Museum Meermanno toont meer dan driehonderd miniatuurboekjes in de kleine, maar fijne tentoonstelling ‘Xtra small’.
Miniatuurboekjes passen in je handpalm, soms zelfs op de top van je vinger. Voor boekbinders en drukkers is het kleine formaat een uitdaging. Het is een manier om hun kunde en handvaardigheid te etaleren. En dan vereist een echt mooi miniatuurboekje naast heel veel vakmanschap ook veel creativiteit, smaak en verfijning in ontwerp en de gebruikte motieven en materialen.
Museum Meermanno bezit van oudsher een grote collectie van deze boekjes, waarvan het Bloemhofje uit 1673 wel heel bijzonder is. Maar ook veel moderne exemplaren maken deel uit van de collectie. Deze werd in 2012 drastisch uitgebreid met de Bibliotheca Thurkowiana Minor. Dat is een miniatuurbibliotheek die ook nog eens 1.550 boekjes herbergt, waaronder zelfs een miniatuurkleitablet uit 1800 voor Christus.
In de tentoonstelling ‘Xtra small’ toont het museum deze collectie waaraan zeer recent nog eens 120 unieke exemplaren zijn toegevoegd. Dat zijn de inzendingen voor de International Minature Bookbinding Competition 2017 die de Stichting Handboekbinden samen met Uitgeverij de Buitenkant en Museum Meermanno eind 2016 uitschreef. De deelnemers ontvingen daarvoor de katernen van het door Liz Waters in het Engels vertaalde verhaal ‘The Island’ van Geert Mak. De Amsterdamse kunstenaar Max Kisman maakte de illustraties. De boekjes moesten voldoen aan de zogenaamde Bondy-norm, dat wil zeggen dat ze maximaal 76.2mm hoog, breed en dik mochten zijn.
De inzendingen zijn staaltjes van toewijding en vakmanschap en ze komen uit alle delen van Europa, Canada en Noord-Amerika, China, Japan, Australië en Nieuw Zeeland.
Publicatie: Bij deze tentoonstelling verschijnt een gelijknamige Engelstalige catalogus waarin onder andere alle inzendingen voor de wedstrijd in kleur en op ware grootte zijn afgebeeld. Het door Peter Verheul vormgegeven boekje verschijnt 1 oktober bij Uitgeverij de Buitenkant. Het eeuwenoude gebied De Heilige Driehoek in het Noord-Brabantse Oosterhout vormt tijdens de 1e Biënnale Kunst in de Heilige Driehoek het decor voor hedendaagse kunst, met – in deze eerste editie – liefde als thema.
De 1e Biënnale Kunst in de Heilige Driehoek is de enige grootschalige hedendaagse kunstbiënnale in Europa die kunst en religie nadrukkelijk als uitgangspunt neemt.
Uniek kloostergebied als inspiratie én decor van hedendaagse kunst Het gebied De Heilige Driehoek – ruim 100 hectare groot – dankt zijn naam aan drie monumentale, eeuwenoude kloosters die zijn omgeven door grote kloostertuinen en landerijen: de Onze Lieve Vrouwe Abdij, De Sint-Paulusabdij en het Sint-Catharinadal. De Heilige Driehoek is de enige plek in Nederland waar nog een combinatie van drie actieve kloosters bestaat.
De Biënnale vindt plaats in de kloostergebouwen, de kloostertuinen en de kloosterkapellen, die voor het eerst worden geopend voor het grote publiek en voor hedendaagse kunst. De kunstenaars laten zich inspireren door het gebied zelf, de rijke historie en de artistiek-religieuze tradities. Veel werken zijn in opdracht van de Biënnale gemaakt en worden dan ook voor het eerst getoond. De Biënnale heeft de ambitie om de kunstzinnige tradities van de kloosters, die excelleerden in architectuur, schilderkunst, het restaureren van wandtapijten, handschriften en boeken, en kunstnijverheid, te verbinden met artistieke vernieuwing.

