Art thou he?—
The seer and sage, the hero and lover—yea,
The man of men, then away from the haughty day
Come with me!
Ho—ho! to the night—
The spangled night that would the noon outstare.
Her skirts are fringed with light,
She is girdled and crowned with gems of fire that flare.
The city is dizzy with the thrill of her—
Her shining eyes and shadowy floating hair;
And curious winds her nebulous garments blur,
Blowing her moon-white limbs and bosom bare.
She beckons me—
Down the deep street she goes to keep her tryst.
Come—come—oh follow! oh see
The many-windowed walls uprear so high
They dim and quiver and float away in mist
Tangling the earth and sky.
And the pale stars go by
Like spirits masterful and still and strong,
Dragging the heavy nets of life along.
Down in the deep
Lightly the nets enmesh us with the swarm
Of huddled human things that, soft and warm,
Beat out so close the pulses of their lives.
We crowd and creep,
We jostle and push out of our halls and hives,
We chatter and laugh and weep.
Ah, do you hear
The choral of voices, each the secret hiding?
Do you see the warren of souls, each one abiding
In separate solitude, remote, austere?
Here in the glare of the street we cling together
Against the warning darkness, the still height Of the awful night.
We blow like a feather
From hope to hope along the winds of fate
Importunate.
The lettered lights that twinkle in and out
Lure us and laugh at us, beckon and flout,
Flashing their slangy symbols in our eyes,
Blurting their gaudy lies.
The bold shop-windows flaunt their empty wares—
Jewelled or tinselled shows of things,
The fripperies and furnishings
Wherein stark life will stifle her shiverings
Ere forth in the dawn she fares.
Ah, tyranny perilous!
Vain shows that master us!
See the gay girls fluttering wistfully,
Where waxen dummies grin in gowns of lace.
Watch yonder woman in black, whose dimmed eyes see
Soft baby things folded with tender grace.
And look at the children crowding and shouting there
Where dancing dolls jiggle and jerk and stare.
They hover and cling
Possessed by signs and shadows of the thing.
They moor their bark
Close to the shore and fathom not the dark—
The dark that glooms afar
Beyond the invisible star,
Beyond faith’s boundaries,
The plausible was and is.
Come, ye adventurous,
Open your hearts to us!
You tiny newsboy, calling extras there,
Pitiful burden-bearer, pale with blight,
What of the night?—
The sullen night that brings you, little one,
So heavy a load of care,
While happier children sleep from sun to sun?
And you, wan youth, haggard and spent,
By mad thirst driven and rent—
Thirst of the body, thirst of the soul—
To what dark goal
Does reeling night lead you, her listless prey,
To gorge you and slay,
And hide forever from the searching day?
And you, furtive and flaunting girl,
Whose heavy-lidded eyes unfurl
Red signal fires, the while, demure,
Your brooding lips deny their lure—
Ah, does the lewd night lash you to her cave,
And will you never her ribald rage out-brave,
And rise no more forlorn
To greet the morn?
The street grows insolent.
With cries of dark delight
And gestures impudent
It rends the robe of night.
Up to the silent sky
It shouts the human cry.
The crowds push in and out
By all the open ways,
Eager to stare and shout
At vaudeville waifs of plays.
They drop their coins and laugh
At the wheezy phonograph,
They hush for the noisy drone
Of the croaking megaphone.
That litters life with jest
They pause that they may not go
On life’s eternal quest.
They stifle truth with speech,
They mimic love with lust,
For the glitter of gilt they reach
And cover the gold with dust.
They stoop to the din and glare
Who have the lofty night for comrade rare.
They grope along the ground
Whose stature like the night with stars is crowned.
Oh piteous!
Oh struggle vain!
Of puppets emulous,
We strive and strain
To forge for our limbs a chain.
Come, thou deep-hearted Night, so dark and bright !
Come, holy Night, come, lawless, dissolute Night!
Come, human Night, hushing thy dreams divine!
Give me thy dreams, O Night—they shall be mine!—
Mine and this beggar’s, though we lie to thee!
Mine and this harlot’s, though from thee we
flee! Mine and this worldling’s, though with might and right
We hide them from our sight.
Thy shadowed eyes the truth behold, and we—
We too shall know the truth, and so be free!
Even now—yea, now
Through lies and vanities we pry and peer.

