Kate Tempest: Brand New Ancients On Film
– Part 3 –
In November 2013, performance poet Kate Tempest and Battersea Arts Centre, embarked on a journey together to tour the award winning show Brand New Ancients.
The tour includes 9 London venues including the Royal Opera House, Harrow Arts Centre, Lyric Hammersmith and Battersea Arts Centre, as well as 5 regional venues across the country from Contact in Manchester to Brighton Dome as well as heading to New York at St. Ann’s Warehouse.
In collaboration with director Joe Roberts, Battersea Arts Centre has produced three short films interpreting Kate’s spoken word through moving image, which will be released across the tour.

Kate Tempest started out when she was 16, rapping at strangers on night busses and pestering mc’s to let her on the mic at raves. Ten years later she is a published playwright, poet and respected recording artist.
Her theatre writing includes Wasted for Paines Plough, Brand New Ancients for the BAC, and Glasshouse for Cardboard Citizens.
She has written poetry for the Royal Shakespeare Company, Barnado’s, Channel 4 and the BBC. She has worked with Amnesty International to create a schools pack helping secondary school children write their own protest songs, and was invited to write and perform a new poem for Aung San Suu Kyi when she recieved the Ambassador of Conscience award in Dublin.
Kate released her debut album Balance with Sound of Rum in 2011. She has featured on songs with Sinead O Connor, Bastille, the King Blues, Damien Dempsey, Pink Punk, and Landslide. She has just finished recording a new solo album Everybody Down with acclaimed music producer Dan Carey. She’s toured extensively, supporting Billy Bragg on his UK tour, as well as supporting Scroobius Pip, Femi Kuti, Saul Williams and John Cooper Clarke. She is 2 x slam winner at the prestigious Nu-Yorican poetry cafe in New York. She’s played all the major UK and European music festivals either solo or with Sound of Rum. She’s headlined Latitude festival and her poetry has been featured on the BBC’s Glastonbury highlights. In 2012 she launched her first poetry book to a sell out crowd at the Old Vic theatre in London.
She’s led workshops in schools, colleges and youth groups across the UK and taught a creative writing class at Yale. She’s given lectures at Goldsmiths University and to newly qualified English teachers for the Prince’s Teaching Institute.
Her first spoken word release Broken Herd came out on Pure Groove in 2009. Her poetry book/CD/DVD package Everything Speaks in its Own Way was published on her own imprint Zingaro in 2012, and is available now from this site: # website kate tempest

Writers Unlimited Winternachten festival 2014

Het is internationaal, het is literatuur, het is een festival en het is in Den Haag. Van 16 t/m 19 januari biedt Writers Unlimited Winternachten optredens van schrijvers vanuit de hele wereld. Van Herman Koch tot de Frans/Libanese Amin Maalouf, van Connie Palmen tot Geling Yan uit China.
Op deze pagina’s vindt u het complete festivalprogramma, inclusief tijdschema’s en achtergrondinformatie over alle deelnemende auteurs en musici. Programmawijzigingen voorbehouden.
Deze festivaleditie heeft als thema ‘Like me’: een knipoog naar de sociale media.
Er zijn zowel Engelstalige- als Nederlandstalige programma’s. In Filmhuis Den Haag draaien keuzefilms van de auteurs, er zijn boeken te koop, de schrijvers signeren en er is muziek van Wende en Huub van der Lubbe, maar ook van Typhoon en Neco Novellas. Natuurlijk is er eten en drinken en aan het eind van de avond danst iedereen de nacht in. Wees welkom!

