Festival littéraire de la ville de Paris, Paris En Toutes Lettres est fondé sur les hybridations entre les genres littéraires et les formes artistiques, ainsi que sur les résonances entre la géographie parisienne et sa vie littéraire. À partir de la Maison de la Poésie-Scène littéraire, il se déploie dans une quinzaine de lieux alentours.
Revisitant l’actualité littéraire, le festival fait aussi la part belle aux créations mettant en regard littérature et musique. Parmi plus de cinquante lectures, rencontres ou concerts littéraires, on trouve également d’insolites conférences et de curieuses performances. À travers ce foisonnement de lieux et de propositions, c’est à un Paris vivant et traversé de littérature que le festival donne voix.

During the late 1960s, throughout the 1970s, and into the 1980s, New York City poets and musicians played together, published each other, and inspired one another to create groundbreaking art.
In “Do You Have a Band?”, Daniel Kane reads deeply across poetry and punk music to capture this compelling exchange and its challenge to the status of the visionary artist, the cultural capital of poetry, and the lines dividing sung lyric from page-bound poem.
Kane reveals how the new sounds of proto-punk and punk music found their way into the poetry of the 1960s and 1970s downtown scene, enabling writers to develop fresh ideas for their own poetics and performance styles. Likewise, groups like The Fugs and the Velvet Underground drew on writers as varied as William Blake and Delmore Schwartz for their lyrics. Drawing on a range of archival materials and oral interviews, Kane also shows how and why punk musicians drew on and resisted French Symbolist writing, the vatic resonance of the Beat chant, and, most surprisingly and complexly, the New York Schools of poetry. In bringing together the music and writing of Richard Hell, Patti Smith, and Jim Carroll with readings of poetry by Anne Waldman, Eileen Myles, Ted Berrigan, John Giorno, and Dennis Cooper, Kane provides a fascinating history of this crucial period in postwar American culture and the cultural life of New York City.
Daniel Kane is reader in English and American literature at the University of Sussex in Brighton. His books include We Saw the Light: Conversations Between the New American Cinema and Poetry (2009) and All Poets Welcome: The Lower East Side Poetry Scene in the 1960s (2003).

Gedichtendag, sinds 2000 georganiseerd door Poetry International Rotterdam, is hét poëziefeest van Nederland en Vlaanderen. Poëzieliefhebbers in Nederland en Vlaanderen organiseren die dag een grote diversiteit aan eigen poëzieactiviteiten en ook de media klinken die dag een stuk poëtischer.
Voor de enorme hoeveelheid optredens, publicaties, poëzieprijzen, -programma’s en -activiteiten is één dag simpelweg veel te kort!

Incubate is the annual celebration of cutting-edge culture. It is a festival exhibiting a diverse view on indie culture as a whole, including music, visual arts, film and contemporary theater, and a conference. For the upcoming December edition it brings more than 40+ cutting edge artists in an intimate context to an international audience. Black metal next to free jazz. Refreshing art next to innovating indie games.

Incubate Zero is the part of the programme that is FREE for all to attend. A little taste of the festival so you can decide if you want more. After the success of the previous Incubate Zero programmes, we’re proud to host another free offering of artists. So make sure to bring your friends and family and check out these acts!
On December 11th, everyone can enjoy some of the best new acts from the European underground. Divided over venues Cul de Sac and Kim’s Kroeg, the following bands will perform:
Heads
HEADS. from Berlin are a loud and noisy bunch, clearly influenced by Shellac and The Jesus Lizard: the good stuff. Their first record was released by This Charming Man Records so you know this not just your average band. Come see for yourself at Cul de Sac on Sunday December 11th.
Any Other
Remember those sweet, sweet times that we call the nineties? You might, but these kids don’t because they’re way too young. They do sound like they were there though, and they do such a killer job at it we forgot all about Kim Deal or Weezer or whatever. Who are those people anyway? Any Other excel in doing their own new thing with a sound that is beloved and feels familiar.
