De campagne ‘Liefde voor Muziek’ is een initiatief van de voltallige Nederlandse muziekindustrie. Ruim 3000 artiesten, organisaties en bedrijven uit de gehele breedte (pop, jazz, klassiek en elektronische muziek) van de muziekbranche steunen de campagne met hart en ziel.
In maart van dit jaar verstomde als gevolg van het coronavirus alle livemuziek in poppodia, concertzalen en op festivals even onverwachts als abrupt. Veel artiesten, gezonde bedrijven en ZZP’ers hebben geen omzet of inkomen meer. Tienduizenden banen en knowhow dreigen verloren te gaan. Nederland heeft geweldige muzikanten. Nationaal en internationaal succesvolle sterren in alle genres van de pop, dance en jazz. Deze kunnen optreden dankzij een groot ecosysteem van 150.000 professionals.
De organisatie van ‘LIEFDE VOOR MUZIEK’! wil de regering laten (in)zien hoe omvangrijk en divers de Nederlandse muziekindustrie is, wat haar culturele en economische waarde is.
Zij vragen de muziekliefhebber om de petitie ‘Liefde voor Muziek’ te tekenen. Laat weten dat je het voortbestaan van live muziek (festivals en concerten) in Nederland ook belangrijk vindt.

Tussen zijn vijftiende en twintigste droomde Frans Kellendonk (1951-1990), naderhand uitgegroeid tot een van de belangrijkste schrijvers van zijn generatie, niet alleen van literaire roem, hij ambieerde ook een carrière als singer-songwriter. Hij schreef tientallen liedjes, zijn vriend Leonard de Vos maakte er de muziek bij.
Met de begeleidende brieven en fragmenten uit zijn bijdragen aan diverse schoolkranten van het Nijmeegse Dominicuscollege geven Kellendonks liedjes een authentiek beeld van het puberbestaan tijdens de jaren zestig. Het was de periode waarin Bob Dylan furore maakte, de Amerikaanse bemoeienis met Vietnam op wereldwijde protesten stuitte en de anti-autoritaire provobeweging de Hollandse huiskamers danig wist te choqueren.
Jong in de jaren zestig roept de sfeer op van bevlogen jongeren in tijden van sociale en culturele veranderingen.
Jaap Goedegebuure (1947), emeritus hoogleraar en literatuurcriticus, publiceerde in 2018 de positief ontvangen biografie van Frans Kellendonk. Eerder maakte hij met Oek de Jong een uitgave van Frans Kellendonks brieven, en bezorgde hij (met Rick Honings) een uitgebreide editie van Kellendonks Verzameld werk.

UN should demand release of jailed
journalists amid COVID-19 pandemic
CPJ is calling on several UN special mandate holders to join its effort to secure the release of all jailed journalists globally in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. At least 250 journalists are behind bars for their work, according to CPJ’s most recent prison census.

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Committee to Protect Journalists calls on governments to release all journalists from their prisons. On behalf of more than 250 journalists behind bars, we call on authorities to free these political prisoners immediately and unconditionally.
For journalists jailed in countries affected by the virus, freedom is now a matter of life and death. Imprisoned journalists have no control over their surroundings, cannot choose to isolate, and are often denied necessary medical care.
The World Health Organization states that “People deprived of their liberty, and those living or working in enclosed environments in their close proximity, are likely to be more vulnerable to the COVID-19 disease than the general population.”
Global press freedom and human rights organizations are calling on world leaders to immediately release all imprisoned journalists. Add your voice to the call and sign our petition today!

With a heavy heart Poetry International has decided to postpone the Poetry International Festival 2020, which was to take place June 25-28 at the de Doelen halls in Rotterdam. We were looking forward to it very much.
Under the theme What You Will Hear Is True, we were well underway to creating a truly unforgettable 51st festival, much as we did during our successful anniversary edition in 2019, together with poets, translators, musicians, volunteers, partners, and of course the audience.
Because of the current COVID-19 crisis, and the necessary measures limiting movement that have been taken in the Netherlands and abroad, it has proven impossible to prepare a festival worthy of its participants by the end of June.

