Né en 1970, Laurent Vignat poursuit des études de lettres à la Sorbonne et devient professeur de français. Il publie son premier roman en 2006, après quelques textes épars publiés dans des revues.
Sur des carnets, il saisit les bizarreries d’une société qu’il juge de plus en plus folle, ses contemporains, des sourires, des tics de langage et des bribes de vie qui deviennent, à force de travail et d’obstination, des histoires.

He released 14 studio albums, including three in the last years of his life when he also became one of the most acclaimed arena performing artists in the world.
Among his numerous honours, he is the recipient of the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award 2010, the Prince of Asturias Award for Literature 2011, the inaugural New England PEN Award for Excellence in Lyrics 2012, the 2016 Juno Awards for Song of the Year and Album of the Year, and he has been inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the US Songwriters Hall of Fame. He died in November 2016.

The true story of twin sisters, Dorothea and Gladys Cromwell, born into New York’s Gilded Age, living lives of wealth and privilege, as told by Dennis Whitehead.
Amid the fervor of America’s entry into the First World War, the sisters volunteered for service with the American Red Cross in France, a country they knew and loved. To French soldiers seeking refreshment and solace in the Red Cross canteen, the identical twins were known as anges jumeaux, the twin angels.
Witnessing the non-stop horrors in the worst fighting in the war, the sisters were utterly exhaustion, both mentally and physically, when they boarded the SS La Lorraine for the return journey home. They had wished to continue their service to the people of France after the fighting stopped but were convinced to return to New York by their brother.
What happened on that ship, on that frigid January 1919 evening, almost one-hundred years ago, is one of the great untold stories of World War I, and the impact that modern warfare had upon not just the men in the trenches, but upon its women and other non-combatants, as well as civilians, that remained unrecognized until the Vietnam War.

H. G. Wells was born Herbert George in Bromley, Kent, England, on September 21, 1866. His father was a professional cricketer and sometimes shopkeeper, his mother a former lady’s maid.
Although “Bertie” left school at fourteen to become a draper’s apprentice (a life he detested), he later won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science in London, where he studied with the famous Thomas Henry Huxley. He began to sell articles and short stories regularly in 1893.
In 1895, his immediately successful novel rescued him from a life of penury on a schoolteacher’s salary. His other “scientific romances”—The Island of Dr. Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), The War of the Worlds (1898), The First Men in the Moon (1901), and The War in the Air (1908)—won him the distinction as the father of science fiction.
Henry James saw in Wells the most gifted writer of the age, but Wells, having coined the phrase “the war that will end war” to describe World War I, became increasingly disillusioned and focused his attention on educating mankind with his bestselling Outline of History (1920) and his later utopian works. Living until 1946, Wells witnessed a world more terrible than any of his imaginative visions, and he bitterly observed: “Reality has taken a leaf from my book and set itself to supercede me.”
The War of the Worlds (1898) conjures a terrifying, tentacled race of Martians who devastate the Earth and feed on their human victims while their voracious vegetation, the red weed, spreads over the ruined planet. After the novel’s hero finds himself trapped in what is left of London, despairing at the destruction of human civilization, he discovers that life on Earth is more resilient than he had imagined. Adapted by Orson Welles for his notorious 1938 radio drama and subsequently by many filmmakers, H. G. Wells’s timeless story shows no sign of losing its grip on readers’ imaginations.

Hij publiceerde meer dan twintig boeken in uiteenlopende genres, vooral essayistiek in het grensgebied van literatuur, filosofie, cultuurgeschiedenis en politiek. Zijn werk werd diverse malen met prestigieuze prijzen bekroond.

Die 70. Frankfurter Buchmesse (10.-14. Oktober 2018) fällt in eine bewegte Zeit: Während die Idee eines geeinten Europas in die Defensive gerät, gewinnen populistische Gruppierungen in vielen demokratischen Ländern an Zulauf.
Das politische Klima in Deutschland ist aufgeheizt – nicht zuletzt wegen der bevorstehenden Landtagswahlen in Bayern und Hessen. Gleichzeitig verändern sich die wirtschaftlichen Voraussetzungen der Buch- und Verlagsbranche grundlegend: Immer weniger Menschen beziehen ihre Informationen aus etablierten Medien; „alternative Fakten“ sind längst Teil der Berichterstattung. Den demokratischen Meinungsbildungsprozess durch gut recherchierte Inhalte zu ermöglichen, hat für Branchenakteure oberste Priorität und ist mit Blick auf eine immer kleiner werdende Zahl von Lesern und Buchkäufern zugleich die größte Herausforderung.

