Het thema van de Poëzieweek 2019 is Vrijheid, met als motto: Zonder handen, zonder tanden.
De week opent op donderdag 31 januari met Gedichtendag en wordt woensdagavond 6 februari feestelijk afgesloten met De Grote Poëzieprijs, de Awater Poëzieprijs en de Turing Gedichtenwedstrijd. Tom Lanoye schrijft het Poëziegeschenk Vrij – Wij?, cadeau van de boekwinkel bij aankoop van € 12,50 aan poëzie.
Met Gedichtendag (31 januari 2019) gaat op de laatste donderdag van januari traditiegetrouw de Poëzieweek van start. Gedichtendag, sinds 2000 georganiseerd door Poetry International Rotterdam, is hét poëziefeest van Nederland en Vlaanderen.
Poëzieliefhebbers in Nederland en Vlaanderen organiseren die dag een grote diversiteit aan eigen poëzieactiviteiten en ook de media klinken die dag een stuk poëtischer.
Voor de enorme hoeveelheid optredens, publicaties, poëzieprijzen, -programma’s en -activiteiten is één dag simpelweg veel te kort!
De Poëzieweek wil een zo groot mogelijk bereik voor poëzie creëren en bundelt tal van activiteiten van organisatoren in Nederland en Vlaanderen.

Literary and music group Feest der Poëzie brings a theatrical lecture on the life and work of Oscar Wilde and one of his favorite beverages – absinthe. This Saturday at the Pianola Museum, 8.30 PM.
Immerse yourself in the story of one of the best-loved writers in the English language with prose, poetry, songs and drama by Oscar Wilde and his contemporaries, on a journey through his rise and fall.
Poet and absintheur David Kwa will demonstrate the absinthe ritual and read manifold roles, such as that of the dreaded Marquess of Queensberry.
Daan van de Velde (piano) and Susanne Winkler (soprano) will perform Irish and English art songs, as performing poet Simon Mulder takes on the roles of narrator and Oscar Wilde (indeed, wearing a contemporary pair of silk breeches) in the fascinating story of his life.
Also, Van de Velde and Mulder will bring the very special performance of a long lost work for piano and voice on Wilde’s ‘Ballad of Reading Gaol’ by early 20th century composer Henri Zagwijn.
The Poetry Bar will bring you carefully prepared absinthe, along with a decadent sonnet.

Aanstaande woensdag, 7 november, geeft schrijver Ton van Reen een lezing in de jaarlijkse lezingencyclus van het Dr. Winand Roukens Fonds, aan de Universiteit van Maastricht.
De lezing vindt plaats in de Karl Dittrichzaal van de Universiteit te Maastricht, in het voormalige Bonnefantenklooster, Bonnefantenstraat 2 te Maastricht.
Het thema van de lezingencyclus van het WRF is in dit studiejaar ‘Vreemd in Limburg’.
De eerste lezing werd gehouden door prof. Joep Geraets, hoogleraar genetica en celbiologie over ‘vreemd DNA in Limburg’. De tweede werd gehouden door Dr. Lotte Thissen, cultureel antropoloog, en had als thema de taal waarin wij met elkaar omgaan. De derde lezing is door Ton van Reen. De vierde lezing, over arbeid door buitenlanders zoals Polen, wordt gehouden door Karolina Swoboda, eigenaar van een van de grootste organisaties voor arbeidsbemiddeling in Europa.
In zijn lezing zal Ton van Reen vooral vertellen over de mensen die niet bij ons mochten horen, de vreemdelingen in eigen huis. Omdat ze door de katholieke kerk benoemd waren tot kinderen van de duivel: de kubla walda, de kaboten, de kabouters. In het kort, de door de rk Kerk verstoten kinderen, zoals de kinderen die werden geboren met het syndroom van Down, die volgens de kerk duivelskinderen waren, omdat hun vader de duivel zou zijn en hun moeder omgang had met de duivel.
De rk Kerk heeft altijd de mensen die haar niet goed gezind waren, of van wie ze niet wilden dat ze katholiek werden, in verband gebracht met de duivel, zoals joden, roma en sinti, vrouwen die van hekserij werden beschuldigd, enzovoort.
De duivel zou een geest zijn die zelf niet kon handelen , maar handlangers op aarde nodig had om zijn kwalijke werken uit te voeren, zoals misoogsten, uitbraken van pest en andere plagen, veeziektes , die tot hongersnoden hebben geleid, kinderroof, en zo meer.
Meer dan tien eeuwen lang heeft de kerk de mensen angst aangepraat voor alles wat anders was in de ogen van priesters en voor iedereen die anders dacht of een ander geloof aanhing.
Duizenden mensen, alleen al in het huidige Limburg, waren het slachtoffer van deze vervolgingen door een organisatie die zich boven alles verheven voelde en beschikte over leven en dood.
In de hele wereld werden er miljoenen mensen geslachtofferd en vaak na gruwelijke martelingen vermoord door een organisatie die zegt liefde te prediken maar haat heeft gezaaid en mensen tegen elkaar heeft opgezet.
Aanstaande woensdag, 7 november 2018, lezing van schrijver Ton van Reen in de jaarlijkse lezingencyclus van het Dr. Winand Roukens Fonds, aan de Universiteit van Maastricht.