At little shrines where pale fires flicker and fleer.
Hark! in the echoing street
The drums that bang and beat,
Where the curb-stone preachers tell

A man through a glass astare

W is de hoofdpersoon in de gedichten van De jongenskamer die samen één verhalend gedicht vormen.
Het begint in de jaren voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog en eindigt in de onherkenbaar veranderde wereld van nu – maar wel met een liefdesgedicht.
De kamer achter de werkplaats van W’s vader, een kleermaker, is de plek waar onder invloed van de tijd en de geschiedenis de eerste ideeën van W en zijn broers ontstaan over liefde, vriendschap, kunst en sport – én over de politieke en sociale werkelijkheid en de rol die het individu daarin kan spelen.
Al de liefdeservaringen, de vriendschappen, de boeken, de reizen die het leven van W bepalen, lijken toch altijd met onzichtbare draden verbonden met de eerste waarnemingen uit de jongenskamer.
Willem van Toorn (Amsterdam, 1935) is dichter, schrijver en vertaler. Hij publiceerde een groot aantal romans en verhalen- en gedichtenbundels, en was redacteur van het literair tijdschrift Raster.

Het besluit van president Trump de Amerikaanse ambassade in Israël naar Jeruzalem te verhuizen inspireerde Patti Smith tot het schrijven van een gedicht, The New Jerusalem.
Dit nieuwe, nog ongepubliceerde werk van de beroemde punkpoëet verschijnt exclusief bij Nexus als tweetalige uitgave in de Nexus Bibliotheek. Naast The New Jerusalem zal deze uitgave ook een drietal eerdere gedichten bevatten. De vertaling van de gedichten wordt verzorgd door Onno Kosters. The New Jerusalem wordt gepresenteerd bij het Nexus-symposium ‘An Education in Counterculture’, 26 mei in Amsterdam.

Patti Smith, USA 1946, is zangeres en dichteres. Als ‘Godmother of Punk’ protesteerde zij met krachtige, controversiële muziek tegen de gevestigde orde en wezenloze fabrieksarbeid in de vercommercialiseerde wereld. Ze groeide op met de muziek van Bob Dylan, leefde samen met fotograaf Robert Mapplethorpe en werd een bekend gezicht in de turbulente New Yorkse kunstscene.
In 1974 begon Smith op te treden met gitarist Lenny Kaye, met wie ze nog steeds de kern van de band The Patti Smith Group vormt. Haar debuutalbum Horses (1975) wordt gezien als een van de invloedrijkste albums in de geschiedenis van de rockmuziek. Samen met Bruce Springsteen schreef ze Because the Night, haar grootste hit. Naast vele albums schreef Smith ook dichtbundels en boeken, waaronder Just Kids (2010), haar bekroonde autobiografie over het leven in New York in de jaren zeventig en haar relatie met Mapplethorpe.

De Parelduiker pakt het thema van de Boekenweek op en stelt de vraag: hoezo natuur?
In dit themanummer naar aanleiding van de Boekenweek vier verhalen over schrijvers en kunstenaars die ieder een ‘andere’ kant van de natuur leerden kennen.
Joris van Casteren volgde de voetsporen van Gerard Bilders (1838-1865). In het vieze Amsterdam ging deze jonge schrijver en landschapsschilder op tragische wijze ten onder. Tot op zijn sterfbed, in een benauwd pand aan een stinkende gracht, hunkerde hij naar de natuur en het buitenleven.
Madelon de Keizer schrijft over Albert Verwey. Anders dan diens vriend Willem Kloos, die het bij de stad en zijn verlokkingen hield, koos Verwey na zijn huwelijk met Kitty van Vloten voor een leven dichter bij de natuur en stichtte met haar een gezin in een huis op een duin te Noordwijk. Zij zetten zich in voor het herstel van de band tussen mens en natuur, die door de verstedelijking teloor dreigde te gaan.
Nescio bezong, zo schrijft biografe Lieneke Frerichs, onbezorgd de schoonheid van zomerse glooiende korenvelden, terwijl hij met zijn dochters door Noord-Frankrijk fietste.
Willem van Toorn ten slotte zette zich op initiatief van kunstschilder Willem den Ouden in voor zorgvuldige, vernuftiger dijkverbeteringen die het Nederlandse rivierenlandschap zoveel mogelijk zouden sparen, aldus Marco Daane. Hij laat zien dat Van Toorns betrokkenheid hierbij ook sporen heeft achtergelaten in zijn literaire werk.