Fake O’s
If these Groningen locals would be a black metal band they’d be considered trve kvlt without a doubt. This hardcore punk outfit sounds like they came straight from the Bay Area in the eighties and shred like they want to show Keith Morris how it’s done. Of course Keith already knows, but he’d still be into FAKE O’s.
Sven Agaath
When you think you’ve heard it all: you’re about to find out you haven’t. Sven Agaath play shoegaton (a term they probably coined themselves and for which they should receive proper recognition), a mix between shoegaze and reggaeton. They themselves call it “a mixture of Dinosaur Jr, Sean Paul, MBV and Daddy Yankee that feels urgent and natural”. Although this will probably sound horrifying to most music fans, we can assure you – it really isn’t. Sven Agaath is for everybody that likes shoegaze but also wants to dance from time to time.
The Shady Greys
The Shady Greys are an Amsterdam based dirty blues-garage duo with a nice lo-fi sound. Although using only a cajon and feet played percussions (no drums!) they’re a high energy duo with fast riffing and raw vocals.
Dead High Wire
A young band from Antwerp and Mechelen, Belgium playing a mixture of echoing postpunk and indierock. They’ve released work on Kinky Star records (La Jungle, Räpe Blossoms etc.) and Oddie Records (Teen Creeps, Mind Rays, Double Veterans etc.). These are quality labels worth a whole lot more than that ‘organic’ logo on your milk carton.
Jellephant & The Phantoms
A young guy from Arnhem named Jelle and his band called The Phantoms are psychedelic band that make us think of our fellow countrymen Yuko Yuko. With a cool, echoing lo-fi mix of psychedelica, surf and downbeat garage these kids are one of the better Dutch acts in recent years.
Wobby
Together with Tilburg natives, comic creators and founders of the small press magazine ‘Wobby’, Incubate is proud to add a Comic Fair to its December edition. This will be accompanied by an English edition of the Wobby magazine, with contributions from different artists. There will also be talks, performances and interviews, but the main event will be your chance to meet and see some of your favorite creators. Guests include Bries (BE), Sigrid Calon (NL), Charlotte Dumortier (BE), Maurice van Es (NL), Jeroen Funke (NL), KAMP HORST (NL), Knust/Extrapool (NL), Vite (BE), The Stalinskis (NL), Tieten Met Haar (BE), and Ward Zwart (BE).
Holzapfel
Incubate will finalize its two-year visual arts program Do It With Others with a special performance by German artist Olaf Holzapfel. Holzapfel is a multidisciplinary artist who has extended his practice of painting with photography, sculptures, installations and digital work. To create his architectural sculptures, Holzapfel uses a range of (often locally sourced) materials, from plastic to straw. On Saturday 10th of December Holzapfel will do a special performance with a group of participants and craftsmen, around the noble art of rope making. Making a rope from straw is a complex process, a traditional craft that few still master. Tilburg is known for its history in textiles and the use of flax and hemp, as traditionally hemp was grown for processing into rope. As Incubate always connects artists with visitors and history with contemporary art, we invite all those interested to join us and Holzapfel in this special performance.
Incubate Art Symposium
At Incubate we try to offer kicks and contemplation right next to each other. We like to learn new things while having fun; about music and art and all the wonderful things that come with it. This is why we’re delighted to host the Do It With Others symposium on December 11th at Duvelhok. Following the finissage of Olaf Holzapfel’s project the day before, the symposium will include several artists that contributed to Do It With Others over the recent years. They will be interviewed by some very interesting hosts from the Dutch contemporary art scene, discussing their past residencies and collaborative work produced in Tilburg. Make sure to catch these afternoon talks if you’re curious to meet these artists in person and ask them your questions.

Bloomsbury Festival 2016 London October 19 to 23 october
For hundreds of years, Bloomsbury has been catalyst for ideas that have had impact across the world. Bloomsbury Festival celebrates contemporary Bloomsbury; a hotbed of creativity and pioneering development which has one of the youngest and most diverse populations in the country.
