Last evening the T. S. Eliot Prize 2021 – Shortlist was announced.
It shows an eclectic mixture of established poets, none of whom has previously won the Prize, and relative newcomers.
Judges Glyn Maxwell (Chair), Caroline Bird and Zaffar Kunial have chosen the 2021 T. S. Eliot Prize shortlist from a record 177 poetry collections submitted by British and Irish publishers.
The list comprises one debut collection; work from six men and four women; one American; one poet from Ireland; as well as poets of mixed race ancestry, including Jamaican, Jamaican-Chinese and Zambian. Eight publishers are represented, with two titles from small presses.
Here are the ten poets who have been shortlisted by the judges:
Raymond Antrobus – All the Names Given (Picador)
Raymond Antrobus is the author of To Sweeten Bitter and The Perseverance (Penned in the Margins/Tin House) and All the Names Given (Picador 2021). In 2019 he became the first ever poet to be awarded the Rathbone Folio Prize. Other accolades include the Ted Hughes Award, PBS Winter Choice and Sunday Times Young Writer of the year award, as well as being shortlisted for the Griffin Prize and Forward Prize.
Kayo Chingonyi – A Blood Condition (Chatto & Windus)
Kayo Chingonyi is the author of two pamphlets. His first full-length collection, Kumukanda, (Chatto & Windus 2012) won the Dylan Thomas Prize and a Somerset Maugham Award and was shortlisted for the Costa Poetry Prize and the Seamus Heaney Centre First Poetry Collection Prize. His most recent collection is A Blood Condition (Chatto & Windus 2021).
Victoria Kennefick – Eat Or We Both Starve (Carcanet)
Victoria Kennefick’s pamphlet, White Whale (Southword Editions, 2015), won the Munster Literature Centre Fool for Poetry Chapbook Competition and the Saboteur Award for Best Poetry Pamphlet. Her work has appeared in Poetry, The Poetry Review, PN Review, Poetry Ireland Review, The Irish Times, Ambit and elsewhere. Her debut collection Eat Or We Both Starve was published by Carcanet in 2021.
Selima Hill – Men Who Feed Pigeons (Bloodaxe)
Selima Hill is a prodigiously prolific poet, who has produced nineteen books of poetry, all published by Bloodaxe. Her 1997 collection, Violet, was shortlisted for the Forward Poetry Prize, the T. S. Eliot Prize and the Whitbread Poetry Award. Bunny (2001), won the Whitbread Poetry Award, was a Poetry Book Society Choice and was shortlisted for the T. S. Eliot Prize. Her new collection is Men Who Feed Pigeons (Bloodaxe 2021).
Hannah Lowe – The Kids (Bloodaxe)
Hannah Lowe’s first poetry collection Chick (Bloodaxe 2013) won the Michael Murphy Memorial Award for Best First Collection, was shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection and the Seamus Heaney Centre Prize for Poetry, and was selected for the Poetry Book Society’s Next Generation Poets 2014 promotion. Her second collection was Chan and her third collection, The Kids, (Bloodaxe 2021) was a Poetry Book Society Choice.
Michael Symmons Roberts – Ransom (Cape Poetry)
Michael Symmons Roberts’s eight poetry collections have all been published by Cape and include Corpus, which was the winner of the 2004 Whitbread Poetry Award, and was shortlisted for the T. S. Eliot Prize, the Forward Prize and the Griffin International Prize. Drysalter was the winner of the 2013 Forward Prize and the Costa Poetry Prize and was shortlisted for the T. S. Eliot Prize. His eighth poetry collection is Ransom (Cape Poetry, 2021).
Daniel Sluman – single window (Nine Arches Press)
Daniel Sluman co-edited the first major UK Disability poetry anthology, Stairs and Whispers: D/deaf and Disabled Poets Write Back, (2017) with Sandra Alland and Khairani Barokka. He has previously published two poetry collections, Absence has a weight of its own (2012) and the terrible (2015), both Nine Arches Press. His third poetry collection, single window, was published in 2021 by Nine Arches Press.
Joelle Taylor – C+nto & Othered Poems (The Westbourne Press)
Joelle Taylor has published four collections of poetry: Ska Tissue (2011, Mother Foucault Press), The Woman Who Was Not There (2014, Burning Eye Books) and Songs My Enemy Taught Me (2017, Out-Spoken Press). She founded SLAMbassadors for the Poetry Society in 2001 and is the host of London’s premier night of poetry and music Out-Spoken. C+not & Othered Poems was published in 2021 by The Westbourne Press.
Jack Underwood – A Year in the New Life (Faber)
Jack Underwood was a winner of the Eric Gregory Award in 2007 and his debut pamphlet was published by Faber as part of the first Faber New Poets series in 2009. His debut poetry collection, Happiness (Faber, 2015), won the Somerset Maugham Award. He is a senior lecturer in English and Creative Writing at Goldsmiths College, University of London. His second collection, A Year in the New Life, was published by Faber in 2021.
Kevin Young – Stones (Cape Poetry)
Kevin Young is the author of fifteen books of poetry and prose, including Brown; Blue Laws: Selected & Uncollected Poems 1995-2015; Book of Hours, Jelly Roll: a blues, Bunk and The Grey Album. He is the Andrew W. Mellon Director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture and the poetry editor of the New Yorker. Stones (Cape 2021) is the first of his poetry collections to be published in the UK.
The T. S. Eliot Prize is run by the T. S. Eliot Foundation. The T. S. Eliot Prize is the most valuable prize in British poetry – the winning poet will receive a cheque for £25,000 and the shortlisted poets will be presented with cheques for £1,500. It is the only major poetry prize which is judged purely by established poets. The 2021 judging panel are looking for the best new poetry collection written in English and published in 2021 in the UK or Ireland.

