Paris Photo, première foire internationale dédiée à la photographie, se déroulera du 9 au 12 novembre 2017, au Grand Palais.
Avec 180 exposants annoncés pour le secteur principal, l’édition 2017 sera marquée par une programmation ambitieuse et inédite, présentant le meilleur du médium photographique dans toute sa diversité.
Pour cette 21ème édition, Paris Photo dévoile une première sélection de 149 galeries et 31 éditeurs en provenance de 31 pays. 31 nouvelles galeries et 5 éditeurs spécialisés dans le livre photographique rejoignent Paris Photo cette année.
Pour la troisième année consécutive, le secteur PRISMES, dédié aux installations, aux œuvres sérielles et de grands formats dévoilera 14 projets d’envergure, dans le Salon d’Honneur du Grand Palais.
Paris Photo inaugure cette année une section FILM/VIDÉO, explorant les nouvelles perspectives qu’offre l’image, en partenariat avec le MK2 (Grand Palais).
Invité d’Honneur de cette 21ème édition, Karl Lagerfeld proposera aux visiteurs de Paris Photo un parcours spécial de la foire intitulé
« Paris Photo vu par Karl Lagerfeld ». Ce parcours fera l’objet d’une publication dédiée.

Het Wintertuinfestival, dat van 22 tot en met 26 november plaatsvindt in Nijmegen, heeft dit jaar als titel: De vrije lezer
Tientallen schrijvers, dichters, wetenschappers, muzikanten en kunstenaars – onder wie Adriaan van Dis, Fresku en Kamagurka – gaan in op dit thema. Zowel grote literaire namen als aanstormende talenten reizen af naar Nijmegen. Op diverse locaties in de binnenstad zijn programma’s en activiteiten. Het hele festivalprogramma staat online en de kaartverkoop loopt via wintertuinfestival.nl
Op woensdag 22 november bespreken middelbare scholieren tijdens Lezen met de Sterren het boek Dit is geen dagboek met Erna Stassen. ’s Avonds is er een kroegcollege: Roel Smeets, promovendus bij Algemene Cultuurwetenschappen, gaat in op het festivalthema.
Op donderdag 23 november geeft niemand minder dan Fresku een college op de Radboud Universiteit.
Op vrijdag 24 november vindt er een Avond van de grote beloftes plaats, waarop talenten uit de stal van De Nieuwe Oost centraal staan. Simone Atangana Bekono, Marjolein Visser, Nikki Dekker en Jante Wortel tonen nieuw werk.
Op zaterdag 25 november kun je overdag meedoen met twee schrijfworkshops. ’s Avonds wordt Doornroosje omgetoverd tot een literair walhalla. Tijdens de grootse festivalavond gaan talloze gasten in op het thema, waaronder Adriaan van Dis, Kamagurka, Franca Treur, Erik Jan Harmens, Alma Mathijsen, Anousha Nzume en Jet Steinz.
Het Wintertuinfestival wordt afgesloten met de boekpresentatie van Een botsing op het spoor van Joris van Casteren. Het boek gaat over een fatale botsing die een jaar geleden bij een spoorovergang in Nijmegen plaatsvond. Gedurende het hele festival is Nina Polak Writer in Residence en is er in de bibliotheek een Virtual Reality-installatie te bezichtigen.
Het verkrijgen van informatie is de goudkoorts van deze tijd. Bedrijven als Facebook en Google willen alles van ons weten, van ons reisgedrag en onze kledingsmaak tot onze politieke voorkeuren. Als een rots in de branding van de algoritmes en cookies staat de vrije lezer. Hij of zij vindt nieuwe ideeën, andere werelden, en schatten aan niet in kaart te brengen informatie in boeken. Je zou kunnen zeggen dat lezen van boeken in deze tijd een daad van verzet is, dat boeken een bastion van vrijheid zijn, en dat de lezer een activist is.

