Melseke: Galleries and the crisis
Galleries and the crisis
The commercial galleries in the Netherlands are not doing too well. The uncertainty caused by the financial crisis is hurting this part of the art sector more than proportionally. On top of this uncertainty the VAT on art has been raised from 6 percent to 19 and will be raised further to 21 percent. The continuing uncertainty about the economy, about income, taxes and mortgages and the substantially higher price of art, withholds potential customers from buying. This does not only affect the owner of a gallery but equally all the artists who are dependent on the gallery sales for their income.