For five days in October, Bloomsbury will be full to the brim with artistic, scientific and literary events for all ages and tastes, from breakfast until late in the evenings taking place in the streets, parks, museums, galleries, laboratories and public and (normally) private buildings of this vibrant cultural quarter. There will be over 150 events created with over 100 partners.
Inspired by the centenary of SOAS and with Bloomsbury residents reflecting one of highest levels of diversity in the UK, the theme selected for this year’s festival is Language. Language comes in many forms; speech, symbols, non-verbal communication, performance language, dance notation, morse code, sign language, computer code. Language will be explored throughout all the events; from the cuneiform inscriptions on tablets of clay at the British Museum inspiring a collaboration by an artist and historian, to investigations of Legal and medical ‘languages’ that are used in many firms and laboratories and hospitals in Bloomsbury.
Baroness Valerie Amos, Director of SOAS says: ‘As we celebrate 100 years of SOAS teaching and research, we are delighted that the Bloomsbury Festival’s theme this year is dedicated to language. SOAS is a special place with its unique blend of languages, regional and discipline expertise. We are proud of our Bloomsbury location and, with the addition of Senate House North Block, the growth of our Bloomsbury Campus. As we look forward to the next 100 years, we will continue to play a central role in the cultural and creative life of the area.’
Kate Anderson, Bloomsbury Festival director says ‘Bloomsbury Festival is unique, as is the area of Bloomsbury in which leading institutions and world-class creative organisations rub shoulders with primary schools and lawyers. We make the Festival with over 100 Bloomsbury partners, providing opportunities for unusual collaborations and development opportunities for all. The result is a very distinctive festival indeed! And with over 150 events including all art forms, science, architecture, walks, technology, outdoor music, debating and hubs focusing on families, I think we can safely say there is something for everyone at Bloomsbury Festival.
A few of this year’s headline events include Coram’s Songs, a promenade performance set in the known and secret spaces around the Foundling Hospital. 2016 marks the 275th anniversary of the Foundling Hospital and the 80th anniversary of Coram’s Fields. Created by director Emma Bernard in partnership with renowned composers including Jocelyn Pook, Orlando Gough, Michael Henry and Melanie Pappenheim, Coram’s Songs is inspired by this unique seven acre, greenfield site in central London that has been preserved as a sanctuary for children for circa 300 years.
Step Out Store Street will be a night-time street party with a twist: the street will be transformed by an array of artists and dancers, showcasing and teaching different dance disciplines from around the world, from Bollywood to BBoy and Swing to Line dancing. Pa-BOOM’s fiery pyrotechnic art installations will make a welcome return and the event will also feature a premiere of a new street dance commission from acclaimed dancer Tony Adigun’s Avant Garde Youth Dance Company. The street’s eclectic mix of boutiques, shops and restaurants will each house a different art, music and dance experience and an abundance of street food and bars will be available.
Other headline events will include The Last Whisperers at the British Museum, Calling Tree in St George’s Gardens, a specially curated programme at The Wellcome Trust, Goodensemble and ENO at Goodenough College, and SOAS’ World Music Stage inside the newly opened north block of Senate House.
The festival centres around three main hub venues Goodenough college, UCL, and Conway Hall with activities also taking place at a further 20+ satellite venues including the Wellcome Trust, the British Museum, the British Library, Pushkin House, Charles Dickens Museum, Coram’s Fields, the Music Room, Bloomsbury Hotel, the Curzon Bloomsbury, and Store Street. There will be lunchtime events Wed 19 – Fri 21 for locals and workers to attend and breakfast events and talks in local cafes.
Every year the Festival runs a competition for BA (Hons) Graphic Communication Design, Central Saint Martin’s students to design the festival logo. This year’s winning entry is by Wies van der Wal which the judges felt illustrated the theme of language, the coming together of ideas and joy of the Festival perfectly.

Kate Tempest vecht met twee wapens; haar pen en haar stem. Als artiest won ze meerdere poetry slams en bracht in 2014 als rapper haar tweede album ‘Everybody Down’ uit. Daarnaast publiceerde ze als schrijfster een dichtbundel en een roman en schreef tussendoor nog een toneelstuk. Op het podium brengt Kate Tempest verhalen tot leven met haar unieke mix van indie-hiphop vol rauwe, poëtische raps over het grauwe stadsleven in Londen. Tekstueel één van de meest interessante en urgente lyricisten van dit moment.