In 1956 W. E. B. Du Bois was denied a passport to attend the Présence Africaine Congress of Black Writers and Artists in Paris.
So he sent the assembled a telegram.
“Any Negro-American who travels abroad today must either not discuss race conditions in the United States or say the sort of thing which our State Department wishes the world to believe.”
Taking seriously Du Bois’s allegation, Juliana Spahr breathes new life into age-old questions as she explores how state interests have shaped U.S. literature. What is the relationship between literature and politics? Can writing be revolutionary? Can art be autonomous, or is escape from nations and nationalisms impossible?
Du Bois’s Telegram brings together a wide range of institutional forces implicated in literary production, paying special attention to three eras of writing that sought to defy political orthodoxies by contesting linguistic conventions: avant-garde modernism of the early twentieth century; social-movement writing of the 1960s and 1970s; and, in the twenty-first century, the profusion of English-language works incorporating languages other than English.
Spahr shows how these literatures attempted to assert their autonomy, only to be shut down by FBI harassment or coopted by CIA and State Department propagandists. Liberal state allies such as the Ford and Rockefeller foundations made writers complicit by funding multiculturalist works that celebrated diversity and assimilation while starving radical anti-imperial, anti-racist, anti-capitalist efforts.
Spahr does not deny the exhilarations of politically engaged art. But her study affirms a sobering reality: aesthetic resistance is easily domesticated.
Juliana Spahr is Professor of English at Mills College. She is the author of eight volumes of poetry, including The Winter the Wolf Came, Well Then There Now, and Response, winner of the National Poetry Series Award. She is also the editor, with Claudia Rankine, of American Women Poets in the 21st Century and received the O. B. Hardison Jr. Poetry Prize from the Folger Shakespeare Library.

Set in an un-named city but with an astonishing, breath-shorteningly palpable sense of time and place Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. The story of inaction with enormous consequences and decisions that are never made, but for which people are judged and punished.
Middle sister is our protagonist. She is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her nearly-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with milkman (which she herself for the life of her cannot work out how it came about). But when first brother-in-law, who of course had sniffed it out, told his wife, her first sister, to tell her mother to come and have a talk with her, middle sister becomes ‘interesting’. The last thing she ever wanted to be. To be interesting is to be noticed and to be noticed is dangerous.
Milkman is a searingly honest novel told in prose that is as precise and unsentimental as it is devastating and brutal. A novel that is at once unlocated and profoundly tethered to place is surely a novel for our times.
Anna Burns was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. She is the author of two novels, No Bones and Little Constructions, and of the novella, Mostly Hero. No Bones won the Winifred Holtby Memorial Prize and was short-listed for the Orange Prize for Fiction. She lives in East Sussex, England.

Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. Originally published in 2007, this New York Times bestseller has resurfaced as a controversial book after Netflix aired a TV series by the same name. This YA novel was challenged and banned in multiple school districts because it discusses suicide.

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian written by Sherman Alexie
Consistently challenged since its publication in 2007 for acknowledging issues such as poverty, alcoholism, and sexuality, this National Book Award winner was challenged in school curriculums because of profanity and situations that were deemed sexually explicit.

