Jan Prins: In den Avond

Jan Prins

(1876 – 1948)

In den Avond

Nog in den avond,
       nog in den nacht,
had ik verlangend
       u mij gedacht,
had in verbeelding
       ik u zien gaan,
had uit de verte ik
       uw stem verstaan.

Uw rank bewegen,
       naar het mij scheen,
en uw verzorging
       was om mij heen,
en heel uw rustig,
       vertrouwd gedrag, –
en om uw lippen,
       langzaam, uw lach.

Maar toen in ‘t leven,

       en in zijn naakt
ontluisterd aanzien
       ik was ontwaakt,
bleek uw vertroosting
       mij niet gebracht,
noch in den avond,
       noch in den nacht

Daar staat de morgen,
       een hooge poort,
daar zet al verder
       de dag zich voort
en lokt gestadig
       mij in den duur
van menig roerloos
       eenzelvig uur.

Maar in dat uitzicht,
       mij nu verspild,
vindt het verlangen
       zich niet gestild,
dat onverminderd
       u wacht, – u wacht…
nog in den avond,
       nog in den nacht.