Writers Unlimited brengt schrijvers, dichters, denkers en wetenschappers uit de hele wereld met elkaar in gesprek over literatuur, kunst, wetenschap en samenleving. Jaarlijks in januari in het Winternachten festival en maandelijks in de Centrale Bibliotheek in Den Haag, en in het buitenland tijdens de schrijverstournees.
Tientallen internationale auteurs, grote schrijvers uit eigen land en veelbelovende nieuwkomers komen samen op Winternachten, het mooiste internationale literatuurfestival van Nederland. De belangrijkste dichter uit het Arabische taalgebied is te gast in de Schilderswijk. Adonis oefende grote invloed uit op de hedendaagse Arabische cultuur en hij wordt bewonderd om zijn klassieke stijl, gebaseerd op de traditionele Arabische dichters, zijn moderne ideeën en zijn kritische geluid over de Arabische samenleving. Niets mooiers dan elkaar verhalen vertellen. Vanmiddag verhalen van de dichters Runa Svetlikova en Rodaan al Galidi, van studenten van de Haagse Hogeschool, van de winnaars van de verhalenwedstrijd van Theater Dakota en van het publiek. Dramadocente Martine Zeeman begeleidde de studenten van de Haagse Hogeschool. Het thema is ‘Met de Beste Bedoelingen’. Heeft u zelf een verhaal van vijf minuten dat past in het thema? Presentator Francis Broekhuijsen nodigt u van harte uit om mee te doen!

NRC Leesclub live: ‘Lucifer’ van Connie Palmen
Een traditie op het festival, de NRC Leesclub live. Het panel, met daarin NRC-medewerkers Margot Dijkgraaf, Arjen Fortuin en Toef Jaeger, bespreekt onder leiding van chef boeken Michel Krielaars Lucifer (2007) van Connie Palmen. In deze filosofische whodunit valt de vrouw van componist Lucas Loos in de zomer van 1981 op een Grieks eiland in een diepe afgrond. Vijfentwintig jaar later gaat de ik-figuur op onderzoek uit. Via de kleurrijke personages die het Amsterdam van de jaren tachtig bevolkten, stuit ze op onverwachte bronnen. Was deze dood al jarenlang aangekondigd in een muzikaal oeuvre of was haar val een verschrikkelijk ongeluk? Niet voor niets draagt de roman een citaat uit ‘Sympathy for the Devil’ van de Rolling Stones als motto: ‘But what’s confusing you / is just the nature of my game’.
Iedereen is welkom bij deze bijeenkomst en uiteraard kunt u, de lezer van het boek, uw steentje bijdragen in de discussie. Aansluitend kunt u het programma bezoeken waarin Connie Palmen wordt geïnterviewd door Anna Luyten.

Anna Luyten in gesprek met Connie Palmen
“Alle grote literatuur gaat over de strijd tegen het kwaad.” Het zijn woorden die Connie Palmen in haar meest recente roman, Jij zegt het, in de mond legt van de dichter Ted Hughes, een fictieve autobiografie van de dichter die 35 jaar lang zweeg nadat zijn vrouw, dichteres Sylvia Plath, in 1963 zelfmoord pleegde. Maar hoe kan Palmens personage de strijd tegen het kwade voeren terwijl hij zich ervan bewust is dat in het hart van de liefde geweld en vernietiging schuilen? Als in een liefdesrelatie destructie en creatie afwisselend de boventoon voeren? Als in hem zelf het rationele telkens met het dierlijke strijdt? Heeft strijden überhaupt wel zin als alles in de sterren ligt besloten? In een vraaggesprek met Anna Luyten gaat Connie Palmen in op deze dilemma’s. Hoe ziet zij zelf de verhouding tot de werkelijkheid van een verhaal als dat van Hughes?