An fünf Tagen im Oktober werden in Frankfurt Geschäfte gemacht, wirtschaftliche Tendenzen analysiert, gesellschaftliche Phänomene diskutiert und kulturelle Trends präsentiert. Die Frankfurter Buchmesse bezieht mit einem Veranstaltungsprogramm im Zentrum Weltempfang (Halle 4.1 B 81) und im neuen Frankfurt Pavilion selbst Stellung: Hier geht es um Kunst im Spannungsfeld von Macht und Moral, um Strategien gegen antidemokratische Tendenzen, um Grenzbereiche politischer Kommunikation. Auf der Eröffnungs-Pressekonferenz am Dienstag, 9. Oktober 2018, spricht die nigerianische Autorin Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, deren Manifest „We Should All Be Feminists“ eine Diskussion über Feminismus ausgelöst hat. Hochrangige internationale Vertreter aus Politik und Gesellschaft haben ihr Kommen angekündigt, darunter Federica Mogherini, die Hohe Vertreterin der EU für Außen- und Sicherheitspolitik, Prof. Monika Grütters, Staatsministerin für Kultur und Medien, und Mamuka Bachtadse, Ministerpräsident Georgiens, dem Gastland der Frankfurter Buchmesse 2018.
Die Frankfurter Buchmesse ist mit über 7.300 Ausstellern aus 102 Ländern, rund 286.000 Besuchern, über 4.000 Veranstaltungen und rund 10.000 akkreditierten Journalisten und Bloggern die größte Fachmesse für das internationale Publishing.

FLAM (Forum of Live Art Amsterdam) 2018 is een jaarlijks terugkerende tentoonstelling in Arti et Amicitiae, waarin de grote verscheidenheid aan uitingen binnen de hedendaagse performancekunst ruimte krijgt.

De achtste editie vangt aan met FLAM Live: een intensieve week van live-kunst, waarin het lichaam met diens vele betekenissen het medium is. Deze editie wordt uitgebreid met FLAM Encounter: een tentoonstelling met installaties die op verschillende manieren hun oorsprong vinden in een performance. Middels deze transformatie biedt FLAM VIII een podium voor zowel de efemere als de materiële kant van diverse artistieke praktijken.
Om verschillende perspectieven op de werken te activeren hanteert FLAM VIII een metaforisch kader. De performances in de live-week worden opgevat als elementen van een wilde tuin; de toeschouwers worden uitgenodigd door de wilde tuin te dwalen, en samen met anderen de live-ervaring te delen.
De tentoonstelling wordt opgevat als een cruise-tuin, waarin objecten een beweging aansporen. FLAM Encounter nodigt het publiek uit om met een cruisende attitude de tentoonstellingszalen te betrekken, verschillende gezichtspunten in te nemen en een persoonlijke relatie aan te gaan met de objecten en andere lichamen in de ruimte. Het programma is ontworpen om onverwachte kruisbestuivingen te genereren tussen de kunstenaars, hun werk en het publiek.

Die 1936 in einem Schweizer Verlag erschienene Briefsammlung “Deutsche Menschen” ist Walter Benjamins letzte Veröffentlichung zu Lebzeiten.
Siebenundzwanzig Briefe von Kant bis Goethe, von Droste-Hülshoff bis Büchner aus den Jahren zwischen 1767 und 1883 hat er zusammengestellt und kommentiert, um seinen Landsleuten das bessere Beispiel eines aufgeklärten und humanistischen Bürgertums vorzuhalten.
Das Private und das Objektive der Briefe sind durch den Abstand des Betrachters nicht mehr Gegensätze: Beides vermischt sich, gleicht sich an. Die Personen mit ihren Bedürfnissen gehen auf in ihrer Epoche, ihre Freuden und Schmerzen zeigen sich als Zeichen ihrer Zeit und Herkunft.

NEW YORK – The unannounced demolition of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei’s studio in Beijing is symptomatic of a larger attack on human rights and artistic expression in China, said PEN America today.
On August 6, Artist and activist Ai Weiwei announced on social media that authorities had demolished his Beijing artist studio. Ai stated that he had received no advance notice prior to the demolition. Although several of his works were damaged in the studio’s demolition, the artist explained that he is more preoccupied with the effects of China’s “urban development” projects on artists and migrant populations, saying: “Since last year, a policy was enacted to clear out migrant workers from Beijing . . . Those who do not belong to the establishment, including artists, are always the first to be discriminated against and sacrificed.”
Within the past few years, artist colonies including Songzhuang and Caochangdi—the latter an arts district that Ai helped develop—have been targeted for eviction and demolition. Artists have cited both runaway economic development and political disfavor as rationales for authorities’ hostile attitudes. More broadly, an urban development policy conceived last year to push migrant workers out of Beijing has empowered local authorities to take unannounced action to demolish property, a policy that has led to thousands of migrant workers losing their homes.
“Regardless of the government’s motives, the unannounced demolition of an artist’s studio is a demonstration of a lack of appreciation or even acknowledgment for the role of the artist in society,” said Julie Trébault, Director of PEN America’s Artists at Risk Connection. “Around the world, artist studios and communes are spaces to be cherished, not discarded.”