We are delighted with our shortlist, while lamenting all the fine work we had to set aside. Poetry styles are as disparate as I’ve ever known them, and the wider world as threatened and bewildered as any of us can remember. Out of this we have chosen ten books that sound clear and compelling voices – of the moment, yet also below and beyond it. Older and younger, wiser and wilder, well-known and lesser-known, these are the ten voices we think should enter the stage and be heard in the spotlight, changing the story while there’s a story to be changed.’
The T. S. Eliot Prize Shortlist Readings will take place on Sunday 9th January 2022 in the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in London as part of its literature programme. The shortlist readings are the largest annual poetry event in the UK and will be hosted once again by Ian McMillan.

The winner of the 2021 Prize will be announced at the Award Ceremony on Monday 10th January 2022, where the winner and the shortlisted poets will be presented with their cheques.
Last year’s winner was Bhanu Kapil’s How to Wash a Heart and the judges were Lavinia Greenlaw (chair), Mona Arshi and Andrew McMillan.
The T. S. Eliot Prize, which former Poet Laureate Andrew Motion has described as “the Prize most poets want to win”, is an annual prize for the best new poetry collection published in the UK or Ireland.

In a series of dramatic set pieces, we watch as she navigates the writer’s self-destructive binges in the casinos of Europe—even hazarding an audacious turn at roulette herself—until his addiction is conquered. And, finally, we watch as Anna frees her husband from predatory contracts by founding her own publishing house, making Anna the first solo female publisher in Russian history.
The result is a story that challenges ideas of empowerment, sacrifice, and female agency in nineteenth-century Russia—and a welcome new appraisal of an indomitable woman whose legacy has been nearly lost to literary history.
Andrew D. Kaufman is an associate professor, General Faculty, lecturer in Slavic Languages and Literatures, and assistant director of the Center for Teaching Excellence at the University of Virginia. A PhD in Slavic languages and literatures from Stanford University, Kaufman is the author of Give War and Peace a Chance: Tolstoyan Wisdom for Troubled Times and Understanding Tolstoy, and a coauthor of Russian for Dummies. His work has been featured on Today, NPR, and PBS, and in The Washington Post, and he has served as a Russian literature expert for Oprah’s Book Club. Kaufman is the creator of Books Behind Bars, introducing incarcerated youth to the writings of Dostoyevsky and other authors.