Bijna niemand weet dat Willem Elsschot kort na de Eerste Wereldoorlog een paar jaar de Antwerpse correspondent van de Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant was. Elsschot brengt nuchter verslag uit, maar laat zijn sarcastisch commentaar niet achterwege.

Fifty years after it first appeared, one of Noam Chomsky’s greatest essays will be published for the first time as a timely stand-alone book, with a new preface by the author.
As a nineteen-year-old undergraduate in 1947, Noam Chomsky was deeply affected by articles about the responsibility of intellectuals written by Dwight Macdonald, an editor of Partisan Review and then of Politics. Twenty years later, as the Vietnam War was escalating, Chomsky turned to the question himself, noting that “intellectuals are in a position to expose the lies of governments” and to analyze their “often hidden intentions.”
Originally published in the New York Review of Books, Chomsky’s essay eviscerated the “hypocritical moralism of the past” (such as when Woodrow Wilson set out to teach Latin Americans “the art of good government”) and exposed the shameful policies in Vietnam and the role of intellectuals in justifying it.
Also included in this volume is the brilliant The Responsibility of Intellectuals Redux, written on the tenth anniversary of 9/11, which makes the case for using privilege to challenge the state. In 2017 bestaat ‘fleursdumal.nl magazine for art & literature’ 10 jaar
Ter gelegenheid van dit jubileum kondigt de redactie met groot genoegen het verschijnen aan van het eerste deel van een nieuwe reeks digitale publicaties: Fantom Ebooks.
Fantom Ebooks nummer 1 is een werk van dichter Bert Bevers, getiteld: OVERVLOED. De e-bundel omvat een reeks van tien verschillende vertalingen van het gedicht ‘Overvloed’ van Bert Bevers. Vertalingen werden gemaakt door onder meer Frank Decerf (Spaans), John Irons (Deens), Fred Schywek (Duits) en Carina van der Walt (Afrikaans). Het gedicht en de vertalingen werden eerder gepubliceerd op de website.
Bert Bevers (1954) is een Antwerpse dichter en beeldend kunstenaar. Bij Uitgeverij WEL verschenen twee uitgebreide bloemlezingen uit zijn werk: Afglans (Gedichten 1972-1997) en Eigen terrein (Gedichten 1998-2013). When I founded the Cabaret Voltaire, I was sure that there must be a few young people in Switzerland who like me were interested not only in enjoying their independence but also in giving proof of it.
I went to Herr Ephraim, the owner of the Meierei, and said, “Herr Ephraim, please let me have your room. I want to start a night-club.” Herr Ephraim agreed and gave me the room. And I went to some people I knew and said, “Please give me a picture, or a drawing, or an engraving. I should like to put on an exhibition in my night-club.” I went to the friendly Zürich press and said, “Put in some announcements. There is going to be an international cabaret. We shall do great things.” And they gave me pictures and they put in my annoucements. So on 5th February we had a cabaret. Mademoiselle Hennings and Mademoiselle Leconte sang French and Danish chansons. Herr Tristan Tzara recited Rumanian poetry. A balalaika orchestra played delightful folk-songs and dances.
I received much support and encouragement from Herr M. Slodki, who designed the poster, and from Herr Hans Arp, who supplied some Picassos, as well as works of his own, and obtained for me pictures by his friends O. van Rees and Artur Segall. Much support also from Messrs. Tristan Tzara, Marcel Janco and Max Oppenheimer, who readily agreed to take part in the cabaret.
We organized a Russian evening and, a little later, a French one (works by Apollinaire, Max Jacob, André Salmon, A. Jarry, Laforgue and Rimbaud). On 26th February Richard Huelsenbeck arrived from Berlin and on 30th March we performed some stupendous Negro music (toujours avec la grosse caisse: boum boum boum boum – drabatja mo gere drabatja mo bonooooooooo -). Monsieur Laban was present at the performance and was very enthusiastic. Herr Tristan Tzara was the initiator of a performance by Messrs. Tzara, Huelsenbeck and Janco (the first in Zürich and in the world) of simultaneist verse by Messrs. Henri Barzun and Fernand Divoire, as well as a poème simultané of his own composition, which is reproduced on pages six and seven.
The persent booklet is published by us with the support of our friends in France, Italy and Russia. It is intended to present to the Public the activities and interests of the Cabaret Voltaire, which has as its sole purpose to draw attention, across the barriers of war and nationalism, to the few independent spirits who live for other ideals. The next objective of the artists who are assembled here is the publication of a revue internationale. La revue paraîtra à Zurich et portera le nom “Dada” (“Dada”). Dada Dada Dada Dada.

