Russian activist and artist, Yulia Tsvetkova, is facing six year sentence for drawing the female body

Russian activist and artist, Yulia Tsvetkova, is facing prosecution and harassment for defending women’s and LGBTI rights.

She has been under house arrest since 22 November, under absurd charges of “production and dissemination of pornography” for her drawings of the female body. She is facing up to six years in prison if convicted. Yulia Tsvetkova is a prisoner of conscience and must be immediately and unconditionally released.

Yulia Tsvetkova is an LGBTI and women’s rights activist, artist and stage director, from Komsomolsk-on-Amur, the Russian Far East.

She was detained on 20 November 2019 and put on house arrest two days later, after being charged with the “production and dissemination of pornographic materials”, for making body positive drawings of the female body and sharing them on social media.

Her drawings included pictures of female reproductive organs, and she shared them online as part of her women’s empowerment campaign.

On the day of her arrest, police searched Yulia’s apartment and the children’s educational club where she worked previously. The police seized her electronic devices, documents, and brochures on gender issues. Yulia later said that during the search police officers referred to her as a “lesbian, sex trainer and propagandist leader”.

Yulia has been the target of an overtly homophobic campaign since March 2019, when she was forced to leave Merak, the amateur youth theatre company she worked at, after police launched an investigation into alleged “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors”.

The investigation was launched in reaction to Yulia’s anti-bullying, anti-discrimination play, Blue and Pink.

On 11 December 2019 Yulia was found guilty of “propaganda of non-traditional sexual relations among minors”, and fined 50,000 rubles (approximately 600 GBP), for serving as the administrator of two LGBTI online communities on the popular Russian social media site, VKontakte.

Both of the online communities were properly marked as “18+”, as required by Russian law. Even under the confines of the homophobic Russian “gay propaganda” legislation, the “offence” should only be valid if the “propaganda” material is targeted at people under the age of 18.

On 17 January, Yulia informed the media that new proceedings had been opened against her, under the same Article of the Code of Administrative Offences that she had previously been charged under. This time she was being prosecuted for posting a drawing she made depicting two same-sex couples with child on social media, alongside the statement, “Family is where love is. Support LGBT+ families”.

She published the drawing in support of a same-sex couple who were forced to flee Russia with their adopted children after authorities threatened to remove their children from their custody.

Bruges Triennial 2018: Liquid City

From May 5 until September 16, 2018, Bruges will be the setting for the second edition of the Triennial, an art route in the heart of the historic city.

With the central theme ‘Liquid City’, the Triennial wants to investigate the role of a city like Bruges in a globalized and changing world. With the artistic and architectural installations, the participants of Triennale Brugge 2018 | Liquid City create welcoming public spaces in the city center. Those temporary interventions on little known and iconic places in Bruges offer great opportunities for encounter, wonder and dialogue.

Triennial Bruges 2018 will feature works by Jarosław Kozakiewicz (PL), Wesley Meuris (BE), Renato Nicolodi (BE), NLÉ – Kunlé Adeyemi (NG-NL), OBBA (KR), Roxy Paine (US), John Powers (USA), raumlabor (DE), Rotor (BE), Ruimteveldwerk (BE), Tomás Saraceno (AR), Jose Selgas & Lucia Cano (ES), Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian (IR), StudioKCA (US), Peter Van Driessche – Atelier4 (BE).

The Bruges Triennial 2018, themed Liquid City reaches back to 2015 edition, which was a reflection on the city as a megapolis: “What if the 5 million visitors to the city decided to stay?”

This edition takes a step further: how flexible, liquid and resilient can a historic city like Bruges be in an age when nothing seems to be certain any longer? None other than Zygmunt Bauman, prophet of the permanent crisis in the West, devoted his final book to this phenomenon, a year before his death in January 2017.

In Retrotopia, Bauman invites the reader to question the dynamics of our society, as well as the metaphor “liquid” itself, the contemporary era as a time of transition, which today stands in stark contrast with the institutional framework that once formed a safe environment for our (grand)parents. Each institution in turn, whether the government, the church, political parties, insurance companies or banks, have lost the public’s trust. This renders society particularly vulnerable to fear-mongers.

This world is changing rapidly. Established ways of thinking and forms of life are under pressure. What does the future hold?

