le Rapport de Brodeck et L’Arbre du pays Toraja. Membre de l’académie Goncourt, il réside en Lorraine où il est né en 1962.

Liu Xia, China, is a poet, artist, and founding member of the Independent Chinese PEN Centre. Xia has been held under unofficial house arrest in her Beijing apartment since her late husband, the poet Liu Xiaobo, was named the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in October 2010.
For seven years, Liu Xia (1961) was held in her apartment without access to phones, internet, doctors of her choice, or visitors. Following the death of her husband in July 2017 and the expression of concern for her wellbeing, Xia appeared in a video in which she asked to be left alone to mourn – it is thought that she may have done this at the behest of the authorities.
The Independent PEN Centre (ICPC) report that the restrictions applied against Liu Xia have relaxed somewhat; she has access to a telephone and is allowed to leave her home, but is under constant surveillance. Colleagues at ICPC report that Liu Xia has been removed from Beijing for the duration of the National People’s Congress; it is expected that she will be returned to her Beijing home after this date.
There are reports that Liu Xia’s mental and physical health continue to suffer due to her detention.
PEN International believes that the ongoing, extra-judicial house arrest of Liu Xia is a form of punishment for the human rights work carried out by her husband, Liu Xiaobo, and is extremely concerned for her physical and psychological integrity.

W is de hoofdpersoon in de gedichten van De jongenskamer die samen één verhalend gedicht vormen.
Het begint in de jaren voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog en eindigt in de onherkenbaar veranderde wereld van nu – maar wel met een liefdesgedicht.
De kamer achter de werkplaats van W’s vader, een kleermaker, is de plek waar onder invloed van de tijd en de geschiedenis de eerste ideeën van W en zijn broers ontstaan over liefde, vriendschap, kunst en sport – én over de politieke en sociale werkelijkheid en de rol die het individu daarin kan spelen.

“Bukowski’s The Bell Tolls for No One, recently released in a comic-book-like paperback, follows the hardboiled genre bent that reached its surreal apotheosis in his final novel, Pulp. The obvious influence is to Hemingway—see: the title—but perhaps more interestingly, the editor David Stephen Calonne notes Bukowski’s debt to the crime writer James M. Cain, who had also, unbeknownst to me, shaped the style of Camus’s The Stranger. The book includes some of Bukowski’s roughly drawn illustrations, which fall somewhere close to pornographic Ziggy or adult-themed New Yorker cartoons. One features an asthmatic customer at an adult bookstore asking the cashier to inflate his blow-up doll for him; another shows an expressionistically drawn party girl surrounded by gawking men with the caption “God, a woman could get bored.” The subject matter is a more amplified version of the usual Bukowski fare—stalwart, sleazebag protagonists; spectral, deathly women with emphatically described upper legs. As always, the most one can hope for in Bukowski’s universe is “a grim yet comfortable isolation.”—Casey Henry in The Paris Review
“He had a good wife. I remember one time they cleaned
up my face with cotton and some kind of sterilizer when
it was all smashed-in from a bad night out. They seemed
very tender and concerned and serious about my smashed-
in face, and it was a very odd feeling to me, that care.
Anyhow, the drinking got to Mick, and it gets to each
of us differently. With him, the body swelled up, doubled,
tripled in size in various places. He couldn’t zip his pants
and had to cut slits in the pant legs. His story was that they
didn’t have a bed for him in the vet’s hospital. My feeling
was that he didn’t want to go there. Anyhow, one day he
made a foolish move and tried the General Hospital.
After a couple of days he phoned me. “Jesus Christ,
they’re killing me! I’ve never seen a place like this. No doc-
tors anywhere and nurses don’t give a damn and just these
fruit orderlies running around like snobs and happy that
everybody’s sick and dying. What the fuck is this place?

E. du Perronprijs
De E. du Perronprijs is een initiatief van de gemeente Tilburg, de School of Humanities and Digital Sciences van Tilburg University en brabants kenniscentrum voor kunst en cultuur (bkkc). De prijs is bedoeld voor personen of instellingen die, net als Du Perron in zijn tijd, grenzen signaleren en doorbreken die wederzijds begrip tussen verschillende bevolkingsgroepen in de weg staan. De prijs bestaat uit een geldbedrag van €2500 euro en een textiel object, ontworpen door studio ‘by aaaa’ (Moyra Besjes en Natasja Lauwers) en vervaardigd bij het TextielMuseum in Tilburg. Vorig jaar won Stefan Hertmans de prijs voor zijn roman De Bekeerlinge. Andere laureaten waren onder meer Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer (2015), Mohammed Benzakour (2013), Koen Peeters (2012), Ramsey Nasr (2011) en Alice Boot & Rob Woortman (2010).

De E. du Perronprijs 2017 wordt op woensdagavond 18 april 2018 uitgereikt tijdens de avond dat ook de E. du Perronlezing wordt gehouden bij het brabants kenniscentrum voor kunst en cultuur (bkkc) aan de Spoorlaan 21 i-k. De Amsterdamse schrijver en dichter F.Starik (pseudoniem van Frank von der Möhlen) is vorige week vrijdag (16 maart 2018) overleden aan een hartstilstand. Hij was 59 jaar oud.
Starik schreef tien dichtbundels en was een van de dichters die bij toerbeurt in Amsterdam een speciaal geschreven gedicht voorlazen bij de uitvaart van eenzaam gestorven mensen.
Hij trad regelmatig op, op festivals als Oerol en Lowlands en literaire evenementen als De Nacht van de Poëzie en Crossing Border. Afgelopen zondag was zijn laatste optreden, op het internationale dichtersfestival StAnza, in Schotland.
F. Starik was stadsdichter van Amsterdam van 2010 tot 2012. Bij zijn afscheid als stadsdichter ontving hij van burgemeester Van der Laan het Ereteken van Verdienste.

49e Poetry International Festival Rotterdam
Het jaarlijkse feest van de internationale poëzie
Op dinsdag 29 mei opent het 49e Poetry International Festival in Theater Rotterdam. Tot en met zondag 3 juni hoor je voor de 49e keer de mooiste gedichten uit alle windstreken en in vele talen, eerst in de Schouwburg, aansluitend in en om Locatie Witte de With.
Naast poëzievoordrachten brengt het festival films, muziek, interviews, lezingen, themabijeenkomsten en masterclasses. Een kermis van verlangen, kritiek, avontuur en troost, met de kunst van het woord als brandstof. Iedereen is uitgenodigd op het jaarlijkse feest van de poëzie.
Kom alvast in de stemming en vertaal zelf de poëzie van de festivaldichters tijdens het vertaalproject Met Andere Woorden. Vanaf 1 maart staan de eerste gedichten online. Kies je favoriete taal en dichter en ga aan de slag (zie verder de website van p.i.).