As these companies have expanded, marketing themselves as champions of individuality and pluralism, their algorithms have pressed us into conformity and laid waste to privacy. They have produced an unstable and narrow culture of misinformation, and put us on a path to a world without private contemplation, autonomous thought, or solitary introspection–a world without mind. In order to restore our inner lives, we must avoid being coopted by these gigantic companies, and understand the ideas that underpin their success.
Elegantly tracing the intellectual history of computer science–from Descartes and the enlightenment to Alan Turing to Stuart Brand and the hippie origins of today’s Silicon Valley–Foer exposes the dark underpinnings of our most idealistic dreams for technology. The corporate ambitions of Google, Facebook, Apple, and Amazon, he argues, are trampling longstanding liberal values, especially intellectual property and privacy. This is a nascent stage in the total automation and homogenization of social, political, and intellectual life. Het eeuwenoude gebied De Heilige Driehoek in het Noord-Brabantse Oosterhout vormt tijdens de 1e Biënnale Kunst in de Heilige Driehoek het decor voor hedendaagse kunst, met – in deze eerste editie – liefde als thema.
De 1e Biënnale Kunst in de Heilige Driehoek is de enige grootschalige hedendaagse kunstbiënnale in Europa die kunst en religie nadrukkelijk als uitgangspunt neemt.
Uniek kloostergebied als inspiratie én decor van hedendaagse kunst Het gebied De Heilige Driehoek – ruim 100 hectare groot – dankt zijn naam aan drie monumentale, eeuwenoude kloosters die zijn omgeven door grote kloostertuinen en landerijen: de Onze Lieve Vrouwe Abdij, De Sint-Paulusabdij en het Sint-Catharinadal. De Heilige Driehoek is de enige plek in Nederland waar nog een combinatie van drie actieve kloosters bestaat.
De Biënnale vindt plaats in de kloostergebouwen, de kloostertuinen en de kloosterkapellen, die voor het eerst worden geopend voor het grote publiek en voor hedendaagse kunst. De Amerikaan Philip Glass kan zonder twijfel worden gerekend tot de belangrijkste componisten van de laatste vijftig jaar.
Al enkele jaren is hij een graag geziene gast hier in Melkweg. Het is namelijk alweer de vijfde keer sinds 2011. Dit jaar komt de componist wederom naar Amsterdam met zijn eigen Days And Nights Festival programma. Een festival dat is ontstaan in het Philip Glass Center for the Arts, Science, and the Environment en draait om culturele vernieuwing.
In het kader van Amsterdam Dance Event voert hij op zondag 22 oktober drie van zijn pianowerken uit. Vergezeld door Maki Namekawa en Dennis Russell Davies zijn dit ‘Mad Rush’ (1980), ‘Four Movements For Two Pianos’ (2008) en ‘The Suite from Les Enfants Terribles’ (1996).
Daarnaast presenteren het Amstel Saxophone Quartet & DJ/producer Kypski ‘Glass On The Roof’ ter gelegenheid van de 80e verjaardag van de componist. ‘Glass on the Roof’ bestaat uit drie werken waarbij de turntablist Kypski en het Quartet hun gezamenlijke sound aftasten en ontdekken.

De reeds 80-jarige pionier Philip Glass komt terug naar Amsterdam Dance Event met zijn Days And Nights Festival programma. Daarnaast presenteren het Amstel Saxophone Quartet & DJ/producer Kypski ‘Glass On The Roof’ ter gelegenheid van de 80e verjaardag van de componist. Glass, vergezeld door Maki Namekawa en Dennis Russell Davies, voert hij drie van zijn pianowerken uit, namelijk ‘Mad Rush’ (1980), ‘Four Movements For Two Pianos’ (2008) en ‘The Suite from Les Enfants Terribles’ (1996). ‘Glass on the Roof’ bestaat uit drie werken waarbij de turntablist Kypski en het Quartet hun gezamenlijke sound aftasten en ontdekken. Juliana Kálnay erzählt mit Aberwitz und aus vielen Perspektiven, es ist ein Stimmengewirr, ein Puzzle, das sich nach und nach zu einem dichten Bild fügt. Die Charaktere – Bewohner eines rätselhaften Hauses – versuchen, sich einen Reim auf die Dinge des Lebens zu machen, sich selbst und die anderen zu verstehen, tappen aber oft im Dunklen. Kálnays magischer Realismus hält die Handlung in der Schwebe, ohne ins Phantastische abzuheben, das Haus verbindet alle Elemente im Roman.
Der aspekte-Literaturpreis wird in diesem Jahr zum 39. Mal vergeben. Er ist mit 10.000 Euro dotiert und die bedeutendste Auszeichnung für deutschsprachige Erstlingsprosa. Die Preisverleihung findet am Donnerstag, 12. Oktober 2017, 11:30 Uhr im Rahmen der Frankfurter Buchmesse auf dem Blauen Sofa am ZDF-Stand statt.
Juliana Kálnay, geboren 1988 in Hamburg, wuchs zunächst in Köln und dann in Málaga auf. Sie veröffentlichte in deutsch- und spanischsprachigen Anthologien und Zeitschriften und erhielt das Arbeitsstipendium Literatur der Kulturstiftung des Landes Schleswig-Holstein 2016. Sie lebt und schreibt in Kiel. »Eine kurze Chronik des allmählichen Verschwindens« ist ihr erster Roman.