Door haar Joods-Russische afkomst heeft de familie van de jonge Lucien Ginsburg het niet gemakkelijk in het bezette Parijs tijdens de oorlogsjaren. Later gaat Lucien aan de kunstschool studeren. Hij komt aan de kost met optredens in bars en cabarets. In de jaren 60 breekt hij door als Serge Gainsbourg, de ster van het cabaret de Swinging Sixties. Hij verlegt de grenzen van het chanson en maakt naam met zijn onconventionele muziek en zijn rebelse gedrag. Hij is bevriend met onder meer Brigitte Bardot en Juliette Gréco. Gainsbourg wordt een icoon van de Franse cultuur, maar maakt ook ophef met zijn turbulente liefdesleven met Jane Birkin en vele anderen

Theatermaker Alexandra Broeder en kunstenaars duo L.A. Raeven hebben een pact gesloten. Zij werken nauw samen aan een duivels portret van zeven meisjes tussen de vijftien en twintig jaar. Met een kwaadaardig genoegen zullen zij hun lichaam in de strijd gooien en het anders zijn tot norm verheffen. Deze meisjes weten waar je bang voor bent. Ze zullen langzaam in je kruipen, aan je knagen en je sterker maken. Net zolang tot je bij ze hoort.
Alexandra Broeder (Rotterdam, 1978) verlegt in haar werk consequent de grenzen van haar vakgebied. Zij heeft naam gemaakt met verontrustende voorstellingen waarin uitsluitend kinderen meespelen. In 2010 ontving zij het Theaterstipendium van het Prins Bernard Cultuurfonds.
L.A. Raeven (Heerlen, 1971) bestaat uit de eeneiige tweeling Liesbeth en Angelique Raeven. Hun performances en video-installaties hebben hun symbiotische relatie en de moeizame verhouding met hun lichaam en dat van de ander tot onderwerp. Hun werk speelt zich af in het grensgebied tussen werkelijkheid en inbeelding.

