Christian Morgenstern

(1871-1914)

Mensch und Möwe

Eine neugierkranke Möwe,

kreiste ich zu häupten eines

Wesens, das in einen weiten

dunklen Mantel eingewickelt,

von dem Kopfe einer Bune

auf die grüne See hinaussah.

Und ich wußte, daß ich selber

dieses Wesen sei, und war mir

dennoch selbst so problematisch,

wie nur je dem klugen Sinne

einer Möwe solch ein dunkler

Mantelvogel, Mensch geheißen.

Warum blickt dies große, stumme,

rätselhafte Tier so ernsthaft

auf der Wasser Flucht und Rückkehr?

Lauert es geheimer Beute?

Wird es plötzlich aus des Mantels

Schoß verborgne Schwingen strecken,

und mit schwerem Flügelschlag den

Schaum der weißen Kämme streifen?

So und anders fragte rastlos

mein beschränktes Möwenhirn sich,

und in immer frechern Kreisen

stieß ich, kläglich schreiend, oder

ärgerlich und höhnisch lachend,

um mich selber … Da erhob sich

aus dem Meere eine Woge …

stieg und stieg … Und Mensch und Möwe

ward verschlungen und begraben.

Möwenlied

Die Möwen sehen alle aus,

als ob sie Emma hießen.

Sie tragen einen weißen Flaus

und sind mit Schrot zu schießen.

Ich schieße keine Möwe tot,

Ich laß sie lieber leben —

und füttre sie mit Roggenbrot

und rötlichen Zibeben.

O Mensch, du wirst nie nebenbei

der Möwe Flug erreichen.

Wofern du Emma heißest, sei

zufrieden, ihr zu gleichen.

Co van Gorp photos: The Falcon

Poem: James Russell Lowell

The  Falcon

I know a falcon swift and peerless
As e’er was cradled In the pine;
No bird had ever eye so fearless,
Or wing so strong as this of mine.

The winds not better love to pilot
A cloud with molten gold o’er run,
Than him, a little burning islet,
A star above the coming sun.

For with a lark’s heart he doth tower,
By a glorious upward instinct drawn;
No bee nestles deeper in the flower
Than he in the bursting rose of dawn.

No harmless dove, no bird that singeth,
Shudders to see him overhead;
The rush of his fierce swooping bringeth
To innocent hearts no thrill of dread.

Let fraud and wrong and baseness shiver,
For still between them and the sky
The falcon Truth hangs poised forever
And marks them with his vengeful eye.