Kazuo Ishiguro was born on November 8, 1954 in Nagasaki, Japan.The family moved to the United Kingdom when he was five years old; he returned to visit his country of birth only as an adult.
In the late 1970s, Ishiguro graduated in English and Philosophy at the University of Kent, and then went on to study Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia.
Kazuo Ishiguro has been a full-time author ever since his first book, “A Pale View of Hills” (1982). Both his first novel and the subsequent one, “An Artist of the Floating World” (1986) take place in Nagasaki a few years after the Second World War. The themes Ishiguro is most associated with are already present here: memory, time, and self-delusion. This is particularly notable in his most renowned novel, “The Remains of the Day” (1989), which was turned into film with Anthony Hopkins acting as the duty-obsessed butler Stevens.
Ishiguro’s writings are marked by a carefully restrained mode of expression, independent of whatever events are taking place. At the same time, his more recent fiction contains fantastic features. With the dystopian work “Never Let Me Go” (2005), Ishiguro introduced a cold undercurrent of science fiction into his work. In this novel, as in several others, we also find musical influences. A striking example is the collection of short stories titled “Nocturnes: Five Stories of Music and Nightfall” (2009), where music plays a pivotal role in depicting the characters’ relationships. In his latest novel, “The Buried Giant” (2015), an elderly couple go on a road trip through an archaic English landscape, hoping to reunite with their adult son, whom they have not seen for years. This novel explores, in a moving manner, how memory relates to oblivion, history to the present, and fantasy to reality.
Apart from his eight books, Ishiguro has also written scripts for film and television.

Soul of a Nation shines a bright light on the vital contribution of Black artists to a dramatic period in American art and history
The show opens in 1963 at the height of the Civil Rights movement and its dreams of integration. In its wake emerged more militant calls for Black Power: a rallying cry for African American pride, autonomy and solidarity, drawing inspiration from newly independent African nations.
Artists responded to these times by provoking, confronting, and confounding expectations. Their momentum makes for an electrifying visual journey. Vibrant paintings, powerful murals, collage, photography, revolutionary clothing designs and sculptures made with Black hair, melted records, and tights – the variety of artworks reflects the many viewpoints of artists and collectives at work during these explosive times.
Some engage with legendary figures from the period, with paintings in homage to political leaders Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Angela Davis, musician John Coltrane and sporting hero Jack Johnson. Muhammad Ali appears in Andy Warhol’s famous painting.
This landmark exhibition is a rare opportunity to see era-defining artworks that changed the face of art in America.

Soul of a Nation surveys this crucial period in American art history, bringing to light previously neglected histories of 20th-century black artists, including Sam Gilliam, Melvin Edwards, Jack Whitten, William T. Williams, Howardena Pindell, Romare Bearden, David Hammons, Barkley L. Hendricks, Senga Nengudi, Noah Purifoy, Faith Ringgold, Betye Saar, Charles White and Frank Bowling.
The book features substantial essays from Mark Godfrey and Zoe Whitley, writing on abstraction and figuration, respectively. Film by the Sea is hét festival voor film en literatuur en al sinds 1999 een begrip in Zeeland en ver daarbuiten.
Inmiddels kom er jaarlijks ruim 43.000 bezoekers naar de havenstad Vlissingen om zich tien dagen lang onder te dompelen in het beste wat film en boek te bieden hebben. Zo worden er bekende en minder bekende films en documentaires getoond, competities gehouden, lezingen, colleges en concerten gegeven en de gezelligste feestjes gebouwd. Ook vele acteurs, schrijvers en regisseurs van vakveteranen tot jonge talenten laten graag hun gezicht zien bij het festival. De unieke locatie aan zee en het bomvolle, steeds verrassende programma maken Film by the Sea van Openingsgala tot Slotfeest ieder jaar weer een feest. Dit jaar is de 19e editie van Film by the Sea en vindt plaats van 8 t/m 17 september.
Buiten het festival om is er het programma Film by the Sea door het Jaar, waarbinnen elke week een bijzondere film wordt vertoond.