Nieuwe film over het leven van de Zuid-Afrikaanse dichteres

Ingrid Jonker (1933-1965) was een van de meest invloedrijke Zuid-Afrikaanse dichters van haar generatie. Vaak wordt ze vanwege haar grote talent, haar schoonheid en eeuwige hunkering naar liefde vergeleken met Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Plath en Marylin Monroe.
Tijdens haar korte leven was ze al een zeer gewaardeerd schrijfster, maar pas nadat Nelson Mandela haar beroemde gedicht ‘Het Kind’ voordroeg, tijdens de opening van het parlement in 1994, krijgt Ingrid de waardering van het grote publiek die ze verdient. Mandela noemt haar zowel een Afrikaner als een Afrikaan en Ingrid groeit uit tot een waar icoon. Haar werk wordt tot op de dag van vandaag door miljoenen Zuid-Afrikaners gelezen en op scholen onderwezen.
Nog voor de geboorte van Ingrid verlaat haar vader, Abraham Jonker, het gezin en laat ze met niets achter. Ingrid groeit op bij haar grootouders en ziet daar hoe haar geesteszieke moeder steeds depressiever wordt en uiteindelijk zelfmoord pleegt als Ingrid tien jaar is. Haar grootmoeder is niet in staat om voor Ingrid en haar zus Anna te zorgen en de meisjes moeten bij hun vader en zijn nieuwe gezin gaan wonen. Abraham Jonker accepteert zijn dochters met moeite en maakt duidelijk onderscheid tussen Ingrid en Anna en zijn andere kinderen, iets wat Ingrid niet kan en wil begrijpen en het begin is van de moeilijke relatie met haar vader.
Ingrid is een zeer gevoelig kind en stopt al het verdriet in haar gedichten. Al op dertienjarige leeftijd maakt ze haar eerste gedichtenbundel getiteld Na die Somer. Als ze later in contact komt met de bekende Zuid-Afrikaanse dichter D.J. Opperman vindt ze in hem de mentor die ze nodig heeft. De relatie met haar vader daarentegen verslechtert. De erkenning die Ingrid als dochter van hem wil, krijgt ze niet en met haar vrijgevochten ideeën raakt ze steeds verder van hem verwijderd.
In 1956 trouwt Ingrid met schrijver Pieter Venter en verhuist naar Johannesburg. Ook wordt haar eerste officiële bundel, Ontvlugting, gepubliceerd. Het huwelijk met Pieter is geen succes. Ingrid vindt niet de liefde en zekerheid die ze nodig heeft en is diep ongelukkig in Johannesburg. Na een aantal jaar scheiden ze en Ingrid keert met hun dochtertje Simone terug naar Kaapstad.
In Kaapstad wordt Ingrid de ster van de ‘Sestigers’, een groep artiesten rondom dichter Uys Krige die strijden tegen het conservatisme en zich vrijelijk mengen met Afrikaanse kunstenaars. Ze heeft tegelijkertijd een heftige verhouding met de schrijvers Jack Cope en André Brink. Beiden sleept ze mee in haar passionele liefde, maar beiden durven zich door haar onvoorspelbaarheid niet aan haar te binden. De publicatie van een tweede bundel van Ingrid stuit op veel weerstand door het duidelijke standpunt dat Ingrid met de Sestigers in neemt tegen de Apartheid en wordt tegengehouden door de nieuwe censuurcommissie, waar haar vader deel van uit maakt. Vader en dochter staan lijnrecht tegenover elkaar. Voor de gevoelige Ingrid is dit te veel, ze belandt in een depressie. In 1961 wordt ze kort opgenomen in de psychiatrische inrichting Valkenburg, dezelfde kliniek waar haar moeder een einde aan haar leven maakte. Nadat ze is ontslagen uit de kliniek, lijken er betere aan te breken. Eindelijk wordt haar tweede bundel Rook en Oker gepubliceerd. De bundel wordt met lovende kritieken ontvangen door schrijvers en dichters.
Rook en Oker wordt in 1964 bekroond met de prestigieuze Afrikaanse Pers-Boekhandel Prijs en Ingrid vertrekt naar Europa voor een lange reis. De reis brengt haar niet wat ze ervan had verwacht en eenmaal terug in Zuid-Afrika wordt ze weer opgenomen. In de nacht van 18 op 19 juli 1965 loopt Ingrid de zee in bij Drieankerbaai. Ingrid Jonker was 32 jaar en liet een klein maar indrukwekkend oeuvre achter.
Uitgeverij Podium geeft een nieuwe editie uit van de bundel ‘Ik herhaal je’ met een selectie van het werk van Ingrid Jonker, vertaald door Gerrit Komrij, en een biografie van Henk van Woerden.
Het verhaal van Black Butterflies
Black Butterflies gaat over het leven van de jonge Zuid-Afrikaanse kunstenares Ingrid Jonker, een gevoelige en rebelse geest die haar vrije ideeën over kunst, liefde en politiek met een kleine groep gelijkgestemde schrijvers en kunstenaars in Zuid-Afrika deelde, de Sestigers. Tegen de achtergrond van verzet tegen de censuur van de Nasionale Party, leeft Ingrid Jonker haar jonge leven tot het uiterste en wordt haar werk steeds bekender en meer gewaardeerd. De grote liefde in het leven van Ingrid Jonker, de schrijver Jack Cope, kan haar niet het geluk en de gemoedsrust geven waar ze naar op zoek is. Met haar vader Abraham Jonker, een rechtse minister voor de Nasionale Party tijdens het Apartheidsregime, heeft ze een moeizame relatie. Politieke onenigheid drijft vader en dochter steeds verder uiteen. Het belang van het werk van Ingrid Jonker voor de Zuid-Afrikaanse cultuur wordt pas erkend nadat Nelson Mandela haar gedicht ‘Die Kind’ voordraagt bij zijn eerste rede voor het Zuid-Afrikaanse Parlement in 1994.

