Vandaag is onze Audrey al 33 dagen! Er zijn niet
heel veel mannen die hun kinderen en kleinkinderen
kunnen vertellen dat zij ooit hun president in levenden
lijve hebben aanschouwd. Het uitzicht op Dealey Plaza
is hier weids. Blij met mijn baantje, en mijn pauze.
Wie krijgt er nu de kans zoiets van zo nabij te zien? Oei,
ik laat een boer. Die cola was wel lekker maar ik dronk
net iets te snel. Daar buigt de stoet mijn richting op.
Ik zie hem zwaaien. Nooit eerder zag ik zulk roze als
dat van Jackie’s pakje. Aan dergelijke kleuren moeten
moeten ze hier wennen. Ze lijkt welhaast een Parisienne.
Op de gazons daar wuiven brave – wat hoor ik nou voor
koud geluid? Het doorladen van een wapen hier vlakbij?
En….Hé, ginds op die brug glanst de zon op een vizier.
Wie zijn dat? Waarom schouderen die gasten hun geweer?
Verrek….

Een dezer dagen verschijnt Samenval / Gabungan, een boek met afbeeldingen van schilderijen en sculpturen van Edith Bons en daarbij geschreven gedichten van Albert Hagenaars. Alle tekst is in het Nederlands en Indonesisch.
Een voorpublicatie verschijnt in Fleurs du Mal Magazine.
De eerste stap in het proces dat tot het project Samenval /Gabungan zou leiden werd gezet in Indonesisch-Nederlands Cultureel Centrum Karta Pustaka in Yogyakarta, hoofdstad van de Javaanse cultuur. Al in 1986 mocht Edith Bons daar een expositie inrichten. Het was haar eerste activiteit in Indonesië, waar zij werd geboren en een deel van haar jeugd doorbracht.
Jaren later volgde Siti Wahyuningsih uit het nabije Pundong met het oog op haar huwelijk met Albert Hagenaars en verhuizing naar Europa een cursus Nederlands in hetzelfde centrum. Tijdens een bezoek daar kwamen beiden in contact met theaterman en dichter Landung Simatupang, die Alberts poëziebundel Tropendrift in Bahasa Indonesia zou vertalen. Deze oorspronkelijk in het Nederlands geschreven gedichten waren eerder in een vertaling van John Irons in het Engels verschenen.
In 2007 ontving Edith Bons de uitnodiging om een installatie met rijst in Karta Pustaka in te richten. Tijdens een plechtigheid in het centrum stelde Landung Simatupang Albert en Siti voor aan de dichter Winarko Boesrie en diens vrouw Edith.
Dit contact kon zich zowel in Nederland als op Java verdiepen, wat tot verschillende vormen van samenwerking leidde.
Zo maakte Edith speciaal voor de drietalige bundel Palawija / De derde oogst / The third harvest (2010) van Albert Hagenaars het werk Javanese girl.
In december 2010 organiseerden 38 CC (Delft) en Galerie Ariana (Den Haag) ter gelegenheid van haar 25-jarig kunstjubileum een retrospectieve tentoonstelling in Bacinol 2 in Delft, het gebouw waar zij al jarenlang een atelier heeft. Zowel Winarko als Albert las tijdens de opening uit eigen werk voor. Laatstgenoemde ging daarbij in op de overeenkomsten tussen zijn werk en dat van Edith, wees op het belang van thema’s als de doorwerking van het verleden, vervreemding, vruchtbaarheid en samenleving. Ook gebruiken ze soortgelijke contrasten: west-oost in het algemeen en Indonesië-Nederland in het bijzonder, man-vrouw, jong-oud, traditie-vernieuwing, en alle twee zetten ze veelvuldig het motief rijst in.
Albert publiceerde in 2011 de beschouwing Edith Bons – 25 jaar kunstenaar en in juli 2012 schreef hij een recensie over de tweetalige gedichtenbundel Beelddicht van Winarko.
Ook nog in 2012 droeg hij zijn poëzievideo Palawija aan Edith Bons op.
Ondertussen correspondeerden ze volop en bezochten ze elkaars tentoonstellingen en boekpresentaties.
Albert kreeg zodoende steeds meer affiniteit met het werk van Edith. In 2018 stelde hij daarom voor om gedichten bij haar werk te maken. Aanvankelijk dacht hij aan enkele verzen voor een catalogus maar gaandeweg groeide het plan uit tot het boek Samenval / Gabungan, met veertig schilderijen en sculpturen en evenzoveel daarbij geschreven gedichten.
Barney Agerbeek schreef de inleiding van het boek. Deze romancier, dichter en kunstkenner, geboren in Surabaya en wonend in Nederland, werkte lange tijd als bankier in Indonesië. Hij gebruikte zijn ervaringen daar en in andere landen in diverse boeken.
Samenval / Gabungan is aldus het resultaat van een langdurige samenwerking van kunstenaars die in vriendschap verbonden zijn door eenzelfde passie: nieuwsgierigheid naar interculturele interactie, liefde voor Indonesië en het versterken van begrip over en weer.