Leesclub Wim Brands: ‘Vrouw’ van Karl Ove Knausgård
Wim Brands (VPRO Boeken) gaat met het publiek in gesprek over Vrouw, het laatste deel uit de serie Mijn strijd van de Noorse schrijver Karl Ove Knausgård. Maar eerst geven filosofe Stine Jensen en schrijver Jamal Ouariachi hun ongezouten mening in een gesproken recensie. In Mijn strijd gaat Karl Ove Knausgård (1968) het dagelijks gevecht aan met zijn leven als vader, zoon en echtgenoot. In het eerste deel, Vader, voert de hoofdpersoon strijd met zijn overleden alcoholische vader, in deel 2, Liefde, wordt Knausgård zelf vader en moet hij strijd leveren met zijn vrouw Linda en hun kinderen. In de delen 3 en 4, Zoon en Nacht, beschrijft hij hoe hij opgroeide en leraar werd, in deel 5, Schrijver, worstelt hij met schrijven, liefde, ontrouw en jaloezie. Nu is deel 6 verschenen: Vrouw, waarin hij terugkijkt op zijn literaire project, zich afvraagt of hij wel zo open over zichzelf en zijn familie had mogen schrijven, essayeert over literatuur, geschiedenis en Het Kwaad, en schrijft over zijn manisch-depressieve vrouw.
Voorafgaand kunt u het Engelstalige programma bezoeken, waarin Karl Ove Knausgård wordt geïnterviewd door Wim Brands. Er is ook een signeersessie met de schrijver, om 13:45 uur.
De gevarieerde zaterdagavond vormt (met de vrijdagavond) het hart van het festival. In tientallen programma’s op vijf podia komen schrijvers, dichters en bezoekers samen in een feestelijke, informele sfeer. De auteurs dragen voor uit werk dat zij in opdracht van het festival schreven, lezen voor uit hun boeken of gaan met elkaar in gesprek over actuele thema’s. Er zijn zowel Engelstalige- als Nederlandstalige programma’s, waardoor een ‘Language No Problem’ route door de avond mogelijk is. Op zaterdagavond houdt de Amerikaanse filosofe Susan Neiman de Winternachtenlezing, over de omgang met zwarte bladzijden in het verleden. De Vlaamse zanger Helmut Lotti treedt op met op muziek gezette poëzie. Voorts te gast Alaa al Aswani (Egypte), José Eduardo Agualusa (Angola/Portugal), Joanna Bator (Polen), Adriaan van Dis, György Dragomán (Hongarije), Slavenka Drakulić (Kroatië/Zweden), Rodaan Al Galidi, Petina Gappah (Zimbabwe), Daan Heerma van Voss, Andrej Koerkov (Rusland/Oekraïne), Geert Mak, Neel Mukherjee (GB/India), Connie Palmen, Frank Westerman en vele anderen. Een van de best beluisterde programma’s van Radio 1 is VPRO’s OVT. Elke zondagmorgen staat de actualiteit van de geschiedenis centraal. Inmiddels is het een traditie dat de programmamakers ten tijde van het festival verhuizen naar Den Haag, dit keer om live uit te zenden vanuit de gezellige foyer van Theater aan het Spui. Reken op bijdragen van festivalgasten Adriaan van Dis en Rodaan Al Galidi. De Vlaamse zanger Helmut Lotti treedt op en natuurlijk is er de gesproken column van Nelleke Noordervliet. Zij maakt – als lid van de jury – ook de winnaar bekend van de Erasmusprijs 2016, de prestigieuze Europese oeuvreprijs die dit jaar aan een een schrijver wordt toegekend. De presentatie is in handen van Paul van der Gaag en Jos Palm. Publiek is van harte welkom, de toegang is vrij – wel even reserveren via www.writersunlimited.nl