Regisseur: Paula van der Oest (1965) studeerde in 1988 af aan de Nederlandse Film en Televisie Academie en begon haar carrière als regie-assistente en later als regisseuse bij de VPRO. Haar speelfilmdebuut kwam in 1996 met de film DE NIEUWE MOEDER, waarmee ze meteen een nominatie voor Beste Film op het Nederlands Film Festival in de wacht sleepte en de Holland Film Award voor Beste Film won. In 2001 maakte Van der Oest de overstap naar het grote publiek met ZUS EN ZO, die genomineerd werd voor de Oscar voor Beste Buitenlandse Film. Time Magazine benoemde haar tot de “Woody Allen van Amsterdam”. Na dit succes volgde de Engelstalige thriller MOONLIGHT, waarmee ze de Hollywood Discovery Award voor Beste Europese Film won. Andere films van Paula van der Oest zijn MADAME JEANETTE, VERBORGEN GEBREKEN, TIRAMISU en WIJSTER.

Tentoonstelling: Ideal Individuals. L.A. Raeven

‘De maatschappij creëert een ideaalbeeld waaraan iedereen moet voldoen. Je moet mooi, succesvol en perfectionistisch zijn, alles onder controle hebben, dat dicteren de media,’ aldus de tweeling en kunstenaarsduo Liesbeth en Angelique Raeven. Sinds 2000 ensceneren zij situaties waarin de Westerse vrouwelijke en mannelijke schoonheidsidealen en daarmee samenhangende consumptiepatronen aan de kaak worden gesteld. Zij gaan hierbij tot het uiterste.

Hun video- en fotowerken, tekeningen en collages leggen genadeloos de obsessie met het perfecte, modieuze lichaam vast, evenals de manier waarop vrouwelijke en mannelijke ideaalbeelden worden gebruikt in de marketingstrategieën van de consumptiemaatschappij.
L.A. Raeven heeft talloze situaties en performances geënsceneerd waarin zij jonge mensen blootstelden aan dezelfde kwelling die modellen doormaken tijdens audities voor modeshows of balletscholen. Zonder plot, glamour en spektakel verstrijkt de tijd in de videoregistraties ervan, waarbij de jonge mensen soms uitvoerig door L.A. Raeven worden opgemeten en geïnspecteerd. Een oproep voor een dergelijke selectie wordt in 2001 geweigerd door de Engelse krant The Guardian. Onder de kop ‘Ideal individual’ staan de vereisten waaraan belangstellenden moeten voldoen om in aanmerking te komen voor de ‘Ideal Army’ van L.A. Raeven, zoals een borstomvang van 82 en een taille van 43 cm, plus een aantal psychologische eigenaardigheden als ‘ongewone eet- en drinkgewoonten’ en ‘minstens één praktische handicap’. De maten corresponderen met die van een lang en extreem mager persoon met een androgyn uiterlijk. Het is een figuur die in de fashion wereld als meest ideaal wordt beschouwd en ‘gereproduceerd’ via reclame, maar wiens omvang in het dagelijkse leven wordt geassocieerd met ziekte en anorexiapatiënten.
In de video Echoes of Despair bijvoorbeeld wordt een jonge vrouw geportretteerd die zichzelf oplegt alleen nog maar water te drinken, een praktijk die veel voorkomt bij anorexia.
Vanaf 2007 wordt in het werk van L.A. Raeven een ander soort ‘maakbaarheid’ uitgelicht. De video No Whites (2007) vertoont de zoektocht van een jonge blanke vrouw naar de meest ideale zwarte spermadonor. Het onderwerp van The Height of Vanity (2008) is de invloed die het West-Europese schoonheidsideaal in andere werelddelen heeft: L.A. Raeven volgt de Chinese vriendinnen Sun Mei en Lu Yang in hun streven naar perfectie. Een van hen laat operatief haar benen verlengen om te voldoen aan de maatstaven van een westers uiterlijk. L.A.Raeven: “Mensen verliezen hun identiteit en hebben geen oog meer voor hun eigen schoonheid. Ze spiegelen zich alleen nog aan westerse ideaalbeelden.”
Het MMKA presenteert van 25 september tot en met 28 november een selectie van L.A Raevens video-installaties, tekeningen, collages en fotowerken vanaf 2000 tot nu. De tentoonstelling zal verder reizen naar Servië en Italië.

