Faisal Mohyuddin delves into the past of his parents and their neighbours in Pakistan and India in a self-consciously impossible attempt to find some way of belonging to a place that is lost. Moving from elegant ghazals of lament to stuttering, disjointed phrases of yearning, Mohyuddin portrays with restrained emotion the complexities of what it is to be displaced, geographically, spiritually, psychologically. With moments of sorrow interspersed with unsettling humour, deep familial love and celebrations of beauty, it is a story recognizable to any who have felt displaced in a new world. If the personal is political, then this is truly poetry for our times.
Faisal Mohyuddin, a child of immigrants from Pakistan, is the author of the chapbook The Riddle of Longing (Backbone Press, 2017). He is the recipient of the 2014 Edward Stanley Award from Prairie Schooner and a 2017 Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award. A graduate of Carleton College, Northwestern University, and Columbia College Chicago, he is also an alumnus of the U.S. Department of State’s Teachers for Global Classrooms program. He teaches English at Highland Park High School in Illinois, serves as an educator adviser to the global not- for-profit Narrative 4, and lives with his wife and son in Chicago. THE DISPLACED CHILDREN OF DISPLACED CHILDREN is his debut full-length collection.

Renate Maria Dorrestein (Amsterdam, 25 januari 1954 – Aerdenhout, 4 mei 2018) was een Nederlandse schrijfster, journaliste en feministe. Dorrestein, afgelopen vrijdag (4 mei) op 64-jarige leeftijd overleden aan slokdarmkanker, was iemand met zeer uitgesproken meningen.
Tussen 1983 en nu, een periode van vijfendertig jaar, publiceerde Dorrestein vierendertig titels: een gemiddelde van bijna een boek per jaar.
Renate Dorrestein werd in 1954 geboren in Amsterdam. Haar vader was advocaat, haar moeder (tot ze trouwde) lerares. Na het gymnasium schreef ze voor bladen als Libelle, Panorama, Opzij en De Tijd.
Dorrestein debuteerde in 1983 met de roman Buitenstaanders. Tien jaar later ontving ze de Annie Romein Prijs (tegenwoordig de Opzij Literatuurprijs) voor haar hele oeuvre. Ze werd ook genomineerd voor de Libris Literatuur Prijs 1995 (met Een sterke man), de AKO Literatuurprijs 2003 (met Zonder genade) en driemaal voor de NS Publieksprijs. In totaal verkocht ze 2 miljoen boeken.
Haar laatste boek: Dagelijks werk, is een afwisselende en geanimeerde bundeling van essays, lezingen en brieven waarin ze verslag doet van haar bezoeken aan het ziekenhuis. (Renate Dorrestein: Dagelijks werk. Een schrijversleven. Podium, 300 blz. € 19,99)
Renate Dorrestein zal op Hemelvaartsdag, 10 mei, in besloten kring worden begraven. The final collection of the seminal musician and poet, which he was determined to complete before his death
Just weeks before his death in late 2016, Leonard Cohen told The New Yorker that he was ready for the end to come. He just wanted enough time to put his last book in order. Leonard Cohen was a hugely influential Canadian poet, songwriter, and cultural icon who died on the eve of the 2016 presidential election. His “Hallelujah” is widely considered the redemptive song of the resistance. Cohen’s many canonical songs (“Suzanne,” “So Long, Marianne,” “Famous Blue Raincoat,” “Dance Me to the End of Love,” and others) have earned him a place in the small pantheon that includes Bob Dylan and Patti Smith. Cohen’s many honors include a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a Prince of Asturias Award for Literature, and election to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Biography: In the course of a long career at Sotheby’s Christopher de Hamel has probably handled and catalogued more illuminated manuscripts and over a wider range than any person alive. Since 2000, he has been Fellow and Librarian of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. The Parker Library, in his care, includes many of the earliest manuscripts in English language and history. He is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and the Royal Historical Society.

Wieringa’s roman evoceert hoe Nederland veranderde, juist in een krimpregio aan de grens met Duitsland.
E. du Perronprijs
De E. du Perronprijs is een initiatief van de gemeente Tilburg, de School of Humanities and Digital Sciences van Tilburg University en brabants kenniscentrum voor kunst en cultuur (bkkc). De prijs is bedoeld voor personen of instellingen die, net als Du Perron in zijn tijd, grenzen signaleren en doorbreken die wederzijds begrip tussen verschillende bevolkingsgroepen in de weg staan. De prijs bestaat uit een geldbedrag van €2500 euro en een textiel object, ontworpen door studio ‘by aaaa’ (Moyra Besjes en Natasja Lauwers) en vervaardigd bij het TextielMuseum in Tilburg. Vorig jaar won Stefan Hertmans de prijs voor zijn roman De Bekeerlinge. Andere laureaten waren onder meer Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer (2015), Mohammed Benzakour (2013), Koen Peeters (2012), Ramsey Nasr (2011) en Alice Boot & Rob Woortman (2010).