Rapper
De oude dichter droomde. Hij sprak niet meer
maar pleegde spoken word. Het was gebeurd
voor hij er erg in had. Hij stiet zijn verzen, nat
van ’t bedenken nog, verbeten in een microfoon,
allengs rapper. Hij had voor papier geen vrees,
alleen een kleine stem die groter wilde lijken.

Welgemutst
De lessen zijn gedaan. De tram stroomt vol uniform.
Vol bewegingsdrang, zoals een vis is, kleine jeugd
alom plotsklaps. Jongens willen wijsjes en meisjes
schoentjes. Daar horen zoentjes bij. Al is het maar
in gedachten. Zie ze eens naar de toekomst groeien.

Holland Festival’s associate artist ANOHNI presents a mixed media exhibit: SHE WHO SAW BEAUTIFUL THINGS.
The installation includes a series of portraits honoring ANOHNI’s former collaborator Dr. Julia Yasuda, taken by Julia’s late wife Erika Yasuda in Tokyo in the early 1980s, and exhibited here for the first time.
Erika Yasuda’s portrets: Within the collection of the Huis Willet-Holthuysen in the centre of Amsterdam, ANOHNI layers photos, silkscreened fabrics, sculpture, video, sound and paintings from her own artistic practices within a selection of Erika Yasuda’s extraordinary portraits. The works reflect an insular and delicately composed vision of enlightened femininity and luxuriant androgyny, persevering in memory despite historical and ongoing existential threats.
ANOHNI: ‘I like the concept of ‘animism’ – that everything is alive, in an ongoing a process of transformation -and that all materiality is imbued with a certain presence, even a sense of memory that we might not entirely understand. I work with veils as a way to suggest different layers of presense. Sometimes I imagine a cacophony of moments within a timeline in a certain space, as if they were all able to express their vitality simultaneously.’
About ANOHNI: Born in England, ANOHNI lives and works in America as a musician, visual artist and theater director. In 1995 she founded her performance group The Johnsons, with which she performed with symphony orchestras in opera houses around the world, including Sydney Opera House, the Royal Opera House in London, Teatro Real in Madrid and Carnegie Hall in New York.
ANOHNI has presented exhibitions of her visual work at the Nikolaj Kunsthal, Kunsthalle Bielefeld, The Hammer Museum, The Kitchen and Sikkema Jenkins Gallery in New York. She co-facilitated the art project FUTURE FEMINISM presented at The Hole, New York in 2014 and was part of ANOHNI’s artistic residency in Aarhus, European Capital of Culture in 2017.
The Willet-Holthuysen House: The imposing Willet-Holthuysen House is situated in the center of Amsterdam. The house on the Herengracht contains many period rooms. Its beautiful salons are in the style of Louis XIV, and the garden is symmetrically designed as a French formal garden.

Clive Branson (1907–1944) was born in Ahmednagar, India, the son of a major in the Indian army.
He studied at the Slade School of Art and exhibited at the Royal Academy when he was just 23. Five of his paintings are today in the Tate. His daughter is the painter Rosa Branson.
In 1932 Branson joined the Communist Party. He taught for the National Council of Labour Colleges, spoke at weekly open-air meetings on Clapham Common and with his wife Noreen managed a Party bookshop. He took a leading role in driving Mosley’s British Union of Fascists out of Battersea, was responsible for the formation of a local Aid Spain Committee and fought with the International Brigades in Spain.
Taken prisoner at Calaceite, he spent eight months in Franco’s prison camps. After he was repatriated, Branson toured Britain raising money and support for the Spanish Republic. During the Blitz he painted Battersea street-scenes for the Artists International Association. Conscripted in 1941, he served as a tank commander in the Royal Armoured Corps. He was killed in action in Burma, aged just 36.
The Selected Poems of Clive Branson brings together, for the first time, the best of his surviving poetry. Passionate and committed, it’s a first-hand account of the most violent years of the twentieth-century – Britain in the Slump, Spain during the civil-war, Fascist prisons, the London Blitz, the cultural shock of India and its poverty, the war against Japan – recorded with a painterly eye and a communist faith in the power of the people.
Richard Knott (Editor) is a writer and poet. He has written extensively on aspects of modern history, including the experience of war artists (The Sketchbook War); war correspondents (The Trio); and most recently the surveillance of writers and artists by the Security Services over three decades: (The Secret War Against the Arts). He has also published two collections of poetry.

Waaraan zou mijn moeder gedacht hebben
toen ze mij voor de eerste keer de borst had
gereikt? Waar ze aan begonnen was? Waar
ik aan begonnen was, beginnen ging? ‘Wordt
