Announcing the 2020 Norma Farber Award winner, Zaina Alsous with A Theory of Birds (Poems)
Aina Alsous is the 2020 recipient of the Poetry Society of America’s Norma Farber Book Award for her book A Theory of Birds (University of Arkansas Press). The Norma Farber Book Award honors a first book of original poetry written by a living author.
The Judge was Matthew Shenoda. Matthew Shenoda’s Citation: In Zaina Alsous’ A Theory of Birds we are ushered into a re-calibration of the world, one intent on the eradication of that which has been oppressive and divisive. In these poems history unravels us in fragments, causing us to fold ourselves into a new definition of “self” and an unabashed rejection of our positions as “subjects.” The poems found here are an honest and open exploration of how we come into a sense of our own understanding in a postcolonial world. Alsous’ poems are driven by the asking, often posing sentient questions like “who translated kings and not birds?”; questions that cause us to think of redefinition. And while her poems are searing in their critiques of political, racial, and gendered domination, like all good artists she is poignant in her ability to implicate herself at every turn and help us break through the binaries we often use to define ourselves. Hers is an aesthetic of fragmentation as a collective piecing together. A Theory of Birds teaches us that the interior narratives, the often quiet things that make each of us whole, are the most essential.
Zaina Alsous is a prison abolitionist, a daughter of the Palestinian diaspora, and a movement worker in South Florida. Her poetry, reviews, and essays have been published in POETRY Magazine, The Kenyon Review, the New Inquiry, Adroit, and elsewhere. She edits for Scalawag Magazine, a publication dedicated to unsettling dominant narratives of the U.S. South. Her chapbook Lemon Effigies won the Rick Campbell Chapbook Prize and was published by Anhinga Press. Her first full-length collection A Theory of Birds won the Etel Adnan Poetry Prize, and was published by the University of Arkansas Press in the fall of 2019.
Every year the University of Arkansas Press, together with the Radius of Arab American Writers, awards the Etel Adnan Poetry Prize for a first or second book of poetry in English by a writer of Arab heritage. The series is edited by Hayan Charara and Fady Joudah and supported by the King Fahd Center for Middle East Studies at the University of Arkansas.

The book has been developed and curated by Nick Cave in collaboration with Christina Back. The images were selected from ‘Stranger Than Kindness: The Nick Cave Exhibition’, opening at the Royal Danish Library in Copenhagen in March 2020.
Nick Cave has been performing music for more than thirty years and is best known as the songwriter and lead singer of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, whose latest album Ghosteen was widely received as their best work ever. Cave’s body of work also covers a wider range of media and modes of expression including film score composition and writing of novels. His recent Conversations events and Red Hand Files website have seen Cave exploring deeper and more direct relationships with his fans.

The exhibition was developed and designed by Christina Back, Royal Danish Library and Janine Barrand, Arts Centre Melbourne in collaboration with Nick Cave for The Black Diamond, Copenhagen. It was curated and produced by Royal Danish Library in collaboration with the Australian Music Vault at Arts Centre Melbourne. The soundscapes were composed and recorded for the exhibition by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.

Rebellen en dwarsdenkers
De 85ste Boekenweek staat in het teken van hen die ons voorstellingsvermogen vergroten: de rebellen en dwarsdenkers. Het lezen van boeken zet namelijk aan 
tot nadenken, zodat lezers begrip ontwikkelen voor anderen en minder vasthouden aan vooroordelen (bron: KVB Boekwerk, De impact van het boek). Van de dromerige dwarsdenker die veilig thuis afreist naar een andere wereld tot de rebel die zijn messcherpe pen als wapen gebruikt tegen de status quo. In de literatuur is er ruimte voor al die geluiden. Het lef van schrijvers om taboes te doorbreken en een steen in de vijver te gooien is van levensbelang voor onze samenleving. Een greep uit rebelse boeken en dwarse schrijvers
De rebellen van de literatuur hebben altijd ons denken beïnvloed: stoere, onorthodoxe, eigengereide auteurs als Multatuli, Annie M.G. Schmidt, Willem Frederik Hermans, Astrid 
Roemer, Dimitri Verhulst en Charlotte Mutsaers hebben werelden geopend. Rebelse personages en dwarse karakters zoals Don Quichot, Madame Bovary, Tommy Wieringa’s Joe Speedboot, Esther Gerritsens Roxy en Hava uit Aafke Romeijns Concept M houden een spiegel voor en laten ons nadenken over wie wij zijn. Schrijvers als Jan Cremer, Connie Palmen, Anna Blaman en Jan Wolkers zoeken grenzen van de literatuur op en verleggen ze. Boeken kunnen weerstand oproepen, kunnen verboden worden en verbrand, maar de kracht van de woorden laat zich niet temmen. Nabokovs Lolita, Houellebecqs Onderworpen of Erasmus’ Lof der zotheid hebben onder vuur gelegen, maar zijn inmiddels onmiskenbare oriëntatiepunten in het literaire landschap. Zwaal is een dichter die met een grandioos taalvermogen de wereld toont in al haar facetten, niet alleen als natuurverschijnsel maar ook als erotische verschijning, als de zee, het water, de vrouw, de kleuren en geuren van alles wat tastbaar is.

Theresa Lola is a British Nigerian Poet, born 1994. She was joint-winner of the 2018 Brunel International African Poetry Prize and was shortlisted for the 2017 Bridport Poetry Prize. In 2018 she was invited by the Mayor of London’s Office to read at Parliament Square alongside Sadiq Khan and actress Helen McCory at the unveiling of Millicent Fawcett’s statue. She has appeared on BBC Radio 4 Woman’s Hour, and ASOS Magazine with Octavia Collective among others. She is an alumni of the Barbican Young Poets Programme.

Daniil Charms die in werkelijkheid Daniil Ivanovic Juvacov heette, werd in 1905 in St. Petersburg geboren, waar hij in 1942 stierf.
In 1926 richtte hij met Aleksandr Vvdenski en Nikolaj Zabolotski de avantgardegroep Oberiu (Objeedinenije realnogo iskoesstva – ‘Vereniging van reële kunst’) op. Hun doel was een artistieke revolutie door te voeren, parallel aan de politieke revolutie.
Alhoewel ze het woord niet gebruikten pleitten ze voor absurde kunst. De doodsteek kwam toen ze in 1930 beschuldigd werden van protest tegen de dictatuur van het proletariaat. Charms werd in 1931 veroordeeld tot verbanning naar Koersk, waarvandaan hij in 1933 terugkeerde.
Hij legde zich toen, omdat zijn werk voor volwassenen niet-publicabel was geworden, toe op kinderliteratuur.
Uiteindelijk werd hij in 1941, tijdens het beleg van het Leningrad (tot 1924 Petersburg genoemd), weer gearresteerd en krankzinnig verklaard. Charms stierf begin 1942, vermoedelijk uitgehongerd, in de psychiatrische afdeling van de gevangenis Kresty in Leningrad. Hij heeft geen graf.
Na zijn dood werden zijn manuscripten teruggevonden. In de jaren zestig begonnen publicaties van dit onuitgegeven werk te verschijnen, aanvankelijk vooral in het Westen. Op grond hiervan kreeg Charms algauw de reputatie van Ruslands belangrijkste absurdistische auteur.