Een groep vrouwelijke kunstenaars onder de naam ‘Guerrilla Girls’ voert al decennia actie tegen de ondervertegenwoordiging van vrouwen in de grote musea van de Verenigde Staten, ook in onze dependance in New York, het ‘Metropolitan Museum of Art’. Hun telling: minder dan 5% exposerende vrouwen, terwijl het tentoongestelde naakt voor 85% vrouwelijk was.
Oef! Dit gaf te denken. Daar moest wat aan te doen zijn. Waarom niet omkeren? Vandaar deze expositie van alléén vrouwen met alléén mannelijk naakt. Ook dat mag gezien worden.

De elfde editie van Lustwarande, STATIONS, die terugblikt op twintig jaar expositiepraktijk in De Oude Warande, is nog drie weken te zien (tot 3 oktober 2021).
Museumtijdschrift afgelopen week over STATIONS:
“De installatie (van Navid Nuur (red.)) laat dan ook de kracht zien van Lustwarande, die dit jaar geen overkoepelend thema kent: door gebruik te maken van de natuurlijke omgeving komt het werk van iedere kunstenaar telkens even verrassend, maar treffend tot zijn recht.”
LUSTWARANDE 2021 – STATIONS
STATIONS verwijst naar het moment dat de kunstenaars deelnamen aan Lustwarande in het begin van hun loopbaan, of juist later, op diverse tijdstippen in een spanne van twintig jaar, soms herhaaldelijk – en de huidige fase in hun carrière, nu ze allen midcareer en established zijn. Tegelijk verwijst de titel naar de voor de locatie zo essentiële seizoenswisselingen en naar de staties van het leven, naar het verstrijken van de tijd, naar transformatie en vergankelijkheid, en naar het voor Lustwarande en aanverwante buitenexposities zo belangrijke aspect wandelen. Waar je als wandelaar bij de afzonderlijke beelden, staties op zich, halt houdt, ontvouwen zich nieuwe verhalen, die voelbaar maar niet direct aanwijsbaar onderling verbonden zijn.

Dit jaar blikt Lustwarande met trots terug op twintig jaar expositiepraktijk in De Oude Warande. Voor STATIONS zijn daarom alleen kunstenaars uitgenodigd die, veelal als jonge talenten, eerder aan Lustwarande hebben deelgenomen. De geselecteerde kunstenaars, twaalf uit een lijst van honderdvijfenzeventig, hebben sinds hun eerdere deelname oeuvres ontwikkeld die inmiddels bepalend zijn voor de internationale sculpturale canon en zijn daarom van groot belang om getoond te worden.

Het moment dat een kind opeens weet: ik besta. Weinigen weten de taal te vinden om die ervaring op te schrijven; Tjitske Jansen kan dat.
Kraakhelder: ‘Als elfjarige kwam ik op een middag de trap af en wist ik dat ik er was en er niet meer zomaar niet kon zijn. Ik bestond. Daar had ik zelf niet zoveel over te zeggen.’ Zoals uit de titel zowel vervreemding als aanvaarding spreekt, zo is de ‘ik’ even ontredderd als wijs, even verward als begripvol.
Die ‘ik’ is een kind dat zich vragen stelt. Over opgroeien, over haar lichaam, over God, over pleegouders, over de fietsenmaker, over zekerheden van anderen, over de tijd. ‘Ik was bijna tien. Dat was snel gegaan. Ik was dus eigenlijk al bijna twintig, dertig, veertig, vijftig, zestig, zeventig, tachtig.’ Zo dreigend kan het besef van de eindigheid zijn. Zo onontkoombaar kun je dat opschrijven.
Tjitske Jansen (1971) combineert in wat ze schrijft als vanzelf poëzie, proza en theater. Al vanaf haar vroegste bundels, de bestsellers Het moest maar eens gaan sneeuwen en Koerikoeloem, treedt ze veel op en geeft ze met grote inzet les over schrijven, poëzie en performance aan middelbare scholieren. Haar werk werd genomineerd voor De Bronzen Uil en bekroond met de Anna Bijns Prijs