De Amerikaan Philip Glass kan zonder twijfel worden gerekend tot de belangrijkste componisten van de laatste vijftig jaar.
Al enkele jaren is hij een graag geziene gast hier in Melkweg. Het is namelijk alweer de vijfde keer sinds 2011. Dit jaar komt de componist wederom naar Amsterdam met zijn eigen Days And Nights Festival programma. Een festival dat is ontstaan in het Philip Glass Center for the Arts, Science, and the Environment en draait om culturele vernieuwing.
In het kader van Amsterdam Dance Event voert hij op zondag 22 oktober drie van zijn pianowerken uit. Vergezeld door Maki Namekawa en Dennis Russell Davies zijn dit ‘Mad Rush’ (1980), ‘Four Movements For Two Pianos’ (2008) en ‘The Suite from Les Enfants Terribles’ (1996).
Daarnaast presenteren het Amstel Saxophone Quartet & DJ/producer Kypski ‘Glass On The Roof’ ter gelegenheid van de 80e verjaardag van de componist. ‘Glass on the Roof’ bestaat uit drie werken waarbij de turntablist Kypski en het Quartet hun gezamenlijke sound aftasten en ontdekken.

Juliana Kálnay erzählt mit Aberwitz und aus vielen Perspektiven, es ist ein Stimmengewirr, ein Puzzle, das sich nach und nach zu einem dichten Bild fügt. Die Charaktere – Bewohner eines rätselhaften Hauses – versuchen, sich einen Reim auf die Dinge des Lebens zu machen, sich selbst und die anderen zu verstehen, tappen aber oft im Dunklen. Kálnays magischer Realismus hält die Handlung in der Schwebe, ohne ins Phantastische abzuheben, das Haus verbindet alle Elemente im Roman.
Der aspekte-Literaturpreis wird in diesem Jahr zum 39. Mal vergeben. Er ist mit 10.000 Euro dotiert und die bedeutendste Auszeichnung für deutschsprachige Erstlingsprosa. Die Preisverleihung findet am Donnerstag, 12. Oktober 2017, 11:30 Uhr im Rahmen der Frankfurter Buchmesse auf dem Blauen Sofa am ZDF-Stand statt.
Juliana Kálnay, geboren 1988 in Hamburg, wuchs zunächst in Köln und dann in Málaga auf. Sie veröffentlichte in deutsch- und spanischsprachigen Anthologien und Zeitschriften und erhielt das Arbeitsstipendium Literatur der Kulturstiftung des Landes Schleswig-Holstein 2016. Sie lebt und schreibt in Kiel. »Eine kurze Chronik des allmählichen Verschwindens« ist ihr erster Roman.

Op 21 juli 2017 was het vijftig jaar geleden dat in Wyck-Maastricht de dichter Pierre Kemp (1886-1967) overleed. Pierre Kemp, bekroond met diverse prijzen voor zijn dichterlijk oeuvre, behoort tot de grootheden van de Nederlandse poëzie uit de twintigste eeuw.
Daarnaast was hij een begenadigd tekenaar en schilder, wiens werk deel uitmaakt van de kerncollectie Limburg van het Bonnefantenmuseum.
Voor het eerst toont het Bonnefantenmuseum nu Kemps werken op papier, merendeel schetsen en studies, die dateren uit de jaren 1905 tot 1913. Een bijzonder onderdeel van de tentoonstelling is het drietal schetsboekjes dat bewaard is gebleven uit 1906–1907. Een van de boekjes wordt als facsimile uitgegeven, met een uitgebreide toelichting door Wiel Kusters, die ook optreedt als gastconservator van de tentoonstelling.
Pierre Kemp, in 1954 bekroond met de Poëzieprijs van de Gemeente Amsterdam, in 1956 met de Constantijn Huygensprijs en twee jaar later met de P.C. Hooftprijs, behoort tot de grootheden van de Nederlandse poëzie uit de twintigste eeuw. Het heeft er in Kemps jonge jaren een tijdlang naar uitgezien dat hij zijn levensvervulling zou zoeken in de schilderkunst.

Ter gelegenheid van Kemps zeventigste verjaardag, in juni van dit jaar, verscheen: Leesjongen. Verzamelde gedichten 1978-2017 (Cossee, 2017).
Ter gelegenheid van Kemps vijftigste sterfdag verschijnt in september 2017 tevens een bloemlezing uit zijn dichterlijke werk: Het regent in de trompetten – De mooiste gedichten van Pierre Kemp, van Wiel Kusters en Ingrid Wijk (Uitgeverij Vantilt, Nijmegen).
Wiel Kusters (1947) is dichter, essayist en honorair hoogleraar aan Universiteit Maastricht. Voor het Bonnefantenmuseum maakte hij in 2001 de tentoonstelling: Huisraad Onraad, oder die Dinge in der Umwelt der Fliege. In 2010 publiceerde hij de biografie Pierre Kemp. Een leven (Vantilt). Tot zijn bekendste werken van de laatste jaren behoort: In en onder het dorp. Mijnwerkersleven in Limburg (Vantilt, 2012).