The Bruges Triennial 2018 co-curators Tilll-Holger Borchert and Michel Dewilde invited international artists and architects to think about these issues. Many of them sought inspiration in the city that is literally crisscrossed and surrounded by water.

The waterways that once earned Bruges its international renown, become a metaphor for Liquid City. Works of art, installations and meeting places have been put up in the city centre.

They form a free hospitable route that brings people together in unexpected spots. That is one of the main objectives of the Bruges Triennial 2018: generating encounters, challenging people not only to view the artworks but also to experience them and to become part of the creative process.

Participating internationally renowned architects include Kunlé Adeyemi, (Nigeria/Netherlands, NLÉ Architects), who designed the third version of MFS – Minne Floating School for Bruges, selgascano (Spain) who created the new swimming pavilion for Brugians and visitors alike on the city canal, and OBBA (Korea) who worked together with Bruges-based Architectuuratelier Dertien12 to construct The Floating Island, a meandering walkway on the water. Climate change and environmental issues are addressed through the installation of the Bruges Whale by StudioKCA (US), INFINITI designed by Peter Van Driessche of Aterlier4 (Belgium) suggests tiny housing situated on the water whereas the Aerocene project by Tomás Saraceno (Argentina) invites us to look to the sky. A very different approach is offered by Brussels-based collective Rotor who presents a museum dedicated to the Chinese Mitten Crab in the Poortersloge and an exotic eatery at the beach in Zeebrugge. raumlabor (Germany) has been working with local youths on their House of Time, a continuous project of building, experimenting and hands-on experience and the Belgian collective Ruimteveldwerk have persuaded the inhabitants of one of the historic almshouse complexes to help create their G.O.D. project. Further installations along the arts trail are created by artists such as Wesley Meuris (Belgium), Renato Nicolodi (Belgium), John Powers (US), Jarosław Kozakiewicz (Poland) and Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian (Iran).

Additional art works, designs, models and documentary materials of all the participants are presented in the free Liquid City exhibition in the Poortersloge, the central information point of the Bruges Triennial 2018.

A further exhibition is located in the Church of the Great Seminary. Architectures Liquides, curated by Abdelkader Damani, is a selection of impressive visionary architectural models from the FRAC-Centre collection in Orléans (France).

The bilingual catalogue (Dutch/English) with contributions by Till-Holger Borchert, Michel Dewilde, Abdelkader Damani, Tom Trevor, Anna Lowenhaupt Tsing, Marc Van den Bossche ea. and photography by Iwan Baan is available at the Triennial information points, arts bookshops and online.

Exhibition: Soul of a Nation, Art in the Age of Black Power, until October 22 in Tate Modern

Soul of a Nation shines a bright light on the vital contribution of Black artists to a dramatic period in American art and history

The show opens in 1963 at the height of the Civil Rights movement and its dreams of integration. In its wake emerged more militant calls for Black Power: a rallying cry for African American pride, autonomy and solidarity, drawing inspiration from newly independent African nations.

Artists responded to these times by provoking, confronting, and confounding expectations. Their momentum makes for an electrifying visual journey. Vibrant paintings, powerful murals, collage, photography, revolutionary clothing designs and sculptures made with Black hair, melted records, and tights – the variety of artworks reflects the many viewpoints of artists and collectives at work during these explosive times.

Some engage with legendary figures from the period, with paintings in homage to political leaders Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Angela Davis, musician John Coltrane and sporting hero Jack Johnson. Muhammad Ali appears in Andy Warhol’s famous painting.

This landmark exhibition is a rare opportunity to see era-defining artworks that changed the face of art in America.

In the period of radical change that was 1963–83, young black artists at the beginning of their careers confronted difficult questions about art, politics and racial identity. How to make art that would stand as innovative, original, formally and materially complex, while also making work that reflected their concerns and experience as black Americans?

Soul of a Nation surveys this crucial period in American art history, bringing to light previously neglected histories of 20th-century black artists, including Sam Gilliam, Melvin Edwards, Jack Whitten, William T. Williams, Howardena Pindell, Romare Bearden, David Hammons, Barkley L. Hendricks, Senga Nengudi, Noah Purifoy, Faith Ringgold, Betye Saar, Charles White and Frank Bowling.