Dickerson, Julieta van Pedro Almodóvar, Nocturnal Animals van Tom Ford, The Handmaiden van Chan-wook Park, The Light Between Oceans van Derek Cianfrance en Tonio van Paula van der Oest dingen mee naar de Parel, de publieksprijs voor de Beste Boekverfilming.
Tot en met 14 september via besteboekverfilming.nl stemmen op zijn favoriet. Op 15 september wordt op Film by the Sea, het festival voor film en literatuur in Vlissingen, de Parel uitgereikt aan de film die de meeste stemmen heeft behaald.
De zeven nominaties zijn door een comité van een boekhandelaar, bibliothecaris en filmkenner gekozen uit het aanbod aan van boekverfilmingen die uitkwamen tussen 1 juli 2016 en 31 juli 2017. Vorig jaar ontving Publieke Werken van regisseur Joram Lürsen, gebaseerd op de gelijknamige roman van Thomas Rosenboom, de Parel voor de beste Boekverfilming. De zeven boekverfilmingen zijn te zien op het festival Film by the Sea, dat plaatsvindt van 8 t/m 17 september. Kijk voor meer informatie op www.filmbythesea.nl.
Boek en film gaan heel goed samen. Aan menig beroemde film gaat vaak een even beroemd boek vooraf. Denk aan klassiekers als Turks fruit, Doctor Zhivago, The English Patient en Harry Potter. Maar ook Het Diner, Sonny Boy, Life of Pi, Sophie’s Choice, etc.
De genomineerde films voor de Parel zijn gebaseerd op de volgende boeken, in dezelfde volgorde: De GVR van Roald Dahl (De Fontein), Dubbelspel van Frank Martinus Arion (De Bezige Bij), Stilte van Alice Munro (De Geus), Tony & Susan van Austin Wright (De Arbeiderspers), Vingervlug van Sarah Waters (Nijgh & Van Ditmar), Het licht van de zee van M.L. Stedman (Boekerij) en Tonio van A.F.Th van der Heijden (De Bezige Bij).

De Uitmarkt is het startsein voor het Nederlandse culturele seizoen.
Drie dagen lang zijn er in Amsterdam voorstellingen, optredens en markten te zien van nationale culturele instellingen op het gebied van muziek, toneel, dans, cabaret, opera en ballet. Daarnaast biedt de Uitmarkt ook een voorproefje van de nieuwe tentoonstellingen, boeken, films en cross-mediale uitingen.

De Uitmarkt is de landelijke opening van het culturele seizoen. Deze mix van theater, dans, muziek en cabaret vindt traditiegetrouw het laatste weekend van augustus plaats in Amsterdam. Niet alleen de podiumkunsten worden in de spotlight gezet. Het nieuwste van het nieuwste op het gebied van literatuur, film, museale kunst en nieuwe media is hier te ervaren. Met meer dan een half miljoen bezoekers, 2000 artiesten en 25 podia is de Uitmarkt uitgegroeid tot het grootste culturele festival van Nederland. En dat alles voor nop.
Al 40 jaar heeft de Uitmarkt maar één doel: meer mensen introduceren tot het enorme aanbod aan kunst en cultuur in Nederland. De Uitmarkt wordt georganiseerd door De Vries Producties in opdracht van Stichting Uitmarkt. Stichting Amsterdam Marketing verzorgt de redactie, publiciteit en marketing rondom de Uitmarkt.
Over 40 jaar Uitmarkt:
Met een club jonge mensen dachten we destijds na over hoe je nieuw publiek kan bereiken. Zo ontstond het idee: waarom gaan we niet de straat op? Een markt met theater, muziek, dans, podia, musea en -later- boeken. Dat was het ei van Columbus, omdat je juist op straat heel gemakkelijk tegen nieuwe dingen aanloopt.