Bert Schierbeek (1918-1996), schrijver en dichter, was in de Tweede Wereldoorlog actief in het verzet, waarover hij schreef in zijn debuutroman Terreur tegen terreur (1945).
Hij was niet alleen redacteur en bestuurslid van De Bezige Bij maar ook medeoprichter en bestuurslid van het Fonds voor de Letteren, dat financiële ondersteuning geeft aan schrijvers. Ook maakte Schierbeek zich sterk voor experimentele dichters als Kouwenaar, Campert, Andreus en Vinkenoog. Hij onderhield nauwe contacten met kunstenaars uit andere disciplines: Lucebert, Karel Appel, Johan van der Keuken, Peter Schat en Jef Diederen.
Zijn roman Het boek Ik (1951) is een hoogtepunt in Schierbeeks proza. In een associatief geheel van autobiografie en essay wordt de betekenis van het woord ‘ik’ bespeeld en gezocht. Vanaf de bundel De deur (1972) werd Schierbeek ook als dichter bij een groter publiek bekend. Na die tijd bleef hij voornamelijk poëzie schrijven, steeds op zoek naar naar nieuwe vormen. Een toegenomen soberheid, ook in de typografie, valt in de laatste bundels op. Bijvoorbeeld in De tuinen van Suzhou (1986), waar het rustige tempo van de haiku in doorklinkt.
Schierbeek kreeg belangrijke literaire prijzen zoals de Lucy B. en C.W. van der Hoogt-prijs (1961), de Vijverberg-prijs (1971), de Herman Gorter-prijs (1978) en de Constantijn Huygens-prijs (1991). Najaar 2004 verschenen bij De Bezige Bij zijn Verzamelde gedichten, bezorgd en ingeleid door Karin Evers.
In 2021, 25 jaar na zijn overlijden, verschijnt zijn biografie Niemand is waterdicht door Graa Boomsma, geflankeerd door een nieuw editie van Het boek Ik. Niemand is waterdicht is de bewogen biografie van een verzetsman, een Vijftiger en een levenslange reiziger.
Net als voor zijn vrienden Remco Campert en Lucebert was de Tweede Wereldoorlog beslissend in het schrijversbestaan van Bert Schierbeek, zoals blijkt uit zijn openhartige oorlogsdagboeken. Na de bevrijding tekende hij met het genre-doorbrekende Het boek Ik protest aan tegen de naoorlogse artistieke behoudzucht en het politiek conservatisme.
Schierbeek werd niet alleen woordvoerder van de Vijftigers maar bezorgde zijn literaire vrienden ook een platform: De Bezige Bij. Voor die uitgeverij is Schierbeek gezichtsbepalend geweest als adviseur en bestuurslid
Zijn veelzijdigheid als schrijver is legendarisch: hij schreef traditioneel proza, essays, toneel, poëzie én veel vernieuwend proza. Schierbeek groeide op bij zijn grootmoeder in het Groningse Beerta en bij zijn vader in het Twentse Boekelo. Begin jaren vijftig ontwikkelde zich een moeizame ménage à trois met zijn vrouw Frieda Koch en de inwonende Lucebert. Het jaar 1970 werd een rampjaar: zijn tweede vrouw Margreetje kwam bij een auto-ongeluk om het leven.
Graa Boomsma (1953) is schrijver en essayist en sinds 1988 literair medewerker van De Groene Amsterdammer. Zijn romans De laatste tyfoon (1992) en Laagland (1999) werden genomineerd voor de AKO Literatuurprijs en de Libris Literatuur Prijs. In 2017 verscheen bij Van Oorschot zijn veelgeprezen biografie van A. Alberts: Leven op de rand.
In het voorjaar van 2021 kwam vaarwel. achtergelaten gedichten uit, een door Graa Boomsma samengestelde en ingeleide bundel met teruggevonden gedichten en tekeningen van Lucebert. Op 9 juni 2021 verschijnt van de hand van Boomsma Niemand is waterdicht, de biografie van Bert Schierbeek.