The book features substantial essays from Mark Godfrey and Zoe Whitley, writing on abstraction and figuration, respectively. It also explores the art-historical and social contexts with subjects ranging from black feminism, AfriCOBRA and other artist-run groups to the role of museums in the debates of the period and visual art’s relation to the Black Arts Movement. Over 170 artworks by these and many other artists of the era are illustrated in full color.

2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the first use of the term “black power” by student activist Stokely Carmichael; it will also be 50 years since the US Supreme Court overturned the prohibition of interracial marriage. At this turning point in the reassessment of African American art history, Soul of a Nation is a vital contribution to this timely subject.

Daniel Kane: “Do You Have a Band?”. Poetry and Punk Rock in New York City

During the late 1960s, throughout the 1970s, and into the 1980s, New York City poets and musicians played together, published each other, and inspired one another to create groundbreaking art.

In “Do You Have a Band?”, Daniel Kane reads deeply across poetry and punk music to capture this compelling exchange and its challenge to the status of the visionary artist, the cultural capital of poetry, and the lines dividing sung lyric from page-bound poem.

Kane reveals how the new sounds of proto-punk and punk music found their way into the poetry of the 1960s and 1970s downtown scene, enabling writers to develop fresh ideas for their own poetics and performance styles. Likewise, groups like The Fugs and the Velvet Underground drew on writers as varied as William Blake and Delmore Schwartz for their lyrics. Drawing on a range of archival materials and oral interviews, Kane also shows how and why punk musicians drew on and resisted French Symbolist writing, the vatic resonance of the Beat chant, and, most surprisingly and complexly, the New York Schools of poetry. In bringing together the music and writing of Richard Hell, Patti Smith, and Jim Carroll with readings of poetry by Anne Waldman, Eileen Myles, Ted Berrigan, John Giorno, and Dennis Cooper, Kane provides a fascinating history of this crucial period in postwar American culture and the cultural life of New York City.

Daniel Kane is reader in English and American literature at the University of Sussex in Brighton. His books include We Saw the Light: Conversations Between the New American Cinema and Poetry (2009) and All Poets Welcome: The Lower East Side Poetry Scene in the 1960s (2003).

INCUBATE – 10/11 December 2016 – an annual celebration of cutting-edge culture

   incubate-dec16-111

Incubate is the annual celebration of cutting-edge culture. It is a festival exhibiting a diverse view on indie culture as a whole, including music, visual arts, film and contemporary theater, and a conference. For the upcoming December edition it brings more than 40+ cutting edge artists in an intimate context to an international audience. Black metal next to free jazz. Refreshing art next to innovating indie games.
Incubate takes place troughout more than fifteen venues in the inner-city of Tilburg.
Incubate – 10/11 December 2016

   incubate-dec16-112

Incubate Zero is the part of the programme that is FREE for all to attend. A little taste of the festival so you can decide if you want more. After the success of the previous Incubate Zero programmes, we’re proud to host another free offering of artists. So make sure to bring your friends and family and check out these acts!

On December 11th, everyone can enjoy some of the best new acts from the European underground. Divided over venues Cul de Sac and Kim’s Kroeg, the following bands will perform:

Heads
HEADS. from Berlin are a loud and noisy bunch, clearly influenced by Shellac and The Jesus Lizard: the good stuff. Their first record was released by This Charming Man Records so you know this not just your average band. Come see for yourself at Cul de Sac on Sunday December 11th.

Any Other
Remember those sweet, sweet times that we call the nineties? You might, but these kids don’t because they’re way too young. They do sound like they were there though, and they do such a killer job at it we forgot all about Kim Deal or Weezer or whatever. Who are those people anyway? Any Other excel in doing their own new thing with a sound that is beloved and feels familiar.

Fake O’s
If these Groningen locals would be a black metal band they’d be considered trve kvlt without a doubt. This hardcore punk outfit sounds like they came straight from the Bay Area in the eighties and shred like they want to show Keith Morris how it’s done. Of course Keith already knows, but he’d still be into FAKE O’s.

Sven Agaath
When you think you’ve heard it all: you’re about to find out you haven’t. Sven Agaath play shoegaton (a term they probably coined themselves and for which they should receive proper recognition), a mix between shoegaze and reggaeton. They themselves call it “a mixture of Dinosaur Jr, Sean Paul, MBV and Daddy Yankee that feels urgent and natural”. Although this will probably sound horrifying to most music fans, we can assure you – it really isn’t. Sven Agaath is for everybody that likes shoegaze but also wants to dance from time to time.

   incubate-dec16-113

The Shady Greys
The Shady Greys are an Amsterdam based dirty blues-garage duo with a nice lo-fi sound. Although using only a cajon and feet played percussions (no drums!) they’re a high energy duo with fast riffing and raw vocals.