De in Nederland wonende kunstenaar Steve McQueen (Londen, 1969) vertegenwoordigt Engeland dit jaar op de Biënnale van Venetië, die deze zomer voor de 53ste keer wordt gehouden. Twee jaar geleden toonde hij er zijn filminstallatie Gravesend/Unexploded, die is aangekocht door De Pont en nu in de projectzaal wordt gepresenteerd. Gravesend is een 17 minuten durende film over het mineraal coltan. De film wordt getoond in combinatie met Unexploded, een opname van nog geen minuut die McQueen in 2003 maakte in Basra, tijdens zijn verblijf in Irak als ‘war artist’.
Weinig mensen zullen zich realiseren dat er een verband bestaat tussen hun mobiele telefoon of laptop en de gewelddadige strijd die het oosten van de Democratische Republiek Congo al jaren in zijn greep houdt. Het gebied is rijk aan coltan, een mineraal waaruit het tantalium wordt gewonnen dat gebruikt wordt in elektronische apparatuur. Door de sterk gestegen prijs heerst in de provincie Kivu een ware coltankoorts. De aanwezigheid van het kostbare metaal zorgt er niet alleen voor dat de partijen elkaar het gebied des te heviger betwisten, de illegale handel in coltan fourneert ook de middelen om die strijd te financieren. McQueen heeft het oorlogsgeweld, de schade aan het milieu en de corrupte handel bewust buiten beeld gehouden. Gravesend opent met het productieproces in de steriele omgeving van een hightech laboratorium en stelt daar de lichamelijke arbeid waarmee het erts wordt gewonnen, tegenover. De film combineert bijna abstracte beelden van de Congo-rivier met een rood ondergaande zon aan de monding van Theems.
Hoewel het thema en de aan de realiteit ontleende beelden de film een aantal kenmerken geven van een documentaire, laat Gravesend zich in de eerste plaats ervaren als een episch gedicht. McQueen confronteert de kijker met meerduidige, vaak raadselachtige beelden. Door het veelvuldig gebruik van close ups en het indringende geluid krijgen deze een fysieke, bijna tastbare kwaliteit.

Het is niet de eerste keer dat McQueen kiest voor een sociaal, maatschappelijk thema. Het uit 2002 daterende Western Deep gaat over de goudwinning in Zuid Afrika. Hunger, zijn vorig jaar in Cannes met de Camera d’Or bekroonde speelfilmdebuut, heeft de hongerstaking van IRA-leden in de Maze-gevangenis tot onderwerp. McQueens betrokkenheid mondt echter nooit uit in een expliciete stellingname. Hij houdt vast aan het tastbare en laat het oordeel over aan de kijker. Bij Gravesend wordt het verhaal over de achtergronden en de implicaties van wat we zien, niet verteld. Uit de titel zouden we kunnen opmaken dat de geschiedenis zich altijd herhaalt. Gravesend is de plaats aan de monding van de Theems, waar Marlow de hoofdfiguur uit Joseph Conrads ‘Heart of Darkness’ (1902) zijn verhaal vertelt over zijn nachtmerrie-achtige missie in koloniaal Afrika en de duistere kanten van de menselijke natuur. “The air was dark above Gravesend, and farther back still seemed condensed into a mournful gloom, brooding motionless over the biggest, and the greatest, town on earth.”

Spring 2009 sees the launch of
a landmark commitment to the arts
with a pan-BBC season dedicated to poetry
Some of the nation’s best loved poets and celebrities will take part in a season of big, bold content across television, radio and online; exploring the far-reaching, compelling and truly fascinating world of poetry.
Griff Rhys Jones launches the Poetry Season on BBC Two on 20 May at 9.00pm with a passionate plea about Why Poetry Matters – how verse has the power to move and why everybody needs it.
Also on BBC Two, My Life In Verse With… Robert Webb is the first in a four-part series exploring the rich terrain of poetry from Milton to Shakespeare through the eyes of four well-known personalities also including Sheila Hancock, Malorie Blackman and Cerys Mathews; and Off By Heart on Friday 22 May at 9.00pm follows primary school children across the country as they take part in a nationwide recitation competition, culminating in a grand final, compered by Jeremy Paxman.