Een feestelijk programma rond de uitreiking van de Jan Campert-prijzen, de literatuurprijzen van de gemeente Den Haag. We vieren de Nederlandse literatuur met diverse optredens van schrijvers, dichters en musici. Rodaan Al Galidi opent het programma met een gedicht. Michael Krüger, dichter en voormalig uitgever van vele Nederlandse auteurs bij Hanser Verlag in Berlijn, geeft zijn visie op ‘De Staat van de Nederlandse letteren’. Vervolgens reikt Joris Wijsmuller, wethouder voor cultuur van de gemeente Den Haag, de prijzen uit. Ilja Leonard Pfeijffer ontvangt de Jan Campert-prijs voor zijn poëziebundel Idyllen. Femke Halsema houdt een lofrede voor hem. Annelies Verbeke krijgt de F. Bordewijk-prijs voor haar roman Dertig Dagen. Kora-speler Lamin Kuyateh vertolkt een ‘praise song’ voor haar. De prijs voor jeugdliteratuur – de Nynke van Hichtum-prijs – gaat naar Anna Woltz voor de roman Honderd uur nacht. Edward van de Vendel zwaait haar lof toe. De middag culmineert in de uitreiking van de Constantijn Huygens-prijs voor een geheel oeuvre, die dit jaar wordt uitgereikt aan Adriaan van Dis, geliefd schrijver en festivalvriend van het eerste uur. Hij wordt toegesproken door een groot bewonderaar, Job Cohen, en toegezongen door Typhoon. Een programma in samenwerking met de Jan Campert-stichting / Letterkundig Museum en het Nederlands Letterenfonds.

De Kunsthal Rotterdam presenteert dit najaar een grootse tentoonstelling rondom het leven en werk van de invloedrijke Amerikaanse kunstenaar en activist Keith Haring (1958-1990).‘Keith Haring. The Political Line’ is de eerste tentoonstelling in Nederland die uitvoerig ingaat op de sociale en politieke aspecten van zijn levenswerk. Honderdtwintig kunstwerken laten een onderbelichte kant van de wereldberoemde kunstenaar zien. Het persoonlijk ervaren van de imposante kunstwerken is een visueel spektakel met grote impact. Vijfentwintig jaar na Harings dood heeft zijn kunst nog niets aan zeggenschap verloren.

Met zijn gewaagde, onmiskenbaar eigen stijl ontketent Keith Haring, een protegé van Andy Warhol, een revolutie in de kunst van de jaren tachtig. In New York, tijdens het conservatisme van Reagan, ziet de openlijk homoseksuele Haring het als zijn missie om door middel van zijn kunst maatschappelijke misstanden aan de kaak te stellen. Hij neemt stelling tegen de uitwassen van het kapitalisme en zet zich in voor nucleaire ontwapening, milieubescherming en gelijke rechten voor iedereen, ongeacht afkomst, huidskleur, religie of seksuele geaardheid. De thematische opstelling van de kunstwerken in ‘The Political Line’ toont, samen met dagboekfragmenten en ander archiefmateriaal, hoe toegewijd Haring zich inzet voor sociale en politieke vraagstukken in zijn tijd.
Geïnspireerd door de straatcultuur: Keith Haring is toonaangevend in de New Yorkse ‘down town’ gemeenschap van jonge schilders, performers en muzikanten die haar creativiteit ontleent aan de urban straatcultuur. Haring laat zich inspireren door graffiti, strips, muziek, dans en zowel de ‘hoge’ kunst als de ‘populaire’ cultuur. Haring beschouwt kunst als publiek recht en publiek bezit. De veel bekritiseerde commercialisering van zijn eigen werken op T-shirts, badges of stickers is een integraal onderdeel van zijn filosofie “Kunst is er voor iedereen”. De invloed van Haring op zijn generatie is enorm. En hoewel zijn carrière slechts een decennium duurde, is het effect van zijn beeldtaal onverminderd.
Veel werken in ‘The Political Line’ zijn bruiklenen van de Keith Haring Foundation in New York, aangevuld met belangrijke werken uit internationale musea en privé collecties. De diversiteit van Harings werk reikt van de vroege krijttekeningen, in situ gemaakt in de New Yorkse metro stations – de ‘subway drawings’ – tot zijn grootschalige schilderijen op canvas en vinyl zeildoek, talloze werken in Sumi inkt op papier, unieke objecten en sculpturen. Documentaire-materiaal maakt het beeld van kunstenaar en activist Keith Haring compleet.
