La voix des choses

Même pour la conscience superficielle, le son contient évidem-
ment quelque chose des existences qu’il traduit. Le son pesant
et large de la cloche met en nous un moment l’âme lente et
lourde du métal ébranlé. Et, au contraire, j’imagine qu’à en-
tendre, sans en avoir jamais vu, un verre de cristal, nous nous
figurerions je ne sais quoi de délicat et de pur. Le bruit mélan-
colique, monotone et puissant d’une chute d’eau traduit bien à
l’oreille cette sorte d’existence confuse du fleuve où aucune
goutte ne peut vivre d’une vie particulière distincte, où tout est
entraîné dans le même mouvement et dans la même plainte.