S.BBC Four features an enlightening six-part series, A Poet’s Guide To Britain, presented by Owen Sheers, (Mondays, 8.30pm), which explores six great works about the British landscape; and Ian Hislop welcomes the new Poet Laureate in Ian Hislop Changing Of The Bard – featuring an entertaining history of one of the oldest and, he argues, oddest offices in the British establishment on 16 May at 10.00pm.
Also on BBC Four poet Simon Armitage goes in search of one of the jewels in the crown of British poetry, Sir Gawain, and historian Michael Wood returns to his first great love – the Anglo Saxon world – to reveal the origins of our literary heritage in Michael Wood On Beowulf.

BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 4 will mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Alfred Lord Tennyson, while The Essay – A Laureate’s Life, also on Radio 3, offers five personal takes on the role of Poet Laureate from around the world. Radio 4 will showcase its second Poetry Slam competition following on from its hit 2007 contest.
For younger viewers CBeebies cooks up a fresh, daily serving of scrummy Poetry Pie in a specially created new series for three to six year olds. Starting on BBC Two on May 18 poets from Brian Patten, Roger McGough and Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen to primary school pupils from across the UK contribute to a mix of funny and original rhythms and rhymes.
A dedicated website, bbc.co.uk/poetryseason, launching on 18 May, will feature a wealth of content including a vote to elect the Nation’s Favourite Poet, with short films from a host of celebrities making their case for their favourite poet including John Sergeant on Betjeman and Alex James on Auden. Plus the Poetry Season’s dedicated website will feature a poetry search engine to find poems according to a particular theme or mood.
George Entwistle, Controller Knowledge Commissioning, BBC Vision, says: “The Poetry Season offers viewers a fascinating and accessible insight into verse; there really is something for everyone.
“The UK has an extraordinary poetic tradition. We hope this season, the BBC’s fantastic accompanying online offering, and the other initiatives with the likes of the Poetry Society will inspire and motivate people to discover and reacquaint themselves with the poetry greats. In addition it may also inspire them to discover their own poetic voice.”

