Het jaar 1968 behoort tot de iconische jaren van de twintigste eeuw. Het is een kanteljaar, waarin alles mogelijk lijkt. 1968 is het jaar van de Meirevolutie in Parijs, de Praagse Lente, het verzet tegen de oorlog in Vietnam, het bloedbad van My Lai, de moorden op Martin Luther King en Robert Kennedy, de Yippies bij de Democratische conventie in Chicago, de zwarte handschoenen bij de Olympische Spelen in Mexico en Amsterdam als ‘magies centrum’.
Over de hele wereld komen jongeren in opstand tegen de gevestigde orde. De protesten worden gevoed door het ideaal van een andere samenleving en het geloof in de nieuwe mens. Ze gaan gepaard met psychedelische experimenten, harde strijd en emancipatiebewegingen van zwarten en vrouwen. Bevrijding is het sleutelwoord.
Maar 1968 eindigt als een jaar van restauratie: de bestendiging van de regering van president De Gaulle in Frankrijk, de Sovjetinval in Tsjecho-Slowakije en de verkiezing van Richard Nixon in de Verenigde Staten. Desondanks hebben de culturele,maatschappelijke en politieke invloeden van 1968 nu, een halve eeuw later, niets aan betekenis ingeboet.
In dit enerverende, kleurrijke boek neemt Roel Janssen, die in mei 1968 naar Parijs trok om getuige te zijn van de studentenrevolte, de lezer mee op een wereldreis door het revolutiejaar. Het is een gedreven journalistiek verslag dat de gebeurtenissen van vijftig jaar geleden in perspectief plaatst en de herinneringen aan dat veelbewogen jaar levend houdt. ‘You say you want a revolution’, een verwijzing naar de hit van the Beatles in 1968, onderscheidt zich door een spannende verteltrant vol smakelijke details en oog voor de zelfoverschatting van de generatie van ’68.

Detlef Siegfried, geb. 1958, ist Professor für neuere deutsche und europäische Geschichte an der Universität Kopenhagen. Er hat mehrere Bücher zu Alltagskultur, Pop und Linksradikalismus in der Bundesrepublik veröffentlicht, darunter Time is on my side. Turkey now jails more journalists than any other country. One third of all imprisoned journalists in the world are being held in Turkish prisons, the vast majority waiting to be brought to trial.
Journalists and media workers from all strands of opposition media have been targeted in an unprecedented crackdown since the violent coup attempt in July 2016.
Coupled with the closure of more than 160 media outlets, the message is clear and disturbing: the space for dissent is ever-shrinking and speaking out comes at an immeasurable cost.
This crackdown must end. Act now to demand media freedom in Turkey.
Journalists and other media workers must be freed from pre-trial detention. A free media is an essential component of any functioning, pluralist society.
They must be allowed to do their job, because journalism is not a crime.

De Academie De Gouden Ganzenveer kent de Gouden Ganzenveer 2018 toe aan de Zuid-Afrikaanse dichteres Antjie Krog.
Gerdi Verbeet, Academievoorzitter De Gouden Ganzenveer maakte afgelopen zaterdag de laureaat bekend in het radioprogramma De Taalstaat. De Academie De Gouden Ganzenveer eert Krog als een bijzondere en veelzijdige dichteres, als een uitzonderlijk integer schrijfster en journaliste, en als een begenadigd performer van haar eigen werk.
De prijsuitreiking vindt plaats op donderdag 19 april a.s. in Amsterdam. Een weerslag van deze bijeenkomst wordt vastgelegd in een speciale uitgave, die in de loop van het jaar zal verschijnen.
De Academie, een initiatief van het bestuur van stichting De Gouden Ganzenveer, kent jaarlijks deze culturele prijs toe. De leden zijn afkomstig uit de wereld van cultuur, wetenschap, politiek en het bedrijfsleven. Met deze onderscheiding wil de Academie het geschreven en gedrukte woord in het Nederlands taalgebied onder de aandacht brengen.
Voorgaande laureaten zijn Arnon Grunberg, Xandra Schutte, Geert Mak, David Van Reybrouck, Ramsey Nasr, Annejet van der Zijl, Remco Campert, Joke van Leeuwen, Adriaan van Dis, Joost Zwagerman, Tom Lanoye, Peter van Straaten, Maria Goos, Kees van Kooten, Jan Blokker en Michaël Zeeman.