‘De taal is m’n zuurstof, als ik iets beschrijf, ben ik er.’
Dat denkt K. Schippers terwijl hij in Londen een adres zoekt. Hij vergist zich, loopt in een verkeerd deel van de stad, waar een straat toevallig dezelfde naam heeft. Een ondertitelaarster, een schilder uit Vietnam en andere voorbijgangers proberen hem te helpen zoeken. Komt hij samen met hen in het leven van de taal terecht?
In een wereld vol motto’s en letterspelen leiden ze hem naar iets heel anders dan de gezochte straat. Vlak bij zee, aan de Nederlandse kust, ontdekt hij de bronnen van de taal. Het is alsof ‘de woorden die ons op de laatste paar bladzijden ter wille zijn geweest, niet anders konden dan ons hierheen brengen’. Bij K. Schippers raakt de taal zelf betoverd – met talrijke foto’s en tekeningen als bewijs.
K. Schippers (Amsterdam, 1936) is schrijver, dichter, essayist en kunstcriticus. Hij heeft een omvangrijk oeuvre op zijn naam staan, dat bestaat uit romans, poëzie, essays, verhalen & beschouwingen, en een enkel kinderboek. Al vroeg werd hij bekend door het literaire tijdschrift Barbarber, dat hij in 1958 samen met J. Bernlef en G. Brands oprichtte. Hij introduceerde de readymade als poëzievorm. Van het cultureel tijdschrift Hollands Diep, dat van 1975 tot 1977 bestond, was hij een van de oprichters en eerste redacteuren. Zijn werk is veel gelauwerd. Voor zijn poëzie ontving hij in 1996 de P.C. Hooftprijs. Een jaar later kreeg hij de Pierre Bayle-Prijs voor zijn kunstkritieken. Zijn roman Poeder en wind (1996) werd genomineerd voor de Generale Bank Literatuurprijs; de roman Waar was je nou (2005) werd bekroond met de Libris Literatuur Prijs en groeide uit tot een bestseller. Hij is de schrijver van Buiten beeld, het Poëziegeschenk van de Poëzieweek 2014.

Expositie Ricardo van Eyk

CIVIL wordt een ruimtevullende totaalinstallatie van Ricardo van Eyk bestaande uit nieuw werk, grotendeels geproduceerd tijdens een werkperiode van bijna 4 weken in PARK; de tentoonstelling wordt hoofdzakelijk ter plekke ontwikkeld.
‘Hoewel mijn werk zich vooral binnen de schilderkunst begeeft, laten de fascinaties waaruit ik werk zich niet uitsluitend uitdrukken in het tweedimensionale. (…) In al mijn presentaties ben ik op zoek naar de dialoog tussen het werk en de ruimte; het beïnvloedt de keuze en plaatsing van voltooide werken; of verdergaande ruimtelijke ingrepen met wanden of vloerdelen worden vooraf ontworpen. Door langer ter plekke te kunnen werken, wil ik de ruimte toestaan een veel directere invloed op het proces te hebben, en daarmee de reguliere functie van de ruimte als achtergrond voor het ‘werk’ te verstoren.’
Het statige Tilburgse Wilhelminapark en omringende gebouwen, maar ook museum De Pont en het TextielMuseum vlakbij, zijn een herinnering aan de succesvolle textielindustrie in de 19e en begin 20e eeuw. De titel CIVIL benadrukt van deze omgeving twee interessante gegevens: enerzijds de civiele techniek, grote bouwprojecten in de vorm van de twee voormalige textielfabrieken; anderzijds burgerschap en hoe dit deel van de stad zich hier op inricht, bijvoorbeeld infrastructuur of parken zoals het Wilhelminapark.’