Kunsthal directeur Emily Ansenk benadrukt: “We zijn enorm blij dat deze tentoonstelling juist in Rotterdam plaatsvindt, de stad waar Keith Haring in 1982 zijn allereerste expositie buiten de USA had. Zijn hele carrière hield Keith Haring vast aan zijn ambitie om zijn werk toegankelijk te laten zijn voor iedereen. Niet alleen voor de kunstwereld. Hij zette alle beschikbare kanalen in om zijn werk te delen. Daarom is de Kunsthal Rotterdam de beste plek in Nederland voor deze tentoonstelling. Hier maken we zijn werk toegankelijk voor een breed en nieuw publiek.”
De tentoonstelling is een samenwerking tussen de Kunsthal Rotterdam, Kunsthalle der Hypo-Kulturstiftung in München, gastcurator dr. Dieter Buchhart en de Keith Haring Foundation in New York. ‘The Political Line’ is gebaseerd op de gelijknamige tentoonstelling in het Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris en Le Centquatre (2013) en het Fine Arts Museum in San Francisco (2014, de Young Museum). Speciaal voor de Kunsthal is de tentoonstelling aangevuld met materiaal over Harings bezoeken aan Nederland.
Over Keith Haring: Keith Haring, geboren in Reading, Pennsylvania, groeide op in het nabijgelegen Kutztown. Vanaf zijn komst naar New York, waar hij de School of Visual Arts bezoekt (1980), is hij geïnspireerd door de bloeiende ‘downtown’ cultuur die zich buiten de musea en galeries ontwikkelt, waaronder de levendige gay-gemeenschap. Haring is een geschoold en geëngageerd kunstenaar, gegrepen door de energie en spirit van de scene waarin hij zich bevindt, samen met vele inspirerende tijdgenoten als Jean-Michel Basquiat, Francesco Clemente, George Condo, Eric Haze, Crash, LA II, Kenny Scharf, John Ahearn en Rammellzee. Zijn werklust en zijn passie voor het creëren in de openbare ruimte brengen hem tot het organiseren van en participeren in tentoonstellingen en live performances. Zo kleedt hij Madonna en bodypaint hij Grace Jones in de fameuze Paradise Garage nachtclub. Ook is hij geïnspireerd door het werk van zijn voorgangers waaronder Picasso, Leger, Stuart Davis, Jean Dubuffet, Pierre Alechinsky en William Burroughs. En door het publieke en participerende werk van Christo en de unieke symbiose van kunst en leven van Andy Warhol.
Keith Haring is vastbesloten zijn carrière te wijden aan het creëren van waarachtige public art. Zijn werk wordt in de jaren 1980 in meer dan honderd solotentoonstellingen getoond en hij voltooit meer dan vijftig muurschilderingen in tientallen steden over de hele wereld, waarvan vele in ziekenhuizen en kindertehuizen. Op het moment van zijn overlijden aan aids gerelateerde complicaties, op 31-jarige leeftijd, heeft Haring internationale faam bereikt. Niet alleen als kunstenaar maar ook als activist. In de laatste jaren van zijn leven zet hij zijn bekendheid in om aandacht te krijgen voor de strijd tegen aids en spreekt hij openlijk over zijn HIV infectie om het stigma rond deze ziekte te helpen verminderen. In 1989 richt hij de Keith Haring Foundation op. In overeenstemming met Harings duidelijke filantropische doelstellingen, ondersteunt de Keith Haring Foundation tot op de dag van vandaag organisaties die educatieve mogelijkheden bieden aan kansarme kinderen en organisaties die zich inzetten voor onderwijs, preventie en zorg met betrekking tot aids en HIV-infectie. Over de Kunsthal Rotterdam: De Kunsthal Rotterdam is een van de toonaangevende culturele instellingen in Nederland, gelegen in het Museumpark in Rotterdam. Het Amsterdam Museum ‘Graffiti. New York meets the Dam’. Voor het eerst in Nederland is er een tentoonstelling te zien die compleet is gewijd aan New Yorkse en Amsterdamse graffiti uit de jaren ’70 en ’80. Voor deze tentoonstelling werkt het Amsterdam Museum nauw samen met The Museum of the City of New York.