Russian activist and artist, Yulia Tsvetkova, is facing prosecution and harassment for defending women’s and LGBTI rights.
She has been under house arrest since 22 November, under absurd charges of “production and dissemination of pornography” for her drawings of the female body. She is facing up to six years in prison if convicted. Yulia Tsvetkova is a prisoner of conscience and must be immediately and unconditionally released.
Yulia Tsvetkova is an LGBTI and women’s rights activist, artist and stage director, from Komsomolsk-on-Amur, the Russian Far East.
She was detained on 20 November 2019 and put on house arrest two days later, after being charged with the “production and dissemination of pornographic materials”, for making body positive drawings of the female body and sharing them on social media.
Her drawings included pictures of female reproductive organs, and she shared them online as part of her women’s empowerment campaign.
On the day of her arrest, police searched Yulia’s apartment and the children’s educational club where she worked previously. The police seized her electronic devices, documents, and brochures on gender issues. Yulia later said that during the search police officers referred to her as a “lesbian, sex trainer and propagandist leader”.
Yulia has been the target of an overtly homophobic campaign since March 2019, when she was forced to leave Merak, the amateur youth theatre company she worked at, after police launched an investigation into alleged “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors”.
The investigation was launched in reaction to Yulia’s anti-bullying, anti-discrimination play, Blue and Pink.
On 11 December 2019 Yulia was found guilty of “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors”, and fined 50,000 rubles (approximately 600 GBP), for serving as the administrator of two LGBTI online communities on the popular Russian social media site, VKontakte.
Both of the online communities were properly marked as “18+”, as required by Russian law. Even under the confines of the homophobic Russian “gay propaganda” legislation, the “offence” should only be valid if the “propaganda” material is targeted at people under the age of 18.
On 17 January, Yulia informed the media that new proceedings had been opened against her, under the same Article of the Code of Administrative Offences that she had previously been charged under. This time she was being prosecuted for posting a drawing she made depicting two same-sex couples with child on social media, alongside the statement, “Family is where love is. Support LGBT+ families”.
She published the drawing in support of a same-sex couple who were forced to flee Russia with their adopted children after authorities threatened to remove their children from their custody.

Joni Mitchell is a Canadian singer-songwriter whose songs have helped define an era and a generation. She has received many accolades, including nine Grammy Awards, and has released 19 studio albums, including Blue in 1971. Mitchell, with roots in visual art, has designed most of her own album covers. Among her numerous honours, she was awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002 and was inducted into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2007.
The result was a handmade book, with only one hundred copies produced, filled with Joni’s hand-written lyrics and reproductions of many of her stunning drawings — portraits, abstracts, random concertgoers, and more.
Each was given to a friend and, until now, the edition has remained private. Today, with Morning Glory on the Vine, Joni’s long-ago personal Christmas present is a present to us all.

In 1971, as her album Blue topped charts around the world, Joni Mitchell crafted one hundred copies of Morning Glory on the Vine as a holiday gift for her closest friends. For this stunningly beautiful book, Joni hand-wrote an exquisite selection of her own lyrics and poems and illustrated them with more than thirty of her original paintings and watercolors. Hand-crafted, signed, and numbered in Los Angeles, the existing copies of this labor of love have rarely been seen in the past half-century.
Now, as Joni celebrates her seventy-fifth birthday, Morning Glory on the Vine: Early Songs and Drawings is available widely for the first time. In this faithfully reproduced facsimile edition, Joni’s best-loved lyrics and poems spill across the pages in her own elegant script. In the early 1970s I used to carry a sketchbook around with me everywhere I went. I drew with colored pens. Once when I was sketching my audience in Central Park, they had to drag me onto the stage. After a while I had quite a collection of drawings. The drawings were becoming more important to me than the music at that time.
I had put the drawings into a ring binder accompanied by hand-written lyrics. Elliot Roberts, my manager, and David Geffen, my agent, took my binder of drawings and lyrics and had a limited edition of books made up.
It’s been a long time coming in making this book public, but we’re publishing it now. Work is meant to be seen, or heard, as the case may be.

