THE SONNETS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sonnet 106<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

When in the chronicle of wasted time,<\/span><\/p>\n

I see descriptions of the fairest wights,<\/span><\/p>\n

And beauty making beautiful old rhyme,<\/span><\/p>\n

In praise of ladies dead, and lovely knights,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Then in the blazon of sweet beauty\u2019s best,<\/span><\/p>\n

Of hand, of foot, of lip, of eye, of brow,<\/span><\/p>\n

I see their antique pen would have expressed,<\/span><\/p>\n

Even such a beauty as you master now.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

So all their praises are but prophecies<\/span><\/p>\n

Of this our time, all you prefiguring,<\/span><\/p>\n

And for they looked but with divining eyes,<\/span><\/p>\n

They had not skill enough your worth to sing:<\/span><\/p>\n

For we which now behold these present days,<\/span><\/p>\n

Have eyes to wonder, but lack tongues to praise.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sonnet 106<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Zie \u2019k in kronieken van de tijd vergaan<\/span><\/p>\n

Hoe wezens uiterst fraai beschreven zijn<\/span><\/p>\n

En schoonheid schoon in oude rijm gedaan,<\/span><\/p>\n

Met lof op vrouwen dood en ridders fijn,<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dan zie ik in \u2019t blazoen van zoetste sierlijkheid<\/span><\/p>\n

Van voorhoofd, oog, van lip, van hand, van voet,<\/span><\/p>\n

Hoe hun antieke pen zou zijn gewijd<\/span><\/p>\n

Aan zulk een schoonheid als u eer aandoet.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dus heel hun hulde is slechts orakeltaal<\/span><\/p>\n

Op onze tijd, die heel uw beeld voorzegt,<\/span><\/p>\n

En daar hun blik slechts gissend was en vaal<\/span><\/p>\n

Deed hun te zwakke zang uw pracht geen recht;<\/span><\/p>\n

Maar \u2019t heden dat ons oog het wonder toont,<\/span><\/p>\n

Verschaft geen tong die dat met lof bekroont.<\/span><\/p>\n