De tentoonstelling focust op de jaren ’70 en ’80 en laat zien hoe bekende Amsterdamse graffitikunstenaars zoals Shoe en Delta werden beïnvloed door Amerikaanse artiesten als Dondi en Keith Haring. Naast topstukken uit collecties van privé-verzamelaars en het Museum of the City of New York worden ook persoonlijke bezittingen van graffitikunstenaars getoond, waaronder schetsboeken, kledingstukken en foto’s uit eigen archief. Op deze manier wordt de ontwikkeling duidelijk van graffiti als straatfenomeen naar geaccepteerde kunststroming. ‘Graffiti. New York meets the Dam’ laat daarnaast zien hoe dertig jaar geleden een jonge generatie het straatbeeld veranderde waarvan de invloed nog altijd merkbaar is binnen muziek, fashion en onze hedendaagse beeldcultuur.
Voor de tentoonstelling ‘Graffiti. New York meets the Dam’ komt een deel van de New Yorkse tentoonstelling ‘City as Canvas: Graffiti Art from the Martin Wong Collection’ naar het Amsterdam Museum. De collectie van Wong (1946 – 1999) bevat naast Haring ook unieke werken van andere bekende New Yorkse namen zoals Cey Adams, Futura 2000 en Daze. Wong herkende de kunst van graffiti nog voor dit maatschappelijk was geaccepteerd en wist zo een unieke collectie tot stand te brengen. De tentoonstelling City as Canvas: Graffiti Art from the Martin Wong Collection is ontwikkeld door The Museum of the City of New York en gecureerd door Sean Corcoran, conservator prints en fotografie. Aileen Middel (Mick la Rock) is als gast-conservator betrokken bij ‘Graffiti. New York meets the Dam’.

Verzen Versus Verzen brengt hiphop en poëzie tijdens cultuurnacht in de Hall of Fame Tilburg
Tijdens de cultuurnacht op zaterdag 24 oktober vindt in de Hall of Fame Verzen Versus Verzen plaats, met daarin de stedelijke finale van de Tilburgse Poetry Slam Podiumvlees. Maar dat is niet het enige, want speciaal voor de Tilburgse cultuurnacht slaan Hall Of Fame, Podiumvlees en artiestenbureau To The Max de handen ineen om Poetry en Hiphop bij elkaar te brengen. Deze twee stromingen hebben veel raakvlakken met elkaar. Dat betekent dat u niet alleen kunt kijken en luisteren naar poëzie, maar ook naar een aantal getalenteerde hiphop en spoken word acts. Verzen Versus Verzen begint om 20 uur en de toegang is gratis. De Hall of Fame is gevestigd aan de Burgemeester Bokxlaan 6 in Tilburg.
In de tweede Stedelijke Finale van Podiumvlees gaan de winnaars van de vier voorrondes, Yannick Moyson, Kevin Amse, Von Solo en Glenn Markesteyn de strijd met elkaar aan. Op het spel staat een plaats in het Nederlands Kampioenschap Poetry Slam, dat in januari 2015 gehouden wordt in Utrecht. De dichters worden beoordeeld door een vakjury en een publieksjury.
Tijdens deze avond presenteert To The Max een aantal getalenteerde hiphopacts. Met Vin Arge, De Grot (foto), Steev en Hidden Village wordt er toegewerkt naar een clubnacht waarbij Yung Amadeus en Dj Bowie de tent op zijn kop zetten. Je kunt niet anders dan losgaan!
Podiumvlees is een initiatief van Stadsdichter van Tilburg Martin Beversluis en Nachtdichter Daan Taks. Zij gaan ook komend seizoen door met het organiseren van Podiumvlees.