Drama written and illustrated by Raina Telgemeier
This Stonewall Honor Award-winning, 2012 graphic novel from an acclaimed cartoonist was challenged and banned in school libraries because it includes LGBT characters and was considered “confusing.”

Despite winning multiple awards and being the most searched-for book on Goodreads during its debut year, this YA novel was challenged and banned in school libraries and curriculums because it was considered “pervasively vulgar” and because of drug use, profanity, and offensive language.

Returning after a brief hiatus from the Top Ten Most Challenged list, this ALA Notable Children’s Book, published in 2005, was challenged and labeled because it features a same-sex relationship.

The Electronic Literature Organization (ELO) holds its 2018 Conference and Festival, hosted by the Université du Québec à Montréal from 13 to 17 August 2018.
The Conference, the Festival and Exhibits will be held August 13th to 17th in downtown Montréal, Québec, Canada. Mind the Gap! will be bilingual, with both English and French tracks, showcasing Montreal’s important and dynamic local Québécois e-lit/digital arts community and extending a special welcome to e-lit’s global francophonie.
The aim of this conference is to think about e-lit in a digital culture. What is its relationship to current cultural practices and trends?
Two directions are proposed: explorations and interventions. The first direction features e-lit’s exploratory nature, its formal aspects, its use of technology, its renewal of narrative conventions, and at the same time its impact on literary theories and methodologies to renew themselves.
The second direction considers e-lit’s place in the public sphere, its relationship to digital and urban culture, to forms of conservation and presentation, and also to performance.

De schrijvers Alex Boogers, Margot Vanderstraeten en Tommy Wieringa zijn genomineerd voor de E. du Perronprijs 2017. De jury van de E. du Perronprijs heeft de volgende drie boeken genomineerd, waarbij het schrijverschap van Du Perron als leidraad en inspiratie heeft gegolden. De uitreiking vindt plaats op woensdagavond 18 april bij bkkc brabants kenniscentrum voor kunst en cultuur in Tilburg. Marja Pruis, schrijver en redacteur van de Groene Amsterdammer, houdt dan de E. du Perronlezing over arrogantie.
Onder een hemel van sproeten – Alex Boogers
Sproeten of sterren? Geleidelijk wordt de lezer dit verhaal ingetrokken en worden fascinerende personages voorgesteld: de zwarte onaangepaste Harvey, het getormenteerde maar getalenteerde buurmeisje Amy, de oude man Jacob met zijn hond Muis, de stratenmaker Angelo die Harvey van literaire boeken voorziet. Stuk voor stuk eenzame personages die anders zijn dan de mensen om hen heen, en die door Boogers op empathische wijze gepresenteerd worden. Dit is een roman over ongewone vriendschappen, ontwrichting en vergelding.
Mazzel tov. Mijn leven als werkstudente bij een orthodox-joodse familie – Margot Vanderstraeten
Dit boek biedt een fascinerend persoonlijk verslag van het leven als huiswerkbegeleider bij een orthodox-joodse familie in Antwerpen en geeft een unieke longitudinale blik op een besloten gemeenschap. Verschillen worden intelligent en integer besproken, en de lezer is getuige van de wederzijdse verwondering over anders-zijn. De respectvolle subjectieve toon wordt nooit onderbroken. Een empathisch maar ook informatief boek dat toont hoe je van elkaar kunt leren, zonder de scherpe randjes van intermenselijke relaties af te schaven.
De heilige Rita – Tommy Wieringa
Het bekende, provincialistische, kleine van een dorpsgemeenschap wordt op een natuurlijke manier geconfronteerd met het exotische, onbekende, en vreemde. Het fictieve maar onmiskenbaar Twentse Mariënveen is een dorp waar de horeca is overgenomen door Chinezen. Slavische talen klinken in het dorpscafé. Achterhaalde kruidenierswaren (waaronder pakjes Saroma) liggen te verstoffen en verkleuren in de winkel van Pietje Piep. En moederlijke Rita in Club Pancha biedt betaalde troost. Wieringa’s roman evoceert hoe Nederland veranderde, juist in een krimpregio aan de grens met Duitsland.
E. du Perronprijs
De E. du Perronprijs is een initiatief van de gemeente Tilburg, de School of Humanities and Digital Sciences van Tilburg University en brabants kenniscentrum voor kunst en cultuur (bkkc). De prijs is bedoeld voor personen of instellingen die, net als Du Perron in zijn tijd, grenzen signaleren en doorbreken die wederzijds begrip tussen verschillende bevolkingsgroepen in de weg staan. De prijs bestaat uit een geldbedrag van €2500 euro en een textiel object, ontworpen door studio ‘by aaaa’ (Moyra Besjes en Natasja Lauwers) en vervaardigd bij het TextielMuseum in Tilburg. Vorig jaar won Stefan Hertmans de prijs voor zijn roman De Bekeerlinge. Andere laureaten waren onder meer Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer (2015), Mohammed Benzakour (2013), Koen Peeters (2012), Ramsey Nasr (2011) en Alice Boot & Rob Woortman (2010).