PARK ligt op 10 minuten loopafstand van het Centraal Station Tilburg in de nabijheid van Museum De Pont. Er is beperkt parkeergelegenheid voor de deur.
PARK is een kunstinitiatief opgericht in 2013 door Rob Moonen in samenwerking met een zestal andere Tilburgse kunstenaars. Op dit moment bestaat de PARK werkgroep uit Linda Arts, René Korten, Rob Moonen en Liza Voetman.
PARK ziet de noodzaak van een middenpodium dat zich positioneert tussen Kunstpodium T en Museum De Pont en zet zich daarvoor in door een tentoonstellingsprogramma in de voormalige Goretti-kapel aan het Wilhelminapark te Tilburg te realiseren.
PARK richt zich op actuele ontwikkelingen binnen de hedendaagse kunst én op kunstenaars met gedegen ervaring en bewezen kwaliteit. Er wordt plek geboden aan regionale collega’s maar ook aan landelijk of internationaal opererende kunstenaars, juist om een positieve bijdrage aan de discussie over actuele kunst tot stand te brengen. De werkgroep ambieert het podium van belang te laten zijn op landelijk niveau, maar bij elk project wordt met nadruk gezocht naar een inhoudelijke koppeling met de stad. De werkgroep is er van overtuigd dat samenwerking met andere partijen de zichtbaarheid en functionaliteit van de plek zal versterken, maar ook dat de plek een waardevolle stimulans voor de beeldende kunst in de stad en de regio zal kunnen zijn.
PARK wil een bijdrage leveren aan de ontwikkeling van een gunstig productie- en vestigingsklimaat voor beeldend kunstenaars uit de regio door deze in contact te brengen met een nationaal en internationaal netwerk.
Per jaar worden er vier a vijf projecten en een zomerresidentie gerealiseerd met waar mogelijk een bijpassend raamprogramma in de vorm van lezingen, kunstenaarsgesprekken, muziek en film.