De Zuid-Afrikaanse Antjie Krog (1952) is een gelauwerd dichter, schrijver en academicus. Krog debuteerde in 1970 op achttienjarige leeftijd met de dichtbundel Dogter van Jefta. Inmiddels is ze uitgegroeid tot een van de belangrijkste dichters van Zuid-Afrika.
Haar poëzie is persoonlijk, zintuiglijk en sterk geëngageerd: Krog dicht over het moederschap en het ouder worden, maar ook over de diepe verbondenheid en de worsteling met de ongelijkheid en het racisme in haar land. Krog kreeg bekendheid in Nederland door haar vele optredens bij Poetry International, de Nacht van de Poëzie en het festival Winternachten. Talrijke poëzieliefhebbers raakten in de ban van haar ongewone, ontroerende en klankrijke poëzie.
In 1999 publiceerde uitgeverij Atlas een bloemlezing uit haar werk onder de titel Om te kan asemhaal. Daarna zijn haar dichtbundels bij uitgeverij Podium verschenen. Zij schreef ook proza, bijvoorbeeld Country of my Skull (in het Nederlands: De kleur van je hart, 1998/2000), toneelstukken en non-fictie. De roman Mond vol glas van Henk van Woerden en het toneelstuk Mamma Medea van Tom Lanoye vertaalde zij van het Nederlands naar het Afrikaans.
Antjie Krog is buitengewoon hoogleraar Letteren en Filosofie aan de Universiteit van de Westkaap. Haar werk is veelvuldig bekroond, onder andere met de prestigieuze Hertzogprijs, de Reina Prinsen Geerligsprijs, de Pringle Award, de Alan Paton Award. Op donderdag 19 april a.s. neemt zij de Gouden Ganzenveer 2018 in ontvangst.

Benjamin Taylor is the author of his family memoir, The Hue and Cry at Our House, as well as Proust: The Search in the Yale Jewish Lives series; Naples Declared, a travel memoir; and the award-winning novels, Tales Out of School and The Book of Getting Even. He edited Saul Bellow: Letters and There Is Simply Too Much to Think About, Bellow’s collected nonfiction. Taylor is a past fellow and current trustee of the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

Ernest Gaines was born on a plantation in Pointe Coupee Parish near New Roads, Louisiana, which is the Bayonne of all his fictional works. He is a writer-in-residence emeritus at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Gaines received a MacArthur Fellowship in 1993 for his lifetime achievements; was named a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, one of France’s highest decorations, in 1996; and was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2004. He and his wife, Dianne, live in Oscar, Louisiana.

Homage to Catalonia is Orwell’s personal account of his observations in the Spanish Civil War. The book was first published in the United Kingdom in 1938.
In 1936, originally intending merely to report on the Spanish Civil War as a journalist, George Orwell found himself embroiled as a participant—as a member of the Workers’ Party of Marxist Unity.

Johan Bertus Wouter Polak (1928-1992) was een legendarische en extravagante uitgever, essayist, bibliofiel, vertaler en mecenas.
Hij groeide op in ‘een zeer liberaal joods milieu met sterk atheïstische en sociaaldemocratische inslag’. Dit ogenschijnlijk idyllische bestaan werd bruut verstoord door de vroege dood van Johans vader en de Duitse bezetting vlak daarna. Deze ingrijpende gebeurtenissen en de verhouding met zijn moeder bepaalden voor een groot deel Polaks verdere leven.
De drama’s uit zijn jeugd worden door Hilberdink in verband gebracht met de oprichting van uitgeverij Polak & Van Gennep in 1962. Hij gaf op fraaie wijze het werk uit van onder anderen P.C. Boutens, J.H. Leopold, Herman Gorter en J.C. Bloem. En dat van Gerard Reve, die hij van alle naoorlogse auteurs het meest bewonderde en met wie hij een uiterst complexe verhouding kreeg.
Daarnaast begon Polak in 1966 de al even vermaarde Athenaeum Boekhandel op het Spui in Amsterdam. Het werd een centrum van activiteiten, zowel politiek als literair, en Johan werd een bekende Amsterdammer.
Uitvoerig komt ook Polaks rol aan de orde in de emancipatie van homoseksuelen en de strijd tegen het antisemitisme.
Zijn persoonlijke seksuele bevrijding wordt openlijk beschreven. Johans emancipatiestrijd was verbonden met de strijd tegen het antisemitisme. Hij schreef: ‘Er is in homosexuelen een hypersensitiviteit voor taal en schoonheid aanwezig, juist nu. De kans bestaat dat zij instinctief reeds voelen, zoals de Joden voorheen, dat zij getekend zijn en reeds op het punt staan als verworpenen te worden uitgeroeid. Ik ben op dat punt pessimistisch en zie allerlei onrustbarende tekenen.’