De E. du Perronprijs 2017 wordt op woensdagavond 18 april 2018 uitgereikt tijdens de avond dat ook de E. du Perronlezing wordt gehouden bij het brabants kenniscentrum voor kunst en cultuur (bkkc) aan de Spoorlaan 21 i-k. 49e Poetry International Festival Rotterdam
Het jaarlijkse feest van de internationale poëzie
Op dinsdag 29 mei opent het 49e Poetry International Festival in Theater Rotterdam. Tot en met zondag 3 juni hoor je voor de 49e keer de mooiste gedichten uit alle windstreken en in vele talen, eerst in de Schouwburg, aansluitend in en om Locatie Witte de With.
Naast poëzievoordrachten brengt het festival films, muziek, interviews, lezingen, themabijeenkomsten en masterclasses. Een kermis van verlangen, kritiek, avontuur en troost, met de kunst van het woord als brandstof. Iedereen is uitgenodigd op het jaarlijkse feest van de poëzie.
Kom alvast in de stemming en vertaal zelf de poëzie van de festivaldichters tijdens het vertaalproject Met Andere Woorden. Vanaf 1 maart staan de eerste gedichten online. Kies je favoriete taal en dichter en ga aan de slag (zie verder de website van p.i.).

Het besluit van president Trump de Amerikaanse ambassade in Israël naar Jeruzalem te verhuizen inspireerde Patti Smith tot het schrijven van een gedicht, The New Jerusalem.
Dit nieuwe, nog ongepubliceerde werk van de beroemde punkpoëet verschijnt exclusief bij Nexus als tweetalige uitgave in de Nexus Bibliotheek. Naast The New Jerusalem zal deze uitgave ook een drietal eerdere gedichten bevatten. De vertaling van de gedichten wordt verzorgd door Onno Kosters. The New Jerusalem wordt gepresenteerd bij het Nexus-symposium ‘An Education in Counterculture’, 26 mei in Amsterdam.
. . .these things we saw written on the immense screen once known as sky. And these things we heard as prophecy’s lullaby. The mountain is the mountain. The Lord is the Lord. The holy city belongs to none. The mountains of Judah belong to none. The yielding seed belongs to none. And we are the new Jerusalem.
Patti Smith, USA 1946, is zangeres en dichteres. Als ‘Godmother of Punk’ protesteerde zij met krachtige, controversiële muziek tegen de gevestigde orde en wezenloze fabrieksarbeid in de vercommercialiseerde wereld. Ze groeide op met de muziek van Bob Dylan, leefde samen met fotograaf Robert Mapplethorpe en werd een bekend gezicht in de turbulente New Yorkse kunstscene.
In 1974 begon Smith op te treden met gitarist Lenny Kaye, met wie ze nog steeds de kern van de band The Patti Smith Group vormt. Haar debuutalbum Horses (1975) wordt gezien als een van de invloedrijkste albums in de geschiedenis van de rockmuziek. Samen met Bruce Springsteen schreef ze Because the Night, haar grootste hit. Naast vele albums schreef Smith ook dichtbundels en boeken, waaronder Just Kids (2010), haar bekroonde autobiografie over het leven in New York in de jaren zeventig en haar relatie met Mapplethorpe.