This hiding from myself has led to all kinds of difficulties in my life. And this is a first step towards knowing and respecting myself better. I’ve loved Kate. But I am beginning a process and I hope you’ll come with me … [Kae is] an old English word that means jay bird. Jays are associated with communication, curiosity, adaptation to new situations and COURAGE which is the name of the game at the moment. It can also mean jackdaw which is the bird that symbolises death and rebirth. Ovid said the jackdaw brought the rain. Which I love. It has its roots in the Latin word for rejoice, be glad and take pleasure. And I hope to live more that way each day … This is a time of great reckoning. Privately, locally, globally. For me, the question is no longer ‘when will this change’ but ‘how far am I willing to go to meet the changes and bring them about in myself.’ I want to live with integrity. De Academie De Gouden Ganzenveer kent de Gouden Ganzenveer 2021 toe aan literatuurcriticus en auteur Margot Dijkgraaf. Jet Bussemaker maakte de laureaat bekend in het programma De Taalstaat op NPO Radio 1.
De Academie De Gouden Ganzenveer eert Margot Dijkgraaf vanwege haar grote rol als een sensibele en erudiete ‘ambassadeur van de letteren’, die verankerd is in Nederland, maar haar blik naar buiten richt. Zij brengt Nederlandstalige auteurs in Frankrijk en in andere Europese landen onder de aandacht en Franstalige – en daarmee ook Arabische en Afrikaanse – literatuur in Nederland. Met haar niet aflatende enthousiasme en ijver voor het ontsluiten van Europese literatuur – bijvoorbeeld blijkend uit haar initiatief voor de Europese Literatuurprijs – maakt ze belangrijke, maar minder bekende auteurs uit andere dan het Angelsaksische taalgebied toegankelijk voor een breed publiek.
De prijsuitreiking vindt plaats op maandag 20 september a.s. in Amsterdam. Een weerslag van deze bijeenkomst wordt vastgelegd in een speciale uitgave, die aan het eind van het jaar zal verschijnen. De Academie, een initiatief van het bestuur van stichting De Gouden Ganzenveer, kent jaarlijks deze culturele prijs toe. De leden zijn afkomstig uit de wereld van cultuur, wetenschap, politiek en het bedrijfsleven. Met deze onderscheiding wil de Academie het geschreven en gedrukte woord in het Nederlands taalgebied onder de aandacht brengen.
Voorgaande laureaten zijn Abdelkader Benali, Ian Buruma, Antjie Krog, Arnon Grunberg, Xandra Schutte, Geert Mak, David Van Reybrouck, Ramsey Nasr, Annejet van der Zijl, Remco Campert, Joke van Leeuwen, Adriaan van Dis, Joost Zwagerman, Tom Lanoye, Peter van Straaten, Maria Goos, Kees van Kooten, Jan Blokker en Michaël Zeeman.
Margot Dijkgraaf (1960) is literatuurcriticus, schrijver, interviewer en curator en schrijft al zo’n dertig jaar over literatuur, voornamelijk voor NRC. Ze publiceerde boeken over Franse en Europese letteren, over Hella S. Haasse en Cees Nooteboom. Haar recentste boek is Met Parijse pen. Literaire omzwervingen (met fotograaf Bart Koetsier, Boom, 2020). Met een scala aan partners in de internationale boekenwereld organiseert ze in binnen- en buitenland literaire activiteiten. Recent was ze intendant van de campagne Les Phares du Nord van het Nederlands Letterenfonds en de Nederlandse ambassade in Parijs, waarbij Nederlandstalige literatuur eregast was op grote Franse festivals. Binnenkort staat die centraal op het festival Le livre sur les quais in Morges, Zwitserland. Dijkgraaf is de initiatiefnemer van de Europese Literatuurprijs en co-organiseert jaarlijks de European Literature Night en de State of the European Literature, in samenwerking met EUNIC en de UvA/geesteswetenschappen. Ze was onder andere directeur van het Centre Français du livre bij Maison Descartes, van Academisch-cultureel Centrum SPUI25 en vervult advies-, jury- en bestuursfuncties in het culturele veld. Momenteel werkt ze aan een boek dat de voorlopige titel heeft In de voetsporen van mijn grootvader (Atlas Contact).
De Gouden Ganzenveer
De prijs wordt – zo mogelijk jaarlijks – toegekend aan een persoon of instituut vanwege zijn of haar grote betekenis voor het geschreven en gedrukte woord in de Nederlandse taal. Het bestuur van de stichting heeft de selectie van de kandidaten en de besluitvorming over de laureaat in handen gegeven van Academie De Gouden Ganzenveer. De Academieleden zijn afkomstig uit de wereld van cultuur, politiek, wetenschap en bedrijfsleven.
Ieder van hen heeft blijkt gegeven van betrokkenheid bij de Nederlandstalige cultuur; zij zijn op persoonlijke titel gevraagd. Eenmaal per jaar komen de leden bijeen om een besluit te nemen over de nieuwe laureaat. Deze besloten Academievergadering wordt gehouden in Museum Meermanno | Huis van het Boek, te ’s-Gravenhage. De toekenning wordt in januari via de media bekendgemaakt waarna in april de feestelijke uitreiking van de Gouden Ganzenveer in Amsterdam volgt. De prijs bestaat uit een ganzenveer van goud en een jaar buitengewoon lidmaatschap van de Academie. In de loop van het jaar verschijnt een speciale uitgave die de verdiensten van de laureaat boekstaaft.
In 1955, bij het vijfenzeventigjarig bestaan van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Uitgeversbond, werd de Gouden Ganzenveer voor het eerst toegekend. De eerste laureaat was de Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen. Met de prijs willen uitgevers – zo mogelijk jaarlijks – een persoon of instituut lauweren vanwege zijn of haar grote betekenis voor het geschreven en gedrukte woord in de Nederlandse taal. In totaal is de prijs 34 keer uitgereikt. In 2000, na het samengaan van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Uitgeversbond, de Nederlandse Organisatie van Tijdschrift-Uitgevers en de Vereniging De Nederlandse Dagbladpers in het nieuwe Nederlandse Uitgeversverbond (NUV), werd de culturele prijs ondergebracht in een aparte stichting.
Op maandag 20 september a.s. ontvangt Margot Dijkgraaf de Gouden Ganzenveer 2021.