Tilburg is bij uitstek een stad van samenwerking. Aan de basis van het bloeiende culturele klimaat in deze stad bewegen zich talloze kunstenaars uit allerlei richtingen die met elkaar samenwerken, elkaar motiveren en inspireren. Hard nodig in deze tijd, waarin het voor nogal wat kunstenaars een kwestie van overleven is.
Ondanks uiteenlopende verschillen in hun werk hebben Niko de Wit en Sjon Brands elkaar gevonden. De Wit’s beelden zijn abstracter en doortrokken van elementaire vormen, Brands’ werk is herkenbaar aan onderdelen en eerder surrealistisch als geheel. Desondanks hebben zij elkaar getroffen in eenzelfde speelse gezindheid bij het maken van beelden.
De tentoonstelling ‘Homo Ludens’ draait om de spelende mens, spelen als noodzakelijke voorwaarde voor beschaving, cultuur en kunst. Johan Huizinga’s magistrale werk ‘Homo Ludens’, onderscheidde de spelende mens als tegenhanger van de denkende mens (homo sapiens) en de werkende mens (homo faber).
Hij benoemde spelen als fundament ván onze cultuur, als een ode aan vrijheid, alleen in vrijheid kan spel zich ontplooien en cultuur zich ontwikkelen. Spelen vereist, volgens Huizinga, concentratie, doelgerichte aandacht en vrijheid van beslommeringen. Onze hedendaagse samenleving met zijn massamedia verwart en versnippert daarentegen denken en activiteit, is niet meer in staat voor zichzelf een grote vorm of een leidend ideaal te vinden. Voor beide kunstenaars in deze expositie is spelen derhalve een ‘conditio sine qua non’ voor onderzoeken, ontdekken, oorspronkelijkheid, èn plezier.
Niko de Wit
Beeldhouwer Niko de Wit (Bergen op Zoom, 1948) viert dit jaar zijn vijftigjarig jubileum als beeldhouwer en is vooral bekend van zijn architecturale en monumentale werken. In Tilburg de ‘Dansende Schilpadden’ in de Muzentuin en de ‘Poort’ op Carré. Hoewel deze werken soms wat ernstig ogen, kenmerkt Niko’s ontwerpproces bovengenoemde grondhouding: spelen. Hij combineert inhoudelijk niet bij elkaar horende artefacten tot nieuwe, wat vervreemding oproepende, beelden. Via spelen met vormen, omkeren en experimenteren met gietprocessen. Als hij vertelt over zijn nieuwe oeuvre aan kleinschalige verrassende beelden in brons danst het plezier in zijn ogen.
Sjon Brands
Sjon Brands (Tilburg, 1948) is beeldend kunstenaar en maakt beelden uit gebruiksvoorwerpen en speelgoed, zoals dadaïstisiche paradijsvogels, grote flamboyante luchtschepen, ready-mades en satirische installaties van (protesterende) Barbie’s. Hij werkt niet vanuit vooraf bedachte concepten, zijn werk ontstaat uit het spelen met (onderdelen van) objecten die hij in de loop van de tijd heeft gevonden, verzameld of gekregen, uit het eindeloos combineren van verschillende vormen, omkeren, anders proberen, heel veel kijken en ook toeval. Spelen dus.

Brought together for the first time, here are 100 pieces of ‘Oulipo’ writing, celebrating the literary group who revelled in maths problems, puzzles, trickery, wordplay and conundrums.
Featuring writers including Georges Perec, Raymond Queneau and Italo Calvino, it includes poems, short stories, word games and even recipes. Philip Terry is a translator, and a writer of fiction and poetry. He has translated the work of Georges Perec, Stéphane Mallarmé and Raymond Queneau, and is the author of the novel tapestry, shortlisted for the Goldsmiths Prize.

JOHNNY CASH (1932–2003) was an American icon and country music superstar. He performed everywhere from Folsom State Prison to the White House. In 1980 he became the youngest living person to be chosen for the Country Music Hall of Fame; he was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1977, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992, and the Gospel Music Hall of Fame in 2010. A recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors as well as the National Medal of Arts, he won nineteen Grammy Awards, four of them posthumously.
PAUL MULDOON is the author of twelve collections of verse, including Moy Sand and Gravel, for which he won the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. He is the Howard G. B. Clark Professor at Princeton University, and between 1999 and 2004 he was Professor of Poetry at Oxford. Since 2007, Muldoon has been poetry editor of The New Yorker. He is a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and of the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

In 2020 organiseert het Museum voor Schone Kunsten (MSK) Gent de grootste Jan van Eyck-tentoonstelling ooit. Wereldwijd zijn er van deze Vlaamse meester slechts een twintigtal werken bewaard. Zeker de helft daarvan reist naar ons museum. Hier worden ze samengebracht met werk uit Van Eycks atelier en kopieën van intussen verdwenen schilderijen. Maar ook met meer dan 100 topstukken uit de late middeleeuwen. Daarvoor worden maar liefst 13 museumzalen heringericht.
Het Museum voor Schone Kunsten (MSK) in Gent is een museum voor jong en oud. Het is een levendige ontmoetingsplaats waar je kunst van de Middeleeuwen tot vandaag ontdekt in een unieke omgeving. Tijdens de tentoonstelling ‘Van Eyck. Een optische revolutie’ maken we de Middeleeuwse kunst van Van Eyck en zijn getalenteerde tijdgenoten tastbaar in het nu. Iedereen komt dichterbij Van Eyck dan ooit en ontdekt zo hoe revolutionair Van Eyck toen was en hoe belangrijk hij nu nog steeds is.