Dead High Wire
A young band from Antwerp and Mechelen, Belgium playing a mixture of echoing postpunk and indierock. They’ve released work on Kinky Star records (La Jungle, Räpe Blossoms etc.) and Oddie Records (Teen Creeps, Mind Rays, Double Veterans etc.). These are quality labels worth a whole lot more than that ‘organic’ logo on your milk carton.

Jellephant & The Phantoms
A young guy from Arnhem named Jelle and his band called The Phantoms are psychedelic band that make us think of our fellow countrymen Yuko Yuko. With a cool, echoing lo-fi mix of psychedelica, surf and downbeat garage these kids are one of the better Dutch acts in recent years.

Wobby
Together with Tilburg natives, comic creators and founders of the small press magazine ‘Wobby’, Incubate is proud to add a Comic Fair to its December edition. This will be accompanied by an English edition of the Wobby magazine, with contributions from different artists. There will also be talks, performances and interviews, but the main event will be your chance to meet and see some of your favorite creators. Guests include Bries (BE), Sigrid Calon (NL), Charlotte Dumortier (BE), Maurice van Es (NL), Jeroen Funke (NL), KAMP HORST (NL), Knust/Extrapool (NL), Vite (BE), The Stalinskis (NL), Tieten Met Haar (BE), and Ward Zwart (BE).

Holzapfel
Incubate will finalize its two-year visual arts program Do It With Others with a special performance by German artist Olaf Holzapfel. Holzapfel is a multidisciplinary artist who has extended his practice of painting with photography, sculptures, installations and digital work. To create his architectural sculptures, Holzapfel uses a range of (often locally sourced) materials, from plastic to straw. On Saturday 10th of December Holzapfel will do a special performance with a group of participants and craftsmen, around the noble art of rope making. Making a rope from straw is a complex process, a traditional craft that few still master. Tilburg is known for its history in textiles and the use of flax and hemp, as traditionally hemp was grown for processing into rope. As Incubate always connects artists with visitors and history with contemporary art, we invite all those interested to join us and Holzapfel in this special performance.

Incubate Art Symposium
At Incubate we try to offer kicks and contemplation right next to each other. We like to learn new things while having fun; about music and art and all the wonderful things that come with it. This is why we’re delighted to host the Do It With Others symposium on December 11th at Duvelhok. Following the finissage of Olaf Holzapfel’s project the day before, the symposium will include several artists that contributed to Do It With Others over the recent years. They will be interviewed by some very interesting hosts from the Dutch contemporary art scene, discussing their past residencies and collaborative work produced in Tilburg. Make sure to catch these afternoon talks if you’re curious to meet these artists in person and ask them your questions.

GUERRILLA GIRLS 1985 – NU # IN VAN ABBE MUSEUM

tentoonstelling
van abbemuseum eindhoven
09/07/2016 – 15/01/2017
Guerrilla Girls 1985 – nu
Conservatoren: Christiane Berndes, Nina Svenson

De meest bekende poster van de Guerrilla Girls is gemaakt in 1989 en stelt de vraag “Do women have to be naked to get into U.S. museums? Only 3 % of the artists in the Met. Museum are women, but 83 % of the nudes are female”.

Crimson Architectural Historians

Tijdstip: donderdag 19.00 – 20.30 uur.

do 25.02.2016, 19.00 uur: Tracy Metz, Talkshow Stadsleven: De Straat 2.0

Vormgeving tentoonstelling: Can & Asli Altay (Future Anecdotes Istanbul).

Adviesraad: Bert Dirrix en Robert van Rixtel (Social Urban Space), Christiane Berndes en Antoine Derksen (Van Abbemuseum).

TENTOONSTELLING ‘KEITH HARING. THE POLITICAL LINE’ IN DE KUNSTHAL ROTTERDAM

HARINGKEITH101

tentoonstelling ‘Keith Haring. The Political Line’ 20 september 2015 t/m 7 februari 2016