Griff Rhys Jones launches the BBC’s Poetry Season with a passionate and personal plea about why poetry matters – how verse has the power to move, and why everybody needs it. Within this witty, stylish, high-impact hour, Griff makes the case that poetry is accessible, enjoyable and downright compelling.
Simon Schama’s John Donne (1×60)
Simon Schama celebrates the life and work of Britain’s greatest love poet, John Donne. For Schama, Donne is the poet who transformed English poetry through his use of language and emotional honesty. With the help of academic John Carey and actor Fiona Shaw, he undertakes a passionate appraisal and forensic examination of Donne’s work.
My Life In Verse With… (4×60)
From Burns to Milligan, Shakespeare to John Cooper-Clarke, many people, without even realising, have fragments of poetry lodged in their brains. Some of the nation’s best-loved celebrities, including Malorie Blackman, Sheila Hancock, Cerys Matthews and Robert Webb, take a journey of discovery into the poems that inspired them.
Off By Heart, 22 May 9.00pm (1×90)
Learning by heart is one of the best ways to experience a poem, but the method has fallen from favour as part of the educational system. To encourage primary school children to engage with poetry, BBC Learning has launched a new campaign, Off By Heart. Central to the BBC’s Poetry Season, this national recitation competition which launched on National Poetry Day in October 2008 continues in 2009 with BBC Two following children across the UK as they progress from regional heats to the grand final in Oxford, compered by Jeremy Paxman.
Armando Iannucci In Milton’s Heaven And Hell (1×60)
Milton is often considered too difficult, obscure or miserable for today’s reader, but to Iannucci, Paradise Lost is a thrilling work of creative genius that we ignore at our peril. Milton tackles everything from good and evil to human freedom and the existence of God, in language unparalled in scope and variety. In the film, Iannucci explores Paradise Lost in detail and looks at the way Milton’s extraordinary life, encompassing work as ‘spin doctor’ to Oliver Cromwell, being imprisoned in the Tower of London and losing his sight, all fed into his masterpiece.
Arena – T.S Eliot (1×60)
Arena contributes to BBC Two’s Poetry Season with a profile of T.S. Eliot which, with unprecedented co-operation from the Eliot Estate, tells the story of one of the 20th century’s most celebrated and elusive writers.
BBC Four
A Poet’s Guide To Britain, starts 4 May 8.30pm (6×30)
Poet and author Owen Sheers presents this series, in which he explores six great works of poetry about the British landscape. The poems by William Wordsworth, Matthew Arnold, Lynette Roberts, Sylvia Plath, Louis MacNeice and George Mackay Brown explore a sense of place and identity across Britain while also opening doors to stories about the lives of the poets themselves.
Ian Hislop’s Changing Of The Bard, 16 May 10.00pm (1×60)
One of the most unusual offices in the British establishment, the role of the Poet Laureate, has no official job description and a small salary which is traditionally supplemented by 650 bottles of the finest sherry. As Carol Ann Duffy, the newly appointed Laureate, settles into the job, Ian Hislop presents an informed and entertaining history of the post.
Sir Gawain And The Green Knight (1×60)
Poet Simon Armitage goes in search of one of the jewels in the crown of British poetry, Sir Gawain And The Green Knight. Following in the footsteps of the poem’s hero, Gawain, through some of Britain’s most beautiful and mystical landscapes, Simon discovers more about the poet, his world and the stories that inspired the poem.
Michael Wood On Beowulf (1×60)
Historian Michael Wood returns to his first great love – the Anglo Saxon world – to reveal the origins of our literary heritage. Focusing on Beowulf and drawing on other Anglo Saxon classics he traces the birth of English Poetry back to the Dark Ages. Travelling across the British Isles from East Anglia to Scotland and with the help of Nobel prize winning poet, Seamus Heaney, actor Julian Glover, local historians and enthusiasts he brings the story and language of this iconic poem to life.
The People’s Poetry – 30 years Of Poetry Please (1×30), 17 May at 9.30pm
Regularly attracting 1million listeners, the world’s longest-running poetry programme, Radio 4’s Poetry Please, reaches its 30th anniversary. BBC Four pays tribute to the programme in a half-hour film.

Poetry Pie starts 18 May on BBC Two
Straight from the oven, CBeebies cooks up a fresh, daily serving of scrummy poetry pie in a specially created new series for three to six year olds. Poets from Brian Patten, Roger McGough and Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen to primary school pupils from across the UK contribute to a mix of funny and original rhythms and rhymes. Each episode is a unique recipe for poetic fun with every poem animated and brought vividly to life by one of five characters who act, dance and sing the words to the poems.