49e Poetry International Festival Rotterdam
Het jaarlijkse feest van de internationale poëzie
Op dinsdag 29 mei opent het 49e Poetry International Festival in Theater Rotterdam. Tot en met zondag 3 juni hoor je voor de 49e keer de mooiste gedichten uit alle windstreken en in vele talen, eerst in de Schouwburg, aansluitend in en om Locatie Witte de With.
Naast poëzievoordrachten brengt het festival films, muziek, interviews, lezingen, themabijeenkomsten en masterclasses. Een kermis van verlangen, kritiek, avontuur en troost, met de kunst van het woord als brandstof. Iedereen is uitgenodigd op het jaarlijkse feest van de poëzie.
Kom alvast in de stemming en vertaal zelf de poëzie van de festivaldichters tijdens het vertaalproject Met Andere Woorden. Vanaf 1 maart staan de eerste gedichten online. Kies je favoriete taal en dichter en ga aan de slag (zie verder de website van p.i.).

Het besluit van president Trump de Amerikaanse ambassade in Israël naar Jeruzalem te verhuizen inspireerde Patti Smith tot het schrijven van een gedicht, The New Jerusalem.
Dit nieuwe, nog ongepubliceerde werk van de beroemde punkpoëet verschijnt exclusief bij Nexus als tweetalige uitgave in de Nexus Bibliotheek. Naast The New Jerusalem zal deze uitgave ook een drietal eerdere gedichten bevatten. De vertaling van de gedichten wordt verzorgd door Onno Kosters. The New Jerusalem wordt gepresenteerd bij het Nexus-symposium ‘An Education in Counterculture’, 26 mei in Amsterdam.

Patti Smith, USA 1946, is zangeres en dichteres. Als ‘Godmother of Punk’ protesteerde zij met krachtige, controversiële muziek tegen de gevestigde orde en wezenloze fabrieksarbeid in de vercommercialiseerde wereld. Ze groeide op met de muziek van Bob Dylan, leefde samen met fotograaf Robert Mapplethorpe en werd een bekend gezicht in de turbulente New Yorkse kunstscene.
In 1974 begon Smith op te treden met gitarist Lenny Kaye, met wie ze nog steeds de kern van de band The Patti Smith Group vormt. Haar debuutalbum Horses (1975) wordt gezien als een van de invloedrijkste albums in de geschiedenis van de rockmuziek. Samen met Bruce Springsteen schreef ze Because the Night, haar grootste hit. Naast vele albums schreef Smith ook dichtbundels en boeken, waaronder Just Kids (2010), haar bekroonde autobiografie over het leven in New York in de jaren zeventig en haar relatie met Mapplethorpe.

Na de vertoning vindt aldaar ook de presentatie plaats van zijn nieuwe bundel Nachtleven, met illustraties van Daisy Karthaus.
Jasper Mikkers (Oerle, 1948) debuteerde in 1974 onder het pseudoniem Tymen Trolsky bij de Bezige Bij met de roman Hyacinta en Pasceline. Bij dezelfde uitgeverij verschenen later datzelfde jaar maar liefst drie dichtbundels .Na de onthulling van zijn pseudoniem in 1976 volgden nog vele publicaties, zowel onder de naam Tymen Trolsky als zijn echte naam. Naast dichtbundels onder meer het reisboek De weg van de regen (1990), de verhalenbundel De kleine jongen en de rivier (1994), en de romans Het einde van de eeuwigheid (2000) en Karl Marx Universiteit (2009).
In de periode 2013-2015 was hij stadsdichter van Tilburg; hierover schreef hij de bundel Gespiegelde stad (2015).
Nachtleven is de derde dichtbundel die hij publiceert bij de bibliofiele uitgeverij Brandon Pers, eerder verschenen Kwatrijnen (1979) en De landmeters van de keizer (2002).
Nachtleven is in meer dan een opzicht een opvallende bundel. Zoals de dichter zelf in het voorwoord schrijft: ‘Aanzet tot het schrijven van deze bundel lag in het idee dromen die regelmatig terugkwamen vast te leggen’. En wat deze uitgave zeker zo bijzonder maakt zijn de erin opgenomen tien prachtige aquarellen van Daisy Karthaus die aansluiten bij de thematiek van de tweeëntwintig sonnetten.

Old Angel Midnight is a treasure trove of Kerouac’s experiments with automatic writing, a method he practiced constantly to sharpen his imaginative reflexes.
Recorded in a series of notebooks between 1956-1959, what Kerouac called his “endless automatic writing piece” began while he shared a cabin with poet Gary Snyder.
Kerouac tried to emulate Snyder’s daily Buddhist meditation discipline, using the technique of “letting go” to free his mind for pure spontaneous writing, annotating the stream of words flowing through his consciousness in response to auditory stimuli and his own mental images.
Kerouac continued his exercise in spontaneous composition over the next three years, including a period spent with William Burroughs in Tangiers. He made no revisions to the automatic writing entries in his notebooks, which were collected and transcribed for publication as originally written.
Old Angel Midnight attests to the success of Kerouac’s experiment and bears witness to his commitment to his craft, and to the pleasure he takes in writing: “I like the bliss of mind.”