Het Wintertuinfestival, dat van 22 tot en met 26 november plaatsvindt in Nijmegen, heeft dit jaar als titel: De vrije lezer
Tientallen schrijvers, dichters, wetenschappers, muzikanten en kunstenaars – onder wie Adriaan van Dis, Fresku en Kamagurka – gaan in op dit thema. Zowel grote literaire namen als aanstormende talenten reizen af naar Nijmegen. Op diverse locaties in de binnenstad zijn programma’s en activiteiten. Het hele festivalprogramma staat online en de kaartverkoop loopt via wintertuinfestival.nl
Op woensdag 22 november bespreken middelbare scholieren tijdens Lezen met de Sterren het boek Dit is geen dagboek met Erna Stassen. ’s Avonds is er een kroegcollege: Roel Smeets, promovendus bij Algemene Cultuurwetenschappen, gaat in op het festivalthema.
Op donderdag 23 november geeft niemand minder dan Fresku een college op de Radboud Universiteit.
Op vrijdag 24 november vindt er een Avond van de grote beloftes plaats, waarop talenten uit de stal van De Nieuwe Oost centraal staan. Simone Atangana Bekono, Marjolein Visser, Nikki Dekker en Jante Wortel tonen nieuw werk.
Op zaterdag 25 november kun je overdag meedoen met twee schrijfworkshops. ’s Avonds wordt Doornroosje omgetoverd tot een literair walhalla. Tijdens de grootse festivalavond gaan talloze gasten in op het thema, waaronder Adriaan van Dis, Kamagurka, Franca Treur, Erik Jan Harmens, Alma Mathijsen, Anousha Nzume en Jet Steinz.
Het Wintertuinfestival wordt afgesloten met de boekpresentatie van Een botsing op het spoor van Joris van Casteren. Het boek gaat over een fatale botsing die een jaar geleden bij een spoorovergang in Nijmegen plaatsvond. Gedurende het hele festival is Nina Polak Writer in Residence en is er in de bibliotheek een Virtual Reality-installatie te bezichtigen.
Het verkrijgen van informatie is de goudkoorts van deze tijd. Bedrijven als Facebook en Google willen alles van ons weten, van ons reisgedrag en onze kledingsmaak tot onze politieke voorkeuren. Als een rots in de branding van de algoritmes en cookies staat de vrije lezer. Hij of zij vindt nieuwe ideeën, andere werelden, en schatten aan niet in kaart te brengen informatie in boeken. Je zou kunnen zeggen dat lezen van boeken in deze tijd een daad van verzet is, dat boeken een bastion van vrijheid zijn, en dat de lezer een activist is.