Sonnet Day, May 20
Radio 3 marks the 400th anniversary of the publication of Shakespeare’s sonnets on 20 May with 14 sonnets read by leading actors throughout the day.
Poems For Today
Starting on May 21, Radio 3 celebrates contemporary poetry with a series of more than 40 poems, broadcast daily over a six-week period, celebrating the breadth of contemporary poetry in the UK today. Each of the poems will have been written or published within the last 12 months and will reflect the range of diverse voices that exist in the UK.
Sunday Feature – Children Of The Whitsun Weddings, May 24
Poets Kate Clanchy and Paul Farley take a train through “Larkinland”, as they explore their mutual admiration for Philip Larkin’s work. Born within days of each other in 1965, nine months after the publication of Larkin’s The Whitsun Weddings, Kate and Paul have very different poetic voices. They travel across Britain retracing some of Larkin’s key journeys from Oxford to Hull and Leeds to London, leading the two to a series of lively interchanges on the poet’s influence on them and on their shared passion for Larkin’s work.
Drama On 3 – Idylls Of The King
Radio 3 broadcasts a new adaptation by award-winning poet Michael Symmonds Roberts of Tennyson’s epic poem telling the story of King Arthur.
Sunday Feature – Searching For Alfred: In The Shadow Of Tennyson
Poet Ruth Padel, herself inspired by Tennyson, seeks out the real Alfred and asks why he has become such a lofty remote figure. Two hundred years after his birth Ruth investigates his legacy in art, film and music of all kinds and reveals that Tennyson is a poet for our times as well as his own.
The Essay – Tennyson 200
Marking the 200th anniversary of the birth of one of Britain’s greatest poets, four contemporary British poets each choose a single poem or extract by Tennyson and give a personal account of why it means so much to them.
This content is in addition to Radio 3’s ongoing speech output – Between The Ears, Night Waves, Sunday Feature, The Essay and The Verb, all of which prominently feature poetry.
Radio 4
Radio 4 will broadcast a series of programmes on Tennyson including an edition of Poetry Please featuring readings of his poetry and Great Lives which will explore Lord Tennyson’s life and its impact.
The series of programmes will also include a dramatisation of Tennyson’s poem Maud, while Ulysses Revisited, presented by Sean O’Brien, will explore in detail Tennyson’s great poem, Ulysses.
Poetry Slam 2009
Radio 4 will be broadcasting its second Poetry Slam in early autumn 2009, bringing together some of the best and most popular spoken word performers from all around the country to battle it out for the title of Radio 4 Slam Winner 2009.

Events and online
BBC Learning is supporting the season with a host of events and online activity from May through to National Poetry Day in October.
These include:
An online vote to determine the Nation’s Favourite Poet. Compiled with the Poetry Society and The Arts Council, a shortlist of 30 of Britain’s finest poets will feature on the Poetry Season website. Gems from the BBC archive and examples of their work will help visitors to the site discover more about the shortlisted candidates. A host of celebrities will make the case for their favourite poets via a collection of short films, including John Sergeant on Betjeman, Alex James on Auden, Michelle Ryan on Rudyard Kipling and Nihal on William Blake.
A dedicated Poetry Season website, bbc.co.uk/poetryseason, launching 18 May which will serve as the destination for anyone wanting to learn more about poets and their work. Key features of the site include a poetry search engine enabling users to discover poems based on themes and moods; short films with contemporary poets featuring suggestions on how to enjoy poetry; and links to BBC Poetry Season content.
A must-watch viral campaign introducing some of the nation’s great poems and poets to young audiences and demonstrating their power in a modern context. A host of viral videos will be released throughout the season to show how poetry is a powerful and relevant form of expression.

De veertiende editie van Winternachten draait om ‘Fake!’, met meer dan veertig programma’s rond het thema manipulatie en waarheid in literatuur, media en politiek. Schrijvers, dichters en denkers gaan op zoek naar de laatste resten van waarheid en waarachtigheid, of de leugen?
Het festival opent in de Nieuwe Kerk met de Winternachtenlezing door de Somalische schrijver Nuruddin Farah. Daarmee start een vierdaags festival op vijf podia in en rond Theater aan het Spui in Den Haag.
Meer dan tachtig schrijvers, kunstenaars en musici uit de hele wereld treden op, zoals Amitav Ghosh, Alain de Botton, Connie Palmen, Namgyal Lhamo, Gerrit Komrij, Izaline Calister, Herman Koch, Naima el Bezaz, Kristien Hemmerechts, Nury Vittachi, Shrinivási, Nelleke Noordervliet, Perihan Magden en Margriet de Moor.
